The Test

Lyra's POVIt was as if time had stopped; the world around me was frozen in place, and I was the only one still able to move. This wasn't like me—I'm not shy or timid; I was a badass who faced danger and death with a grin. But now, I was walking up to a smiling Lucian, who I knew was ready to wipe the floor with my blood. My feet hit the solid wood of the gymnasium floor. I took in a breath, flexed my back, knowing there was no turning back now. I had to face the blows coming my way, whether I liked it or not.The mission came first.Skye, the gym teacher, stepped between us and announced the rules: "The rules are simple. One minute to make your opponent tap out or knock them out cold. This test measures your defense and offense skills, with whom you'll be partnered for the rest of the semester, and what level of training I think you require. Now let's get the show going. On the count of three, it will begin."These rules seemed simple enough, but there was no way, at least with Lucia

Waking up

Lyra's POVThe light was so bright as if it were blinding me. I struggled to open my eyes, and my head was pounding. I barely got my eyes open to see the overhead lamp shining directly overhead, illuminating my entire body. I was in some room; the walls were stark white, almost glowing, with not a stain to be seen. This must be some hospital wing.I moved my head slightly to the right, and that's when I saw her. A girl about my age was sitting on a chair next to me, her head lolled sideways up against the wall.I had no clue who she was or why she was here. Her jet-black hair was tied up in a messy bun, with strands falling around her sleeping face. She was shorter than me, probably around 5'2ft tall, with a curvy body hidden under a pair of pastel pink sweats. Her skin was pale and covered with freckles, definitely nothing like my olive skin.I tried to move even an inch, but my body wasn't cooperating. Damn, what kind of beating did I take from Lucian? I've never allowed myself to ge

Concern

Lucien’s POV I’d knocked her out cold; I had no choice. There was something unsettling about her, an aura that didn’t sit right with me, and I was determined to push her until she broke. Her refusal to tap out was proof that she wasn't like the humans they had last year from Aurelia, because they usually tapped out within the first ten seconds of us even lunging at them. But Lyra was different; she acted as if she actually enjoyed the fight—her eyes burned with a fiery resolve that was unusual for a human. And he was going to get to the bottom of it. Seated in the dimly lit dining hall with Kael and Cassian, I was picking at my food—a rare behavior for me that hinted at my distracted mind. “Come on, man, pull yourself together. Just because that girl is hot and made you do something during an assessment doesn't make her some kind of wolf killer,” exclaimed Cassian as he cut into his enormous ribeye steak, juices glistening on the meat. “We’ve got bigger problems to worry about, li

Planning

Lyra’s POV I still had my guard up, not completely letting anyone in, but I was genuinely happy that I’d made a friend in Amber, even if she was a werewolf. She was different, and I could use that to my advantage. It was also nice having another girl to talk to. Especially with this saying turning out to be true, ‘The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend’, she hated Lucian and the heirs as much as I did. She had said there were many like her that just wanted peace and were tired of all this fucking war. The smaller packs were struggling, while the three main packs were all-consuming. She gave me more intel in a night than what I would have learned by myself in two weeks. But I was happy to go back to my dorm suite. I always hated to admit it, but I missed Rowan and the familiar comfort he provided that always seemed to soothe me. Rowan had always been my only friend, well, best friend, and on occasion, lover. Usually, people were intimidated by me and ran screaming in the other directi

Planning part 2

Lyra’s POV“Let the games begin,” Rowan whispered into my ear. Excitement rose in my chest; just the thought of beginning the mission was an absolute thrill.Still resting my head in his lap, I looked up at him once again, “How do you think I should do it? Black widow style, where I seduce him? Maybe poison his food or drink with silver powder? Or better yet, do it the old-fashioned way with a silver knife to the heart?”“Calm down, killer,” Rowan laughed, “we have to plan this out very carefully. We can't just rush into this, no matter how much we want to. I honestly think the best way to do it with him is the silver powder.”Sighing, as an assassin, we’re trained in all the death arts. I know of at least 100 ways to kill a man or werewolf. I loved doing it the old-fashioned way of killing them with my bare hands or just a really big and sharp silver dagger. Poison seems just so boring.“You're probably right,” I sighed, “I hate it when you're right. But doing it the other way would

I’m the wrong one.

