We called every evening, which was new — in Cascade we saw each other more often than we called, and the calls had always been for particular reasons rather than simple daily contact. Distance changed the shape of it, and I found, adjusting to the change, that the daily calls had a different texture than our in-person time: more structured, because neither of us could read the other's presence in a room, more verbal, because the visual and ambient information of shared space wasn't available. This turned out to be its own kind of intimacy."Tell me the actual thing from today," he'd say, sometimes, when I'd started to summarise rather than describe, and I'd go back to the specific — the moment in the third community's central gathering space when something the eldest member said had produced a quality of quiet I recognised as the particular silence of people hearing something named that had been going around their collective mind for years unspoken. Or the quality of light in the seco

It came back to me in the fifth week, during a session with the sixth community, in the way that half-forgotten things sometimes resurface at the precise moment they become useful — not the thing itself, exactly, but the feeling of having once known something that now, in this specific context, became available again. The sixth community was the hardest of the seven. Not unwilling — they'd agreed to the process, they were genuinely present, and what I could read of their collective intent was honest rather than performed. But guarded in the specific way of a community that had been, at some earlier point, shown clearly what happens when something genuinely theirs is misunderstood by outsiders, and had built, over years, a careful architecture of presentation designed to prevent the misunderstanding from recurring.I'd been working with them for two sessions and had the honest sense of meeting a careful surface rather than what was underneath it. Not hostile, not resistant in the adver

I asked to see Valla alone in the seventh week, at the beginning of the week rather than the end. She arrived at the accommodation with the quality of someone who already knew the conversation was going to require her full attention."I need to tell you something Hunter found," I said. "And I need to ask you something about it."She settled into the familiar chair, the composed attention that was simply how she inhabited herself.I told her what Hunter had described: the founding of the network as partly a defensive move, the external pressure from forty years ago, the Compact's historical involvement in that pressure. She was quiet for a long moment."I knew about the defensive element," she said, finally. "The founding generation talked about it sometimes. Not as the primary story — they didn't want the network to be defined by what it was protecting against rather than what it was building toward. So it became background, then it became history, and then it became something only th

The grievance, when it finally surfaced fully, came from an unexpected direction.I'd identified the sixth community as the holder of the historical grievance and had been building toward the conversation that would allow it to be named and addressed. I had a good working theory about which community the grievance was directed against, and I'd planned a session structure designed to create the conditions for the naming to happen from within the sixth community rather than being extracted. What I hadn't anticipated was that the second community would arrive at the same territory from the other side. The seventh session with the second community was running normally — the second community was one of the more accessible groups, their particular social grammar emphasising a kind of explicit verbal transparency that made the gift's work more confirmatory than revelatory — when one of the members, a younger man named Osta, said something that stopped the session. Not dramatic — nothing in t

He stayed for the final week, which hadn't been part of the original plan — he'd arranged his work to allow for it, a flexibility that told me something about how seriously he was taking the question he'd said he wanted to ask when we got home.I didn't manage his presence in the communities the way I might once have managed it. He was simply there, available, and I let whatever happened between him and the people he encountered simply happen, the way I'd been letting things happen between him and the significant people in my life across the past year. My mother. Hunter. Now Valla.I found out afterward what they talked about. He came back from a walk with her on the third day of his final week, in the late afternoon, and sat down across from me at the kitchen table with the quality of someone who has just had a significant conversation and is still absorbing it."She asked me about the blank," he said."And?""She's the first person outside of you who's asked me about it with genuine
