Margaret's pov. Newville's airport lounge was so cramped that one could barely move five feet without bumping into someone. My boarding pass was crumpled in my fist Gate 17, departing in twenty-three minutes. I kept glancing at the digital board even though the numbers hadn't changed in the last ten minutes. I hadn't been back to Lintertown in six years. Not since the day I walked out of the family house with my law degree from Newville college of Law. I convinced myself that I was too busy with case files and depositions so I couldn't make to go him but the truth was simpler: I was afraid that if I went back, the old version of me that who flinched at raised voices and learned to disappear into wallpaper would crawl right back under my skin. The invitation had arrived three days ago. A cream envelope with gold foil script marked "Margaret's invite" which I had found on my doorstep when I got back from work on Monday. Laura,my stepsister, was getting married to some billionaire

Recognized

Margaret's pov The living room was already full when I reached the bottom. Everyone had gathered near the wide double doors that opened onto the front porch, like actors waiting for their cue. Vivian stood at the center, one hand on Laura's arm, the other gesturing gracefully toward the driveway. Dad hovered a step behind, smiling. And then there was him,Alexander Martinez stepped through the doorway, the black suit hugged his frame in a way that looked effortless and expensive. His dark hair was swept back, a single strand falling across his forehead as he tilted his head to greet Vivian with a polite nod. "Mrs. Peters," he said, taking Vivian's offered hand and brushing a kiss across her knuckles. "Thank you for having me." Vivian practically preened. "Alexander, darling, we've been dying to have you here properly.I can't wait to finally call you my son in-law" Laura stepped forward next, slipping her arm through his with practiced ease. "You're late," she teased, but he

Margaret's pov "Alexander," I squeaked, keeping my voice as steady as I could, "Please leave,Laura won't be happy if she finds you here." He didn't move, instead, he put one shoulder against the doorframe and watched me with that unreadable calm that made partners at the firm nervous. "I'm not here to do anything inappropriate, Margaret. I just want to talk." "Talk?" I let out a short laugh. "You followed me upstairs without my permission and now you're inside my bedroom while my entire family is downstairs. If that's your version of talking, we have very different definitions." A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Fair point." He paused, eyes tracing my face slowly. "But I can’t go on with this wedding without talking to you. I know you might still be mad about what happened in high school so I want to apologize for whatever pain I must have caused you back then” I swallowed, heat creeping up my neck. "It’s fine Alexander. That doesn’t matter anymore.” "Well

Drunken Escapades

Margaret's pov The letter trembled in my hands.Alexander had done this without asking or even a simple warning. He is practically trying yanked me back into the very cage I had spent six years escaping. My chest tightened until breathing hurt. I folded the paper, shoved it into the envelope and marched downstairs before I could talk myself out of it. The house was already buzzing with pre-wedding energy with staff carrying flower arrangements, caterers setting up tables on the lawn and the faint sound of string quartet practicing somewhere outside. I spotted him on the back patio, standing with a coffee cup in his hand. "Alexander," I said with a sharp voice which drew the attention of a few staff members to us but I didn't care. "We need to talk." "Margaret," he said smoothly, setting the coffee down. "Good morning." "Don't 'good morning' me." I kept my voice hushed, stepping closer so only he could hear. "You transferred me to Lintertown? Did Laura tell you to do this?"

Narcissist

Margaret’s POVLaura stood in the doorway in her wedding gown, veil slightly askew and makeup still flawless except for the rage twisting her pretty features. Behind her, I caught a glimpse of Vivian’s shocked face, one hand pressed to her mouth.Shock sizzling through my veins,I quickly shoved Alexander to the side, found the nearest sheet and wrapped it around my body. Alexander on the other hand, seemed rather unbothered,he simply buckled his belt and walked towards Laura slowly like he was not just caught half naked in another woman's room on his wedding night. His movements were still unsteady from whatever he’d been drinking but I couldn't say the same for myself,I was anything other than tipsy at that moment.“Laura,” he called, stretching out his arms to pull her into a hug.“This isn’t—”“Don’t you dare,” Laura snapped, stepping fully into the room. Her eyes were wild, darting between us. “ I came up here looking for you because you disappeared right after our first dance,