Lyra’s POV Today’s finally here. I’ve been awake for hours, and as the first sunlight sneaks through the window, I know it’s time to get moving. I’ve already thought through every detail—all the ways things could go smoothly or totally go wrong. There are tons of risks: we could get caught and tortured, the silver might not dissolve properly, we might screw up the switch, or, even worse, someone else could grab it before Kael does. I push the covers aside and get up, even though every ache and pain in my body yells at me to stay in bed. But I can’t do that, especially not today. I wasn’t planning on killing one of them so soon, but hey, I’m not one to waste a perfect chance lying around. I’m not worried about a shower since I took one last night. I grab my clothes off the end of the bed, which I left there a few hours ago. Putting them on, I let out a sigh, knowing this is probably going to be the easiest part of my day. The suite was still quiet, so I knew Rowan hadn't climbed

Oh shit

Rowan’s POV My alarm kept going off, and I knew if I put it on snooze one more time, Lyra was going to come in here and drag me out by my hair. Today was the day, so I needed to pull myself together. Turning the alarm off, I did my best not to cover myself back up with this comfy ass comforter I had on my bed. Whatever luxuries they had here at the academy I'd enjoy it and maybe I could smuggle some of the stuff back with me. Putting that off for another day, I sit up, stretching my arms to relieve the tension in my back. Even though Lyra got her ass handed to her so bad she ended up in the hospital, I still got my ass handed to me by a girl. That jab-kick combination of hers I would have to save in my head to use for another day. My back was to the door, so when I heard it creak, I knew it had to be Lyra coming to drag my ass out of bed. “Lyra, unless you're coming in here to help me with my morning boner, just give me five more minutes, ok!?!” Silence That was weird. Ver

Interrogation

Lyra’s POV I circled him like a hawk circling a mouse in the sky. I must have done one hell of a job pretending to be weak for them to send such amateurs after Rowan and me. But the biggest question at hand is who the fuck sent them? This man-boy wasn't speaking, and I needed to know whether it was one of the heirs, another pack, or maybe the secretive Alpha Leon. Depending on who it was would determine how we went forward. But if this man-boy, I hated calling him that, but I have yet to have him divulge a name, thinks he will live, he's sorely mistaken. Rule number one of being an assassin is to show no mercy. We learned, as kids, that if you show mercy, you get stabbed in the back. The weak get killed, and in our world, there is no time for weakness. That sounds totally laughable since we're both here pretending to basically be pussies. I hated this fucking shit. If it were up to me, I would've ended this all on the first night we were here. But oh no, Commander Rourke wanted us

Aftermath

Lyra’s POV The acrid smell of acid and dissolving flesh burned the inside of my nostrils. I hated that smell; it was enough to make you wretch and dry-heave for days, as no matter how much menthol rub you shove up your nose, it's still there. But this was a necessary evil as it had to be done. We couldn't just leave two very dead werewolves lying around in our suite or run off to Alpha Leon crying for help when it was very obvious humans had killed them. It took us a few hours to do the dirty work as the last of the remains went down the drain. Rowan found some bleach under the sink, thank God. So as he went to clean his room and the kitchen area of the blood, I still sat here in the bathroom, on the edge of the tub, wearing rubber dishwashing gloves, pouring bleach into the tub and down the drain. Fun times. I hated this shit. Back home, we had clean-up crews for the more nefarious actions, but oh n

Gym

Kael’s POV Cassian and I had missed the first two official days of school because we had to run errands for Alpha Leon, as if we were his pups. It was annoying as fuck, but at least we didn't have to worry about being counted absent.Of course, the first day back at school would include fucking torture in Gym class. I didn’t mind the fighting part because, hell, what’s a little roughhousing? But oh no, we had to do fucking cardio, outside in the elements. Even with the freezing temperature outside, my blonde hair was plastered to my neck and the side of my face. Our beloved teacher, now referred to as “The Overlord,” decided it was an amazing idea to run laps around the building to build “stamina.” It was definitely bullShit, she probably enjoyed sitting in her little lawn chair in the snow, counting out laps as if it was her own special torture mechanism. Coming to Alpha Academy, I knew we were gonna learn how to be a leader and shit, but hell, I came here expecting a free rid
