Chapter 1

Luke's POV It was 2am when I sent it.I was not drunk. I want to make that clear. I was fully conscious, fully aware of what I was typing, and I hit send anyway because it was a dating app and the person on the other end was a stranger who would never know my last name.“I want you to pin me down on your desk.”That was the whole message. No additional information. No context. We had been talking for three weeks at that point — this anonymous contact I had matched with who never sent a photo, never told me his name, but somehow always said the right thing at the right time. It felt safe. The kind of safe you only get when the other person has nothing on you.I put my phone face down, pulled the blanket over my head, and went to sleep.I did not think about it again until 8:47am.That was when my alarm went off. I showered, ironed my shirt, checked my emails, and walked into Voss & Associates with my work bag and a coffee I had not yet touched. Standard morning. Completely ordinary.I

The message came at 7:54pm.I was still at my desk. Most of the floor had cleared out by six, but I had stayed back to finish rescheduling the quarterly review and to do the one thing I was actually good at — pretending the morning had not happened. My phone buzzed. I looked down.It was the anonymous contact.I should have put the phone back down. I knew that. I sat there for ten seconds telling myself exactly that. Put it down. Close the app. Go home. Instead I opened the message.“The Meridian Hotel. Room 14. Tomorrow night, 9pm. Come if you want. Leave if you don't.”That was it. No explanation. No buildup. Just an address and a time and a door left open for me to walk through or not.I typed back: “How do I know you're not a problem?”The reply came in under a minute. “You don't. That's the point.”I stared at that for a long time. Then I went home, changed into different clothes three times, told myself I was not going, and showed up at the Meridian Hotel at 8:51pm.The lobby w

I left the hotel at 11:30pm.I did not say much on the way out. Alex didn't either. He opened the door for me, I walked through it, and that was the end of the night. No conversation about what happened. No plan discussed. Just the door closing behind me and the hallway carpet under my feet and the elevator taking me back down to the lobby like nothing unusual had occurred on the second floor.I drove home. I showered. I lay on my back in the dark and stared at the ceiling for forty minutes. Then I went to sleep, because I had work in the morning. He was already at his desk when I arrived at 9am.“Good morning, Mr. Voss.” I set the briefing folder on the edge of his desk. Same as always. Same spot, same folder, same time.“Good morning.” He did not look up from his laptop. “The Harland follow-up needs to go out before noon. I need the Sinclair file pulled and on my desk by ten. And clear my lunch — I have a call.”“Understood.”I turned and walked back out. That was it. No eye contact

Three weeks in and I had developed a routine.Monday through Friday I was his secretary. I managed his schedule, pulled his files, rerouted his calls, and sat twelve feet from his office door without thinking about anything other than the work in front of me. I was good at the job. I had always been good at the job. That part was not complicated.Friday or Saturday nights I was something else entirely. No titles, no desk between us, no sir at the end of my sentences. Just the hotel and the agreement and the version of Alexander Voss that existed only in rooms no one else had access to.The system worked. I had decided it worked and so it did. Then came the Wednesday meeting that broke it.It was a full boardroom — twelve people around the table, two joining remotely, a presentation on the Calloway acquisition that had been in preparation for six weeks. I was in the corner with my laptop, managing documents and taking notes, which was standard for meetings at this level. Alex was at th

Saturday came and he sent the details at 7pm.Different hotel this time. The Aldine, twenty minutes from the Meridian, nicer by about two price brackets. Room 31. Same time — 9pm. I read it, got dressed, and told myself the change of location meant nothing. It probably meant nothing. He was already inside when I arrived. The room was bigger than the ones at the Meridian — proper sitting area, a full desk along one wall, the kind of space that felt less like a meeting point and more like somewhere a person actually stayed. His jacket was on the back of the chair. His laptop was open on the desk.I looked at the laptop.“Working?” I said.“I was earlier.” He closed it. “Not anymore.”I set my jacket down and we moved past the talking portion of the evening quickly, the way we always did. That part had never been the issue. The issue was everything that happened after — the part where the arrangement was supposed to stay clean and transactional and it kept failing to do that because of v

