WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS

DRE’S P.O.VWhen my bladder is full and I’m busting to pee, that’s when I force myself awake. My eyes are glum and swollen from last night’s tears and from the lack of sleep I’ve had. I tried to sleep, but sleep barely came. Each passing day, and every hour after Luke left, I’d wake up. I’ll look to my side to see if he came back, if he crawled back into my bed because the floor was hurting his back. I couldn’t stop checking his sleeping bag too, hoping I’d find him awake, staring right back at me. But he wasn’t there, he didn't come. Each time I closed my eyes after that, I’d see him on his knees, with his forehead pressed against my bed. His shoulders would shake with those ragged, desperate breaths from that night. I couldn't bare it, so I stayed awake.Luke wouldn’t come back. Why would he come here anyway? I’m the one who pushed him away. I pushed him, and now the one thing I’ve always hoped and prayed wouldn’t happen, finally has.I’ve lost Luke.My one and only best friend. My

DATE

DRE’S P.O.VIn school, I look out for Luke.Every day since he left my room, I’ve looked out for him. For the first week, he didn’t come to school, he came the week after that, and every other day since then, but I barely saw much of him at all. Just the back of his head in the hallways, which I noticed because of the familiar clothes he had on. A few other times, he’d walk by, and I’d pick up his scent and follow it, just to see if he was doing okay— he never was. It's lunch and just like every day, I don't go; I’m not in the mood to eat, and even if I am, I'd have to go alone.I haven’t seen much of Ruth, either, and it has me wondering if Luke said anything to her? She also didn’t text or call me after Luke took her hand and led her out of the cafeteria. And when she did, it’ll be about anything else, but never about Luke. She dropped the chase after him entirely, she never brought up his name, or talk about him, or ask me to help set them up. Luke must’ve said something to her.I

SILVER HATCHBACK

DRE’S P.O.VRuth’s new car is a sleek little silver hatchback parked in the student lot, shiny enough under the afternoon sun.“Ruth! No way,” I say, genuinely smiling for the first time all day. I walk around it once, trailing my fingers over the hood. “When did this happen?”“Last weekend. My mum finally caved after I passed my test on the first try.” She grins, dangling the keys like a trophy. I’m so happy for her. For the past several days, Luke hasn’t been giving us rides. Not because he didn’t want to, but we had all gone radio silent on each other. It’ll be weird. So since then, Silver’s been driving me when she can, and mum too on the days Silver couldn’t. But I’m happy for Ruth—I really am.“That’s amazing. Seriously. You deserve this.”She unlocks the doors with a beep. “Hop in. And you can explain why you’re suddenly not feeling Cameron anymore.”“Ruth,” I groan, sliding into the passenger seat. The car smells of new leather and her vanilla air freshener. “I wasn’t feelin

MY FAULT

DRE’S P.O.VCameron is just minutes away, and Ruth is helping me touch up my makeup by my dresser.“Thanks for helping me,” I start. She smiles, making her pretty blue eyes sparkle.“You’ll be glad I made you go,” she says, leaning in to plant a kiss on my cheek.*I really doubt that.*But I don’t say it out loud.Maybe Ruth can read my thoughts, or more realistically, my face said it all, but she notices.“Dre...you look like you’re going to cry,” she whispers, holding my cheeks.“No, I’m fine,” I choke. “I just need to change out my contacts.”I reach out for my contact lenses on the dresser, struggling to take them out. I can’t, so I just end up poking my eyes and tears well up, slipping shamefuly down my cheeks.“Oh my God, Dre...you have to be careful,” she warns.I dab the tears away, careful not to smear the makeup.“Sorry...I’ll just leave these in.”Ruth nods, resting her hands on my shoulders.“Okay, you’re okay though, right?” “I am,” I say firmly, trying to convince myse

HAVEN'T MOVED ON

DRE'S P.O.VThe date has actually been… nice. Shockingly nice.We started at this little Italian place downtown, with candlelight and very good pasta, even better wine, which I declined. I don’t trust myself with alcohol, and there’s just one person I trust to take care of me when I do drink.I told Cameron straight up before the appetisers even arrived: “I’m not looking for anything serious. Just a fun, no strings attached.”He’d grinned, leaned back in his chair, and said, “That’s exactly what he was looking for.”Cameron’s a really nice guy, and Ruth was right: he is quite fond of me.“You know, at the party, I thought you were one of the coolest people there. I really had fun talking to you."I barely even remember the conversation we had."Then, after it was over, you left. I was so upset couldn’t get your phone number,” he said as soon as the food came.“Really?”“Hell yeah,” he chuckles. “I got Ruth’s number from Diego, then yours from Ruth.”I smile lightly. “So how do you kno

