Semua Bab CLAIM ME, DON: Bab 61 - Bab 70

It started over nothing. That was the thing about real arguments. They never started over the actual thing. They started over something small and ordinary that had the real thing sitting underneath it and when the pressure got high enough the small thing cracked open and everything underneath came out all at once.It started over a phone call.Marco had called me directly on Monday afternoon to tell me he was bringing Isadora to the estate on Wednesday for dinner and wanted to make sure I would be there. I said yes without hesitation and thought nothing more of it.Until dinner that evening when Dante mentioned casually that he had moved Wednesday to Thursday because of a meeting.I set my fork down. "You rescheduled Marco's dinner.""A meeting came up," he said."Without asking me," I said."It's one day," he said."That's not the point and you know it," I said. "You made a decision about my schedule without asking me once."He looked at me with the expression of a man who knew he ha

The deliberate distance stopped. Not all at once and not with any announcement. It just stopped, the way things stopped when they had run out of reasons to continue, and what replaced it was something quieter and more honest and considerably more permanent feeling. The library became ours properly. Not mine and his separately, both of us drifting there independently and happening to occupy the same space. Actually ours, both of us choosing it at the same time for the same reason which was that it was where we were most ourselves and most comfortable and most able to just exist without any of the weight that existed everywhere else.He started leaving things there.Small things. A book he thought I would like placed on the side table without comment. A blanket on the armchair on an evening when the house was cold. Once a small dish of the particular biscuits Elena made that I had mentioned once in passing weeks ago and apparently he had remembered and apparently Elena had been informed

It happened on a Thursday afternoon.I was in the garden with the late sun still warm on my back and Biscuit making his slow circuit of the rose beds with the proprietary air of a cat inspecting his own estate. I had been outside for an hour, just walking, enjoying the specific freedom of walking without counting guard positions or calculating exit routes, which was a freedom I was still getting used to and intended to never take for granted.I heard the car at the gate.I didn't think anything of it. Cars came through the gate. That was ordinary. Then Nico appeared on the path ahead of me walking fast and I knew immediately from the quality of his movement that something was wrong."Inside," he said. "Now.""What…""Now Mia," he said.I went.We were almost at the side entrance when the second car came through the gates. Not Dante's car. Not anyone I recognized. A dark vehicle moving too fast for the drive and already through the gates before the guards at the perimeter had fully pro

Nico called him from the garden.I know because I was standing in the entrance hall when the call connected and I heard three seconds of Nico's voice before Dante said something in Italian that made Nico go very still and end the call and look at me with an expression I had never seen on him before. Not fear exactly.Something closer to the specific feeling of watching a person you respected become something considerably more dangerous than their usual version."He's coming back," Nico said."I know," I said."Mia." He looked at me directly. "I need you to understand that what is about to happen in this house is going to look different from anything you've seen before. He is…" He stopped. Restarted. "Just stay with Elena. Whatever you hear."I looked at him. "How bad.""He's not going to hurt you," Nico said. "He's not going to hurt anyone in this house." A pause. "But Rafael Vega is going to wish he had made considerably different choices today."I nodded and went to find Elena. He

We didn't talk about it immediately. We sat on the edge of the bed in the quiet room for a long time and I held his hand and felt his breathing and neither of us said anything and the house settled around us and the city was dark outside and slowly the adrenaline of the evening began to drain away and leave something rawer in its place. He moved first. His hand came up to my face and turned it toward him and he looked at me in the low light and whatever he saw there must have matched whatever I saw in him because neither of us said a word and he kissed me and it was nothing like the careful deliberate versions of before. This was different.Raw and urgent and shaking slightly at the edges with the residue of a day that had asked too much of both of us and the specific relief of being on the other side of it together. His hands were not unhurried tonight. They moved like a man confirming something he had spent the afternoon afraid of losing and I understood that and gave him everything