Alexander’s Tricks

Margaret’s POVThe muffled noise that was incessantly erupting from downstairs didn't help the severe pounding in my head.I had just fallen asleep like two hours ago after spending the night replaying last night's events.A knock came at the door and I reluctantly got up from the bed to open up. It was Felicia, the house help.“Breakfast is ready. Madam asked that you be called downstairs”.“Alright thanks” I replied before shutting the door.I wanted to decline but I couldn't. It was more of a family tradition that breakfast and dinner are eaten together. And knowing Vivian, for her to request that I come down myself,it was wisest not to disobey her.I quickly washed my face and got dressed in a black cashmere gown, the only color of clothing I actually had. When I got to the dining room downstairs, everyone was already seated. The long mahogany table on the patio had been beautifully set with fresh flowers, silverware that probably cost more than my rent, and platters of eggs Benedict,

Games And Motives

Margaret’s POVTime stopped for a second as I tried to wrap my head around what Alexander just said. “What the hell did you just say?” I demanded, my voice shaking with built up fury. He didn’t flinch. Instead, he smirked, then leaned down slightly, his breath brushing over my face.” I said that I bought your apartment. And I’m going to turn in into a minimart if you dare me Margaret”“You must be joking” In disbelief,I quickly looked up the ownership of my apartment block and low and behold,it read Alexander Martinez.“Are you sick or something? Why the hell are you trying to uproot my life?!!” I yelled, finally stepping out of the car in anger.“Don’t do that Margaret, you and I know we have unfinished business since high school so the moment I saw your name on Laura's invite list,I had to put plans in place. I couldn’t let you disappear back to Newville again. Not while I can help it.”My blood was literally boiling at this point. “You’re insane if you think of me around like I’m

Alexander's Games

Alexander’s POVI was halfway up the front steps when Laura stepped directly into my path, blocking the doorway just as I was about to enter the house. Apparently, she’d been ok the doorway listening in to I and Margaret's altercation.“I see your whore finally left,” she spat, her voice so loud that even the domestic staff that passed by could hear her.I paused, placed one hand on the doorframe, and looked down at her calmly although my inside was burning with irritation from her constant nagging, but I kept my expression neutral. Showing emotion to Laura was like feeding a stray cat and it would only encourage more begging and scratching.“Move, Laura,” I said quietly, stepping around her.Like expected, she didn’t move. She grabbed my arm firmly, her nails digging in through my shirt. “Don’t you dare walk away from me, Alexander. So after fucking her yesterday, you're trying to stop her from leaving so you can have another go huh?”I exhaled slowly, glancing toward the house to make

Power Is Power

Margaret’s POVAfter setting down my luggage stuff in Cielin’s one room condo that could barely fit her let alone the both of us,I promptly went into the shower and let the hot water pound against my skin like it could wash away the shame and pain that had followed me back to Lintertown. What was supposed to be just three days of being invisible had turned into a series of yet another family drama between Laura and I.Finally stepping out of the shower after what seemed like ages, the mirror was already fogged over so I wiped a circle clear and stared at my reflection which had turned pale and now became a shadow of itself. I half hazardly damped my hair and body, put on one of my oversized hoodies, then slumped into Cielin's couch. She had left for her afternoon shift at the hospital like she said over the phone when I called her to let her know that I’d arrived. I wished I didn't have to inconvenience her but I’ve got no choice. I just have to stay here till I get another apartment. My

Wednesday Becomes The Deciding Day

Margaret’s POV“Cielin…” I muttered, rushing forward as I pulled her into my embrace. She was shaking so I held her harder, rubbing her back like a kid who was being comforted by her mother after losing a toy. “I’m so sorry. But why would they fire you just like that? You’ve been working for them for close to ten years and they just let you go like that?Nothing is going well in this town anymore.”She pulled back slightly, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “Its that bastard Margaret. I know this is Alexander's doing. He’s coming after me so he can get to you.” Her voice rose, anger replacing the shock she had walked into the room with. “I think we need to go with your suggestion yesterday and just call the police, Mags. This is harassment, stalking and outright abuse of power. He’s destroying our lives!”I swallowed hard, leading her to the couch where we sat down together, my arm still around her shoulders. “ Listen Cielin,I might have suggested we go to the police but honestl
