Chapter 51

Chapter 51 Elara’s POVLucian cursed under his breath, low and rough, the sound vibrating against my chest.Dana covered her eyes with her palm, cheeks flushing pink. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see anything. I’ll come back later.”“You and Kylan have such terrible timing,” Lucian said, voice still thick with frustration.I was still sitting on his lap, face buried in his chest from pure embarrassment. My heart hammered so loud I was sure Dana could hear it. I tried to stand, but his arm tightened around my waist, holding me right where I was.“What are you doing?” I whispered through gritted teeth. “Let me go.”Dana shifted awkwardly, peeking through her fingers. “Uhhh… I can come back later, you know.”“Go ahead with your message,” Lucian said, calm as ever. “I’m listening.”This was worse than the morning Kylan knocked on my door. This was torture. Apparently I wasn’t the only one. Dana looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole. She cleared her throat and started talking abou

Chapter 52

Elara's POV “You’re a married man, Uther. This is wrong. We can’t continue doing this to your wife and son.”The woman’s voice echoed softly in the hidden room, full of pain and resolve. I saw myself in her. I probably looked exactly like this the night Alpha Darius offered me a place at his side, as his secret, his mistress. Was I going to end up like this? Hiding in the shadows while another woman took the throne and title, sitting beside Lucian as wife?Uther stepped closer, desperation clear in every line of his face. “You know I do not love her. I was forced to marry her and I did so out of duty. You know the whole truth. You are the one I have always loved, and I know you love me too.”“Yes, you are right I love you too, Uther. With all of my heart. That was why I agreed to this arrangement in the first place.” she whispered, voice breaking. “But I can not continue to be your mistress, hiding in the shadows away from your wife. It’s tearing me apart.”She turned away from him,

Chapter 53

Lucian’s POV I sat in my study, elbows on the desk, eyes scanning the same line of Dana’s report for the third time. Patrol numbers. Border sightings. Nothing unusual. Yet my mind refused to focus. The events of the past few days kept circling — Elara’s confession about Darius, the kiss in the training room, the way she had looked at me when she said she was falling for me. A voice cut through the silence. “Lucian… Lucian…” I lifted my head, scanning the room. Empty. No one at the door. No servant. Just the quiet crackle of the fire. I shook my head. I was going mad. The lack of sleep was finally catching up to me. I rubbed my eyes and went back to the report. The voice came again, stronger this time, pulling at something deep in my chest. “Lucian…” It wasn’t in my head. It felt real. Urgent. I stood up before I could question it. My feet moved on their own, carrying me out of the study and down the corridor. The voice led me straight to the library. Elara wasn’t there. I ke

Chapter 54

Darius’s POVI sat at the head of the long oak table, fingers drumming on the wood while two of my betas argued over border patrols. Their voices blurred into background noise. My mind was elsewhere — on the white witch my spies kept whispering about, on the power Lucian was hiding in his palace. The door to the side chamber creaked open. Anya, one of Liora’s personal maids, slipped in, looking nervous. She headed straight for my Luna, who was lounging on a chaise near the window.I pretended to keep reading the report in front of me.“Luna,” Anya whispered, voice shaking. “You need to hear this. At the human restaurant last night — the girl was there. Elara. She healed a choking child with some kind of glowing light. Right in front of everyone. The whole place saw it.”Liora’s head snapped up. “What are you talking about? You must have mistaken her for someone else. We’re discussing the menu for the ball, remember?”Anya lowered her voice even more. “It was her. I swear it. She look

Chapter 55

Lucian’s POVI stormed into the royal infirmary with the pendant clutched in my fist, Kylan right behind me.Gaius looked up from a stack of scrolls, eyes widening when he saw my face. “My king?”I slammed the pendant down on the table in front of him. The crystal caught the lantern light and flickered once before going dull. “Elara found this in the hidden room behind the old library shelf. She said she had a vision. A woman who looked like her with white hair arguing with a man who looked like me. The man’s name was Uther. She called him her lover. Then she hid this pendant and opened a portal. Before she left, she looked straight at Elara and smiled, like she could see her.”Gaius picked up the pendant with trembling fingers. “Uther…”I leaned forward, voice tight. “Uther is my great-grandfather. Did he have an affair or something? Tell me everything you know. Now.”Kylan dropped into the chair beside me, eyes sharp. “This better be good, old man. The king’s not in the mood for half

