MaddieI try to calm the thunderous beat of my heart against my chest as our carriage drives through the front gates. The shimmering spires I saw in the distance are nothing but a hint of the castle’s grandeur. I’d never known it was even possible to construct such an expansive, luxurious building. It’s as wide as it is tall, and each room has its own terrace, each blooming with color from a lovely array of greenery and climbing flowering plants that coat the trellises. I wonder whether my room will have a balcony. I can’t imagine the breathtaking view of the city I’ll be able to see.But surely, I won’t have my own room. Will I? In a marvelous place like this, they wouldn’t give potential breeders the same treatment as they would guests. Of course they wouldn’t. I can’t believe I even had that thought. We’ll probably be crammed into a room on the first floor.I hope the other ladies are nice.Miss Thunderwave and Mr. Price step out of the carriage as soon as it comes to a stop in the

Zachariah“Zach, you alive in there?”Lucas’s mind-link message has me snapping out of whatever temporary trance I’d been in as I watched the red-haired woman disappear down the hallway. She walked with such grace and beauty, and when she looked back to meet my gaze, those sparkling bright blue eyes had me captivated. But now that she’s gone, I turn to another set of eyes, and these are boring through me with enough heat to burn a steak.“You’re supposed to be madly in love with me, remember?” April cuts through Lucas’s mind-link with one of her own, and it’s not gentle. “Why on earth would you stand there gawking at some commoner in rags right in front of me?!”“I wasn’t gawking,” I argue. “And I—just forget it, April.” I don’t get why April even cares since all we’re doing is faking a relationship, so I turn back to the diplomat from Iron Pack that Lucas and I had been speaking to. The man has a bit of a smirk on his face. “Let’s continue our conversation later,” I suggest. “Though

Zachariah“Ah, my boy! What a lineup you have to choose from! You should pick more than one just for fun, eh? Eh?! Ha, ha!”I can ignore my father’s disgusting monologue, which all but disappears while I’m lost in the red-haired woman’s gaze, but he’s jutting his elbow into my ribcage so sharply, I have to grab it to make him stop. And that forces me to break eye contact with her and look at him. “Father, please....”I’m struggling to remember her name. Father had me so distracted as the women were announced, though I think I caught a syllable. Was it Megan? Marie?A murmur rises in the crowd behind us. I can make out the comments of those immediately behind us. The men’s reactions aren’t much better than my father’s. The women ruthlessly judge each other, tearing apart every detail of their gowns, their faces, their stance... as if any one of them would have the guts to stand there while being gawked at in such a way.I know why they’re like that. This is years of my father influenci

KaiWhitecaps shimmer against the blazing sun across the empty horizon. Adjusting the knob on my binoculars, I squint into the glare.“We’re lost again, right?”Niko wears a smirk that I want to slap off his face when I spin to meet his gaze. It fades when he reads my expression, and he turns to the parrot on his shoulder, which he’s hand-feeding a slice of mango.“You know we’re not lost,” I snap. “We’re off course.”“By a million miles,” he says in a smartass tone before holding a hand up in surrender and pretending he’s protecting his parrot. “You wouldn’t hit an innocent bird, would you?”“No,” I tell him. “But I have good aim.”He raises a brow, and he’s clearly fighting to keep another smirk from rising.“I did hope we’d be closer by now, though,” I say, glancing briefly at the view across the ship’s bow. “Sailing around the Wyveron seas has set my plans back by at least two weeks.”“Good thing your brilliant logistics man planned for delays,” he says with a toothy grin. MaddieAnguish washes over me when Prince Zachariah breaks our kiss. It takes a moment for my mind to clear and focus on what’s happening, and at that point, he is already arguing with a woman, the same woman he’d been escorting when I first walked into the castle.His... girlfriend? What have I done? What was I thinking? I’m his breeder, and that’s all, even if we think we feel a bond. The Alpha King will be furious. I’ll be thrown out of the castle for having the nerve to place my hands on the prince, to think for even a second that I’m his mate, that he’s mine. Not only that, but they’ll probably take away any assistance my family was getting because I came here.“It’s none of your business what I do with my mate,” he tells her firmly.“Mate?!” She practically screams the word. “You actually think you’re mated to this... piece of trash?”I wince when he closes the distance between them, sure he’s going to slap her. But he keeps his hands to himself and replies in a low voice, thick
