Semua Bab The Surrogate’s Blade: Bab 251 - Bab 260

The missing page is not gone from the room.It is too present.Page four sits in every pause. In Sarah's knife hand. In Gate's turned shoulder. In the Archivist's mouth while he forgets how to be offended. In Leo's silence."Again," I say.Archivist blinks."Count them again."He does. He uses a gloved finger and touches only the page corners, like paper can bruise."One. Two. Three. Five.""Say what that means.""A page is missing.""No. Say what that means here."His throat works. "Chain of custody broken."Sarah says, "Human words.""Someone removed evidence."I finally look down at Leo.The core is warm against my ribs. Too warm. Sami's thumbprint sits on the tape, brown at the edge from old dust. Leo gives me no click, no half-warning, no bad joke."Leo.""Here.""Did you take it?"Too long.Half a second can be a room."No."

Mara's voice does not follow us whole. The pipes chew it first."...intake...""...sealed...""...not custody..."Then the legal officer, smooth enough to make the drain feel dirtier:"State your current custodian."Sarah stops so fast I hit her shoulder.Nadia nearly hits mine. The fish box shifts in her arms, and the baby gives one wet little breath that makes all of us freeze.Sami puts one finger to his mouth.I want to tell him I know.I do not waste the air.Above us, Mara answers, "Saint Agnes.""Saint Agnes is a charitable structure, not a legal custodian."Gate's voice cuts in, brittle with age and anger. "Saint Agnes accepted liability under archive exemption.""Exemption is suspended for sealed medical authority.""Convenient.""Lawful.""Those are cousins, not twins."The doctor, crouched with the coil bundle under his chin, whispers, "He i

The ambulance leaves Agnes East like it is embarrassed to still run.The engine coughs at the mouth of the alley, catches, coughs again, then drags us into gray rain and morning traffic. Sarah drives with both hands on the wheel and her shoulders set too high. The cracked windshield turns every streetlight into a wet star with bad intentions.Sami sits in front with the paper map open across his knees."Left after bread.""Bread is not a road," Sarah says."It is a smell road.""Use printed names.""Printed names did not survive water."Sarah glances down. The map has a brown smear across three blocks."Fine. Left after bread."In the back, the ambulance is narrower than fear.Nadia sits on the floor with the fish box wedged between her knees and a folded towel under one side so it does not rattle against the metal cabinet. The stripped coil is wrapped high around the outside, dry cloth over waxed cl

The quay is full of people who arrived before our disaster. That feels rude.A woman in a plastic poncho holds a paper cup between both hands and coughs into her sleeve. An old man sits on a crate with an oxygen tank between his shoes. A child in a wheelchair has blue stickers on the spokes and rain in his hair because his mother has given the dry half of the umbrella to the machine clipped behind his seat.Ordinary suffering waits in line.We come in an ambulance with a fish box.Sarah parks behind a supply van and kills the engine before the rattle announces us to the whole river. The ferry sits ahead in white and old blue, paint blistered along the side. SAINT LARK CHARITY MEDICAL is stenciled near the ramp. Under it someone has taped a smaller sign:BED SPACE IS NOT A PROMISE."Honest," the doctor says."Depressing," Sami says."Same family," Sarah says. Two black cars pull in at the far end of the quay.No sirens. No slammed doors.Three dark coats step out with document cases un

The first attack does not come from the Board.Almost funny. It is not funny at all.The ramp alarm dies, and for one full breath the treatment bay listens to the wrong silence. Kovac's head turns toward the passage. Sarah moves half a step in front of the door, hands still visible, every visible part of her lying. Then the ferry takes a hit.Not a wave. Not docking.A hard, ugly boom rolls through the starboard side. The old field unit knocks once behind me. Patients scream somewhere down the passage. A metal tray falls in the next bay and keeps spinning after it lands.Kovac grabs the wall."Not my ramp."The white-haired legal woman appears at the far end of the passage with two dark coats behind her."Stand clear for sealed review."A second boom hits closer. The cot wheels jump and slam back down. One of her men turns to look back.An iron bolt punches through his thigh.
