The inquiries divided, over the following weeks, into two clear categories, and understanding the division helped me understand something I hadn't fully examined before about what visibility meant for someone with a capacity like mine. The first category came from people who were interested in the methodology as an institutional tool — councils, coordination bodies, the kinds of organizations that thought about dispute resolution at scale and were looking for better approaches. These inquiries were professional, specific, and essentially unproblematic: they wanted information I could provide, through channels I trusted, in ways that didn't require me to offer more than I'd chosen to offer. The second category came from people who were interested in me. Not in a way that was overtly invasive — most of them were politely professional in their language. But underneath the professional framing, what they wanted was access to the capacity itself, to the practitioner who could do the thing

I gave it to him on a Sunday, which felt like the right day — not a workday, not an evening that needed to get somewhere, but the unhurried open stretch that had always been, for both of us, the day when significant things arrived without urgency.I printed it, which surprised him slightly — I hadn't printed a document for anyone since the early seasons — and handed him the pages and made tea, and sat at the other end of the table while he read.He read slowly, the way he read everything that mattered, and I let the reading be what it was without watching his face for the reactions I wanted or managing the atmosphere toward any particular outcome. I had learned, over the year of being with him, that the right response to someone reading something important was simply to be present and let the reading happen. He turned the last page after about twenty-five minutes. He was quiet for a long moment."Can I ask you something before I say what I think?" he said."Yes.""Did you know, when y

The chapter that gives this arc its title is the quietest one, because the answer turned out to be quiet.I want to be precise about when I understood it, because the precision matters — not the shape of the understanding, which had been building for most of two years, but the specific moment when it became something more than a document heading, when it landed in me as something I actually knew rather than something I was still working toward. It was a Tuesday. An ordinary session, a two-party dispute, the kind I'd handled hundreds of times. I did the work I'd built the capacity to do — reaching when reaching served, setting aside what didn't, holding the full picture with enough care that both parties left with a clearer understanding of themselves and each other than they'd arrived with. And then I walked home, through the familiar city, and was standing at the corner where Eamon and I usually parted ways when our paths coincided, and there was no one there — he was working that da

The journey to Valla's region took two days, which was longer than any distance I'd traveled for the work before, and the length itself felt significant — not a problem to solve, just information, the particular way that physical distance makes the shift from one context to another feel proportional to its actual size.I took the train for the first leg, then a connecting service that ran twice daily and stopped at platforms that had the feel of places the main network had passed over rather than through. The landscape outside the windows shifted across the hours — the familiar patterns of Cascade's surrounding territory giving way to something older-looking, less organised by the same kinds of development, the particular quality of land that had been managed differently for a long time.I'd told Eamon the route the evening before I left, the same way I'd always described significant things to him: specifically, not summarised. He'd listened the whole way through and then said: call m

I spent the first week simply present. Not working yet, not reaching with the gift, not mapping or assessing or offering anything that could be filed as professional output. Valla had understood this when I'd described my approach in the letter, and she'd communicated it to the communities in whatever language suited each of them, so that when I arrived in each one — the seven communities visited over seven days, one each, starting with the smallest and working toward the largest — I arrived simply as a person who was interested in understanding how things worked here. Each community had a different quality, which was not surprising given that the whole point of the network was that each had remained genuinely distinct. But the distinctiveness was more thorough than I'd expected, more woven into the fabric of daily life rather than simply a matter of organisational structure or geographic particularity. The smallest community, thirty-four people, had organised itself entirely around a
