Semua Bab The Surrogate’s Blade: Bab 271 - Bab 280

The bounty opens in pieces. That is what makes it worse. If one screen lit up, Sarah could break it.If one man announced a price, Kovac could throw him off the deck and call it maritime weather.Instead, Saint Lark starts looking at us differently.A deckhand's radio stutters while he carries soup to the forward cabin. He stops mid-step, listening to static shaped like numbers. An old woman's phone buzzes in her lap even though Kovac swears the patient network is closed. The legal woman's cracked document case, dead since the gold buoy, wakes long enough to flash one word:LIVE.Then it dies again.Kovac sees it."No."The ferry ignores her.So do three cheap tablets in the medication cart. They wake one after another under their cracked plastic covers, each showing a different scrap of the same hunt: LIVE CORE, MOTHER FIELD, UNNAMED INFANT. Kovac sweeps them into a drawer and kicks it

The inspection boat is smaller than the fish box deserves. My first thought when I see it.Not tactical. Not useful.Mother thought, stupid and immediate: there is not enough room for him to be fragile in there. The boat hangs under a gray tarp at Saint Lark's stern, swaying above river water. Rain has pooled in the tarp. Someone has stored rope, cracked float vests, two fuel cans, and a crate of expired motion sickness tablets inside.Sami looks at the tablets."Useful?"Kovac, who followed us despite claiming she was staying forward, says, "If you eat those, you will see God and sue me.""No.""Good."The stern smells of river diesel and wet rope.Above us, Saint Lark's name is painted in flaking blue letters across the hull. Someone has patched the K with duct tape, so in the rain it looks briefly like Saint Lar.Sami notices."Boat lost letter.""Boat has bigger problems," Sa

The inspection boat hits the river crooked. The fish box slides toward my knee. Nadia catches the rope around it with two fingers and a curse she does not finish. I brace the other side with my forearm, not my palm, because touching the box too long teaches my body hope.My son makes a thin, offended sound.Leo says, "Lock holds."Two words. No pronoun.Still the best sound on the boat.Saint Lark's stern hangs above us, gray and ugly in the rain. Board officers crowd the rail with wet sleeves, legal cases, and the faces people wear when paperwork starts losing to gravity.Kovac shouts down, "Go!"Renn shoves between them and yanks the cord. The motor coughs once, dies, coughs again, then catches with a vicious little rattle.Sarah stares.Renn keeps one hand on the throttle. "I have stolen worse."The boat crawls away from Saint Lark. Nothing this old and illegal moves fast unless it is falling apar

Fog does not hide us.It only makes everyone listen harder. The maintenance lifeboat crawls under the storage pier with its engine muffled by wet canvas. The man with the IV-paddle lies flat in the bow, pushing us away from chains by hand. One patient keeps coughing into her sleeve. The woman missing a shoe has found a spare boot three sizes too large and hates it with personal force. The black-market radio hangs from a nail near the lifeboat's little wheel. No one admits who brought it.Renn says it fell in.Sarah says radios do not fall through covered piers and land on nails.Renn says this one had ambition. Then the radio speaks."Open market notice. Live recovery preferred. Mother-source intact. Unnamed infant source intact. Portable live core intact. Mirror residue acceptable. Partial samples paid at reduced rate."The doctor closes his eyes."Reduced rate," he says. "There is a phrase I did not need

The fog thins near a row of abandoned houseboats.Renn knows one of them.Of course she does."There," she says, pointing with the pipe to a green hull under a collapsed awning. "Old cell cache."Sarah doesn't slow."Trap?""Probably.""Helpful.""You asked.""I did not.""Your face did."Sarah looks at me."Decision holder?"The title has stopped sounding ridiculous. That may be worse.I look at the green houseboat. Broken windows. A rope ladder. No visible movement. Too many shadows. Maybe supplies. Maybe enemies. Usually both."We do not dock unless we set terms first."Renn laughs. "Terms? With empty rooms?""Especially with empty rooms."The maintenance lifeboat slows anyway. The engine drops to a low cough. The baby has released my sleeve and gone back to restless sleep. Two mouthfuls sit inside him like treasure with a knife under it.Leo is quiet. Not gone.Quiet.The bounty radio hisses under the towel. We keep it low because ignorance stopped being mercy.Mother-source.Infa
