Chapter 61

We returned from Cape Town on a Sunday, landing in a city that felt, after five days of Atlantic wind and overwhelming Southern Hemisphere sky, slightly smaller and considerably grayer than we'd left it, though this impression faded almost immediately upon walking through our front door and being absorbed back into the particular, familiar warmth of a home that smelled like Killian's herb pots on the kitchen windowsill and Kade's coffee and the specific, unnameable combination of things that meant simply and completely us.Eli, who had conducted himself across fourteen hours of international travel with a stoicism that had surprised everyone including himself, chose the precise moment of homecoming to become definitively done with the entire enterprise, dissolving into the particular, comprehensive exhaustion of a two-year-old who had been patient for approximately forty-eight hours longer than his developmental stage technically required. He was asleep before we'd fully unpacked, tra

Chapter 62

The case arrived in September with the particular, quiet gravity of something that would require considerably more than professional competence to navigate well.A whistleblower case. A mid-level compliance officer at a financial services firm who had flagged internal irregularities through every appropriate internal channel for fourteen months before concluding, after each was systematically ignored or redirected, that the appropriate external channel was the regulatory authority. She'd filed her report eight weeks ago. She'd been terminated four weeks ago. And she was now sitting in my office looking simultaneously exhausted and resolute in the particular way of people who have made a decision they know is correct and are beginning to fully understand what correct decisions sometimes cost. Her name was Diana Chen. She was thirty-eight, methodical, precise in her language in a way that suggested years of training herself to be so, and she had brought, without being asked, a four-inch

Eli started nursery in September, which was, objectively, a completely ordinary developmental milestone and which all three of us handled with varying degrees of composure that could charitably be described as adequate.Kade prepared, in the weeks beforehand, with the same methodical thoroughness he brought to any significant transition, researching the nursery's curriculum and staff-to-child ratios and drop-off procedures with the focused, practical energy of a man who processed emotion primarily through preparation. He produced a laminated information card for Eli's bag, cross-referenced the nursery's emergency contact requirements, and had a twenty-minute conversation with the key worker about Eli's specific communication patterns, dietary preferences, and the particular, focused way he approached new environments, which was to say cautiously, from a distance, and then with sudden, total commitment once he'd decided the thing was worth engaging with."You've written a dossier," Kil

The Diana Chen tribunal began on a Tuesday in November with the particular, charged atmosphere of a proceeding that everyone in the room understood was about something larger than the specific facts before them. The firm had hired exactly the kind of legal team I'd anticipated, three senior partners and a support staff that outnumbered ours two to one, their table arranged with the practiced, deliberate authority of people accustomed to making the physical weight of their resources felt in a room before the first word was spoken.Diana sat beside me with the same quiet, resolute composure she'd maintained throughout the fourteen months of her original whistleblowing process, through the termination, through the eight weeks of preparation, through the preliminary hearings where the firm's lawyers had made their first, careful attempts to reframe the narrative from corporate misconduct to disgruntled employee, attempts she had weathered without visible disturbance. She reminded me, in w

Eloise's health scare arrived in December, announced with the same composed, deliberate understatement she brought to everything she'd decided didn't require anyone else's immediate alarm. She called me on a Wednesday afternoon, her voice entirely level, to mention that she'd had a minor cardiac event the previous evening, had been briefly hospitalized, had been discharged that morning with a new medication protocol and a follow-up appointment scheduled for the following week, and was perfectly fine, and she was only mentioning it now because she suspected I would be considerably more irritated to hear about it later than to hear about it immediately."You had a cardiac event yesterday evening," I said carefully, "and you're calling me now.""I didn't want to alarm anyone unnecessarily," she said. "The doctors were quite clear that it was minor and that with the medication adjustment the prognosis is entirely manageable.""Eloise.""I'm fine, Mia.""You're going to tell both twins tod

Chapter 66

New Year arrived the way it always did in our household, slightly chaotically and considerably later than anyone had planned, both children refusing the concept of an early bedtime on the grounds that the occasion was special with a conviction that was difficult to argue with even when you were the adult in the room nominally responsible for arguing with it.Hope stayed up until midnight by negotiated agreement, having made the case over several days with the focused legal precision of a child who had absorbed, through sheer proximity, a working understanding of how arguments were most effectively structured. Eli fell asleep on the sofa at ten-thirty in the particular, boneless way of small people whose bodies simply override their intentions, and was transferred to bed by Killian with the practiced, seamless ease that had, by this point, become entirely muscle memory. At midnight, the four of us who remained awake stood on the back step watching whatever fireworks were visible above

Chapter 67

The secondary school application process arrived in February with the particular, bureaucratic intensity of something that had been clearly designed by people who had never attempted to complete it while simultaneously managing a household containing a two-year-old with strong opinions about breakfast cereal and a seven-year-old who wanted to be involved in every decision that affected her future.Hope had opinions. Significant, well-researched, colour-coded opinions that she presented across three separate family meetings with the focused, prepared energy of someone who had decided that the selection of her secondary school was not a decision to be made by adults on her behalf but a collaborative strategic process requiring full stakeholder participation."She's seven," Killian observed, after the first of these meetings, with the expression of a man simultaneously impressed and faintly overwhelmed."She's been thinking about this since she was five," I said. "She mentioned it to me

Chapter 68

The call came on a Thursday in March, from a number Killian didn't recognize, and he almost didn't answer it.He told me about it that evening, sitting at the kitchen table after the children were in bed, with the particular, careful quality of someone who had spent the day deciding how to approach a thing and had arrived at the conclusion that the only approach was the direct one."It was a journalist," he said. "Not a gossip column. An investigative reporter. She's writing a piece about the youth sector, specifically about the funding landscape and the people running programs like mine. She wants to interview me.""That sounds like good press for the center," I said carefully, reading the quality of his tone."It is," he agreed. "The center part is fine. The piece is legitimate, she's done serious work before, and the coverage would be genuinely useful for the expanded building's funding applications." He paused, his hands wrapped around his coffee mug with more deliberateness than

Spring came to our garden with the particular, almost aggressive enthusiasm of something that had been waiting through a long winter and had no intention of being understated about its arrival, Killian's vegetable beds erupting with the kind of confident, overlapping growth that suggested his soil amendments over the winter had been considerably more effective than he'd been willing to predict aloud in case the prediction constituted a jinx."I told you the compost rotation would make a difference," Kade said, surveying the beds with the satisfied expression of someone whose advice had been implemented and vindicated."You told me," Killian agreed, without looking up from where he was training a climbing pea variety along a new support structure with the focused attention of someone conducting genuinely important work. "I also did the actual compost rotation, which I feel deserves at least equal credit.""Equal," Kade said generously."More than equal," Killian countered, and they bot

Chapter 70

Summer arrived with the particular, unhurried confidence of a season that knew it had time, the days lengthening slowly until the evenings stretched past nine o'clock and the garden became, in those last golden hours before dark, the centre of gravity for everyone in the house.Killian's vegetable garden had reached, by July, a state of productive abundance that slightly exceeded even his optimistic projections, a fact he mentioned with studied casualness approximately twice a week while ensuring that both Kade and I had full visibility of the yield data he'd been tracking on a spreadsheet that had, somewhere in the last six months, evolved from a simple record into a genuine horticultural document."This is either a hobby or a second career," Kade observed one evening, reviewing the spreadsheet with the expression of a man who respected thoroughness but was mildly concerned about the trajectory."It's a hobby," Killian said. "A well-documented hobby.""You've projected the tomato yie
