It was just an ordinary good morning: clear sky, the city already moving by seven, Agnes in the studio kitchen at six forty-five setting out the breakfast spread with the quiet efficiency of someone who took her responsibilities seriously and expected others to do the same. The egg things with the herbs on top, exactly as promised. Fruit. He sat across from me on one of the couches in the reception area, which was where I had intentionally chosen to meet him. I didn't want us having this conversation inside my office.
