Chapter 42 Lucian’s POVGaius had nothing.Again.It had been four days since Darius's visit. The royal physician had stood in my study an hour earlier, wringing his hands and repeating the same useless words: “She carries powerful witch blood mixed with strong wolf heritage, my king. The seal on her magic is ancient and deliberate, made by a white witch but I still have no name, no bloodline, no clear origin.” He left with another stack of scrolls under his arm, promising to keep searching.I couldn’t sit still after that.I left the study and walked the long corridors until I reached the royal library. I had never bothered with the old archive section before. It was a forgotten corner of the palace, dusty, dim, filled with volumes no one had touched in decades. Tonight the dust didn’t bother me. The smell of old leather and aged paper actually felt right. Anything was better than waiting.I pushed open the heavy oak door and stepped inside. Lantern light flickered across rows of

Elara’s POVI still couldn’t believe I had kissed him first. The moment my lips met his, something inside me broke open. Yes, I was falling in love with him. Not the careful, hesitant kind of love I had imagined in my old life — this was raw, terrifying, and completely unstoppable. I had initiated it. I had pulled him down and kissed him like I was drowning and he was air.The kiss lasted for what felt like forever and not nearly long enough. It started hungry and turned deeper, slower, like we were both trying to memorize every second. When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing hard, chests rising and falling against each other. We lay tangled in each other’s arms on the training room floor, the mats cool beneath us. His hand rested on my waist, thumb tracing lazy circles over the bare skin where my top had ridden up. My head was on his chest, listening to the rapid thud of his heart.“You know you’ve been here for months now,” Lucian said quietly, voice still rough from the

Lucian’s POV I could barely sleep the entire night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Elara’s face — flushed, lips swollen from our kiss, eyes wide with surprise and want. Then the memory of her words would crash in. She had been mated to Darius first. He had rejected her. Liora had tried to have her killed. The anger in my chest refused to settle, twisting and burning until the first light of dawn crept through the windows. I woke up feeling tired, the kind of bone-deep exhaustion that no amount of rest could fix. I hadn’t had a good night’s sleep since the day Darius walked into my palace unannounced. I dragged myself out of bed, washed up quickly with cold water to shock my system awake, and headed straight to my study. The moment I sat down, one of the head servants knocked and entered, bowing low. “Good morning, my lord. Everything is set for your date with Lady Elara this afternoon. We’ve also delivered the custom-made dress you requested for her.” I blinked. “Date?” “Yes,

Elara’s POV We spoke in soft voices, sipping wine and enjoying the evening. The restaurant hummed with quiet conversation around us, but it felt like we were the only two people in the room. Lucian’s hand rested on the table, fingers occasionally brushing mine. Every time they did, warmth spread through me. We talked about silly things — the way the lanterns outside looked like floating stars, how the human waiters moved so gracefully, how the food tasted like magic even though it was just steak and sauce. For a few precious minutes, the palace, the curse, Darius, Liora — all of it felt far away. Then Lucian’s expression shifted. His eyes unfocused for a second, the way they did when someone mind-linked him. They barely did that in the palace since everyone was always in the same place. He squeezed my hand gently. “I need to take care of something, it won't take time I promise. I’ll be right back.” I nodded, understanding. Talking to them here would make him look crazy to the h

Elara’s POVI woke up well rested, even after yesterday’s events. The bed felt more comfortable than usual, the sheets warm from the morning sun. Lucian’s scent still lingered on the pillow beside me, faint but comforting. The candy incident at the restaurant had been terrifying, but the rest of the evening, the quiet conversation, the way he had held my hand the entire drive back — had made everything else fade. I stretched, smiling to myself. For the first time in weeks, I felt light.I waited for breakfast, but none came. The usual knock from the maids never sounded. No tray, no cheerful greeting. What was keeping them?Curiosity won. I slipped on a simple robe and padded barefoot down the corridor toward the dining hall. The smell hit me first — warm butter, fresh herbs, eggs scrambled with a hint of cheese and chives, thick slices of toasted bread, and the rich aroma of coffee. My stomach growled in approval.I pushed open the heavy double doors.Lucian was already there, seated