Chapter 56

Elara’s POVI sat on the edge of my bed, knees pulled to my chest, staring at the wall like it held all the answers I needed. The vision from the secret room kept replaying in my head. The woman who looked like me, white hair glowing, voice breaking as she told Uther she couldn’t be his hidden mistress anymore. The pain in her eyes. The way she walked through that portal and left him behind. Was that going to be me? Was I going to end up like her — a mistress who hides behind the shadows, loved in secret but never claimed in the light? No. Lucian had taken me out. He had held my hand in the human restaurant, kissed my fingers in the car, looked at me like I was the only thing that mattered. But that was in the human world. Not here. Not in the Lycan kingdom where everyone knew him as the king and me as… what? His rescued stray? His possession? His secret? The thought made my stomach twist. He had never said he loved me. Not once. I had poured out my feelings in that training room, ki

Chapter 57

Elara’s POVI was nervous, did I really want to hear what he had to say? What if he says he can’t really be with me? He had after all called me wolfless before. I had to find out, the earlier, the better. Something in me knew it was already too late though. I had already fallen hopelessly in love with him. I could barely control myself whenever he's around. It’s almost as if…as if the mate bond was never broken. If he offered me a place by his side as his mistress, will I have the will power to refuse?I had to. If the white haired witch was my ancestor, I owed it to her. Maybe she was trying to warn me. I won’t let history repeat itself.I kept my head down and walked toward Lucian’s study. If he wasn’t there, I would find him. I had to.As I neared the heavy oak door, voices drifted out. Lucian’s low and firm. Kylan’s lighter. Dana’s steady. The door was slightly ajar. I stopped just out of sight, heart pounding, and listened.“…not going to the ball,” Lucian said. “I won’t permi

Chapter 58

Lucian’s POVI stood at the window of my study, staring out at the arriving carriages and horses. The Annual Royal Ball was only hours away, and the palace was already buzzing with guests. I should have been focused on the politics, the alliances, the threats. Instead my mind kept drifting back to Elara.I wondered whether I should have spoken to her myself. Told her why she wasn’t allowed to come out during the banquet. Instead I had asked Dana to handle it. To lock her in her chambers and make sure she stayed there until the ball was over. I had half expected her to yell, to throw a tantrum, to demand an explanation. But the reports from the maids said she had been quiet. No protest. No anger. Just silence. That silence worried me more than any outburst would have.I rubbed my temple, trying to push the thought away. The arrival of the guests gave me something to think about, pushing Elara to the back of my mind for now. I had to focus. The Lycan Kingdom was hosting the most powerfu

Chapter 59

Lucian’s POVThe grand hall was alive with the Annual Royal Ball in full swing. Crystal chandeliers cast warm light over the crowd, and the music from the string quartet floated above the murmur of conversation and laughter. Alphas from every major pack filled the room, their Luna’s on their arms, jewels flashing, gowns swirling. I moved through it all, shaking hands, offering smiles, playing the perfect host.“Alpha Vesper,” I said, clasping his forearm. “Your pack’s borders look strong this season. The trade routes are running smoothly.”He laughed and clapped my shoulder. “Thanks to your patrols, Lucian. We owe you. The rogues have stayed clear of our lands for months.”I nodded, keeping my expression warm. “Glad to hear it. Let’s keep it that way.”I moved on, exchanging the same polite words with Alpha Riven of the Stormridge Pack and a dozen others. Every conversation felt like walking a blade. They all wanted the same thing. The rumours had spread. The glowing girl. The power i

Chapter 60

Elara’s POVI sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the wall after Dana left. She had come earlier with the news. “The king says you are not to attend the ball, my lady. You’re to remain in your chambers until it’s over. It’s to keep you safe.”Safe. That's the only excuse he could come up with?He hadn't even had the courage to tell me himself. Coward! I had not fought. I had not protested. I had simply nodded, thanked her, and closed the door behind her. But inside, the words burned. Safe from what? From Darius? From Liora? They weren't even going to come to the ball after that unsolicited visit. I knew how proud Alpha Darius was. His ego was bigger than the entire realm combined. Was he keeping me safe from the eyes of the entire realm? Or from the truth that Lucian still saw me as something to hide? Whatever the answer to these questions were, I did not care any longer. I wasn’t going to hide in the dark anymore.I stood up and paced the room. The emerald dress from our date hun