LOVE HIM

DRE’S P.O.V After hugging me goodnight and taking me to the front door, Cameron leaves. I ramble through my purse for the house keys, unlock the door and let myself in. The date was fun, and I didn’t entirely regret going like I thought I would. I head to the stairs when I hear someone speak. I freeze instantly at the spot; every strand of hair on my body stands. Someone broke in. An intruder is actually here in my house. Mum is out, Luke still isn’t speaking to me, so who the fuck is in here? My heart races in my chest, and I don’t know when I start crying all over again while I move closer to the coat hanger by the door. There are a bunch of things there I can just grab and use for protection against whoever it is. I draw in a shaky breath and carefully pull out an umbrella. Fortunately, the intruder didn’t notice when I came in; it’ll be easy for me to sneak up on them, hit them from behind with my umbrella as many times as I can, if I’m lucky, knock whoever out unconscious.

PICK UP

LUKE’S P.O.V (One week ago) *I know you’re getting my calls; pick up, damn boy.* My father’s been in and out of town for a while. He never stays here for too long; he always prefers his life in the city, in the States, and mostly halfway across the world. It’s always been fine for me so far he’s anywhere where I’m not. But he’s here, and so it’s not fine. I already predicted the first thing he’d do once he couldn’t reach me. That’s why I made sure I was out of town before Devante and his men came to find me. I couldn’t be at the house, at school, or the local basketball court I used to hang out with Ian, Dre’s and Halle’s too. So the second practice is over, I head straight to my car to pick up my bag, which is packed with everything I need. Cash, two clean shirt a wristwatch, a bar of soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, my new phone, my old phone and my charger. It’s all I need at the motel before my father grew tired of looking for me and called off the search. If he ever does.

REAPER

LUKE’S P.O.V The phone feels like a live grenade in my palm. My thumb hovers over the green button for half a second before I swipe it, pressing the device hard against my ear, not saying anything, just listening till he is ready to speak. A low chuckle rolls through the line, the kind that always scared me and made my stomach drop when I was a kid. “There he is. My disappearing son. Took you long enough, boy.” I stand up from the sagging bed, pacing the tiny strip of carpet between the dresser and the bathroom door. The room suddenly feels smaller. “What do you want? I told you I’m not interested.” “You think this is about forcing you into the game again?” His tone is sharper now, the fake amusement fading fast. “I don’t have time for your bullshit anymore; matter of fact, my time’s already up.” I stand still, heart beating quicker than normal. “Your time is up?” “Yes.” I hear the pain in his voice. “The feds finally caught up, Lucas. They raided three of my spots l

NEVER AGAIN

DRE’S P.O.V (Present day) The sound of the door closing jolts me awake. I sit up so fast I almost fall out of the chair. I look to the sofa opposite me, and Luke’s gone— that makes me fall out of the chair, straight onto my ass. I rub my bruised elbow, scrambling to my feet. *He just left.* He can’t be that far ahead. I need to go after him right now. I’m still in last night’s date clothes—wrinkled top, jeans, the faint smell of churros and Cameron’s cologne clinging to me. My hair is a mess, my eyes are probably swollen from crying, but I don’t care. I grab my keys and bolt out the front door. The sky is still dark, the unrisen sun still hiding in the sky. Streetlights cast long, lonely shadows on the sidewalk, and the morning air bites cold against my skin, raising goosebumps, but I ignore it. Once I’m out the door, I look to the left—nothing. Just the empty pavement and a distant car humming somewhere blocks away. To the right—still no sign of Luke. “Damn it, Lu

LED ON

LUKE’S P.O.V Dre moves closer to me, running her thumb gently under the skin of my eyes. “Talk to me,” she begs, and even as much as I love hearing her beg, I don’t want to hear any of it right now. My jaw clenches. I take her hand away from my face, then hold it gently . I remember every word she said to me the day she pushed us away. “Dre, I don’t feel like talking about it,” I say gently, fixing my gaze on the wired fence. I don’t know if I can look at her for so long without doing something unpredictable. For the weeks we didn’t speak, I struggled to push that entire scene to the back of my head. I thought if I didn’t think about it, it’d only be a matter of time before I’d forget about it, and when I did, it’d be like it didn’t happen. But Dre’s here, and so are her words and so is the painful memory. *We’ve let this play out too long* Like it’s all just a game, it definitely feels that way to her. Then she went on, saying something else about dignity. What she doesn’t k