I had been designed to say almost nothing because anonymity was the whole point. I scrolled back through three weeks of conversation. He was careful. Every message was measured. He asked questions that felt natural and followed up on details I gave him in ways that built the impression of genuine interest. And the thing was — it had felt like genuine interest. That was the craft of it. I had felt seen by this account for three weeks and that feeling had been real even if the account was not.I closed the app.I had two options. Confront him and end whatever this was. Or keep the information and watch what he did next.I chose to watch. Not because I had a plan. Because I was not ready to end it and I did not want to admit that yet.So I watched.Tuesday he sent me a direct text at 7pm. "This week is heavy. Thursday if you're available." I read it and did not reply for an hour. Then I replied: "Thursday works." I put my phone down.Wednesday Niles Ashby stopped by my desk at 11am. He

The Aldine again. Room 22 this time.I arrived at nine on the dot — not early, not late. I had made a decision on the drive over that I was going to keep the evening clean. No extra conversation. No letting him ask questions I would answer without thinking. In and out, the way the arrangement was supposed to work from the beginning. That lasted about twenty minutes. He ordered food. That was new. There was a hotel menu on the table and a plate of things I actually liked — which I had mentioned once, in passing, to the anonymous account six weeks ago. He had not referenced it. He just ordered it.I sat down and looked at the food and then at him."You ordered," I said."You haven't eaten. You had back to back from noon to seven.""How do you know what my schedule was today.""I own the calendar system," he said simply.I picked up a fork. "That borders on surveillance.""It's standard access. Every department head has it.""You're checking my lunch gaps.""I noticed." He sat across fro

Niles Ashby made his move on a Tuesday.I was pulling files for the quarterly review when I heard his voice through Alex's office wall — not words, just tone, the kind of tone that meant the conversation had moved past business. I did not stop working. I pulled the files, organised them, and set them on my desk. Then I heard Alex's voice, quieter, controlled, and then silence, and then the office door opened and Ashby walked out.He looked at me directly as he passed my desk. Not the neutral look from last week. Something with information in it."Have a good afternoon, Luke," he said.I said nothing.Alex appeared in his doorway thirty seconds later. "Come in."I went in. He closed the door behind me, which he did not normally do for standard check-ins. He went to his desk but did not sit."Ashby has been speaking to two board members," Alex said. "Caldwell and Farris. He's suggesting there is a conduct issue at the executive level involving a staff member."I kept my face level. "He'

My father called three more times before I picked up on the fourth."One dinner," he said, before I could speak. "That's all. Piers is in the city this week. Edmund has already spoken to him. It would be rude to cancel at this point."I had not agreed to anything yet, which made it interesting that there was already something to cancel. That was Conrad Everett's standard method — arrange things to a point where withdrawal required more energy than attendance."One dinner," I said."Thursday. Carver's, seven pm."I almost said no again when I realized Carver's was the private dining lounge Alex used for off-record meetings. Then I thought about the fact that there was no logical reason Alex would be at Carver's on a random Thursday evening, and I said fine, and I hung up.I did not tell Alex.I went to Carver's on Thursday in a shirt my father would approve of and sat across from Piers Kade at a table in the back section and spent forty minutes discovering that he was not the problem I

He did not text for four days after the Carver's dinner.I noticed. I was not going to pretend I did not notice. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday — nothing personal, nothing outside the office. At work he was the same as always: precise, demanding, completely professional. He passed my desk, gave instructions, reviewed briefings. The job ran perfectly. It felt wrong. Not wrong in the way things going badly felt wrong. Wrong in the way that something missing felt wrong. There was a gap where the texts used to land and I kept not-checking my phone and then checking it and putting it away again.Thursday morning at 9am I put his briefing folder on his desk and turned to leave and he said: "Close the door."I closed the door and turned around. He was at his desk, folder open, pen in hand."Sit down, Luke."I sat."I've been thinking about Carver's," he said."I told you what it was.""I know what you told me." He set the pen down. "I'm not questioning the dinner. I'm telling you it affected me
