““Sir, the report from the surveillance team has come in.”Leonard stood by the window, letting the darkness of the night swallow him whole. The room’s lights were off. “Good morning,” Sophie greeted her in a sweet tone.Avery was suspicious of the smile that suddenly appeared on Sophie’s face as she entered the dining room. She sat down in her chair without answering.Leonard was already there, reading a report on his tablet with a blank expression. Maxim and Olivia sat on the other side, looking perfectly normal. But there was an unusual tension in the air.“What’s going on this morning? Your smile looks as suspicious as a thief in broad daylight,” Avery finally asked.Sophie set her spoon down slowly, the corner of her mouth twitching as she held back her irritation. “Nothing. “How is her condition??” Leonard asked.Anna checked her temperature with a thermometer on Avery’s forehead. “Mrs. Avery’s temperature is still high, sir. The doctor said she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but her body temperature needs to go down.”Leonard glanced at Avery. “What have you done?”“I’ve changed her clothes.” Anna hesitated for a moment. “Usually, when I have a fever, my grandmother uses a warm compress to bring it down. You could try that on Mrs. Avery to lower her body temperature.”Leonard didn’t answer. He simply walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.Anna understood the silent command from her cold and taciturn employer. She fetched a small basin from the bathroom, filled it with warm water, then placed a clean small towel on the edge of the basin. “I’ll wait outside in case you need anything,” she said after setting the basin on the nightstand.She excused herself and stepped out, closing the door gently.Leonard glanced at the basin, then took the

That morning, Avery slowly opened her eyes. Her head still felt heavy, but not as dizzy as the night before. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains that the maids had opened, momentarily blinding her before her eyes adjusted.She felt something pressing against her forehead, something heavy. She lifted her gaze to find a hand holding a dry cloth against her brow. She glanced down at the other hand clasped tightly around hers. Warm. She turned her head slowly to the side.Leonard was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. His head was resting on the edge of the mattress, one hand still clutching Avery’s tightly. The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Leonard turned off the engine, but didn’t get out right away. He just sat behind the wheel, staring at the building in front of him with an expression Avery couldn’t read.Avery waited a moment, then opened the door. “I’ll go first.”“Avery.”She stopped and turned around.Leonard was still staring straight ahead. “In my office later, there’s something you need to see.”“What is it?”“Later.”He got out of the car, not giving Avery a chance to ask any further questions.
