Lyra’s POV Today’s finally here. I’ve been awake for hours, and as the first sunlight sneaks through the window, I know it’s time to get moving. I’ve already thought through every detail—all the ways things could go smoothly or totally go wrong. There are tons of risks: we could get caught and tortured, the silver might not dissolve properly, we might screw up the switch, or, even worse, someone else could grab it before Kael does. I push the covers aside and get up, even though every ache and pain in my body yells at me to stay in bed. But I can’t do that, especially not today. I wasn’t planning on killing one of them so soon, but hey, I’m not one to waste a perfect chance lying around. I’m not worried about a shower since I took one last night. I grab my clothes off the end of the bed, which I left there a few hours ago. Putting them on, I let out a sigh, knowing this is probably going to be the easiest part of my day.
