He led me through the throne room, the council chamber, the dining hall, the library, and several other places, talking loudly enough for anyone passing by to hear every word. Meanwhile, I took everything in. The number of guards. Their positions and posture. The protocols for visitors. The careful way people spoke to one another. The tension hanging over the palace. But my attention kept returning to Corvus. His voice was shaky. His breathing was shallow and uneven. His heart was beating too slowly. Worry I would never admit aloud spread through my chest. “You look like you are about to pass out,” I interrupted him. “Let’s see the training grounds, and then you can go rest.” His gaze snapped toward me. Then, instinctively, he lowered it. Something bitter twisted inside me. In the state he was in, even if Alaric had been here, he would never have taken the gesture as a challenge.
