21. You're safe here

"You don't want to answer this? Fine, tell me what just happened?" Kai pointed towards the fountain. I pushed some hair behind my ear, "I don't know, old pipes burst like that all the time."Kai let out a laugh, but it was not a real one, "No, they don't explode like that."We were near the main gate of the college and no one else was around us, which was not surprising as almost everyone was attending their classes. Someone must have stopped the water supply to the fountain as well. "You're overreacting."“You think I’m overreacting? That fountain exploded, Celeste.”I didn't miss a second before responding, “It was an accident.”But Kai took a step forward in my direction, “No. You looked terrified before it happened.”I blinked a few times. Kai didn't stop asking questions, "Ever since that guy showed up, you've started acting weird. Why?"Once again, I was silent. I had no response, but I tried to end the conversation, "You're overreacting. Why are you obsessed with him?"Kai

22. You always have a choice

With the blink of an eye, Lucien was standing in front of me. I stood up as well, maintaining some distance from the woman. Her eyes held a different type of spark, she moved her gaze lazily from the water towards me. “Earlier than expected.”"Don't," Lucien warned, hiding me half behind himself. She stayed silent for a moment, it seemed like a conversation was already happening between the two of them. "You brought her here.""I didn't have a choice," Lucien replied. Her lips curled upwards slightly, “You always have a choice.”Lucien's hands curled into a fist. "Lighten up, I was just passing by," she replied casually. Lucien didn't say anything in response. A minute passed, there was a thick silence between us before Lucien took a few steps to cover the distance. The woman looked unbothered. “She’s waking up too quickly.” She commented. Lucien's shoulders stiffened slightly.Just like Lucien, she didn't look surprised. It was as though she knew everything as well. Luci

23. Fear makes it worse

I couldn't sleep. Not because of nightmares or whispers or burning sensation on my mark. How was I supposed to control something I didn't understand? Kai didn't leave me alone, although our conversations were not flowing like they used to. My eyes kept searching for a pair of black eyes the entire day. But I couldn't find him. Kai dropped me off at home. Before I could walk inside the main gate, I felt his presence. I spun around quickly to face him. "Come with me."He opened the door of his car. I looked around to check if anyone was present around us before taking a seat. This time, I knew where we were going. I sat there, enjoying the silence. There was no music in the car, it was the exact opposite of how Kai and I travelled. "Where were you?" I finally broke the silence as we started walking into the forest. "Had some work.""What work?"He raised his brow and gave me a look, which I understood way too well now. Only the sound of our footsteps and distant birds fill

24. You can't keep suppressing it.

The universe was against me. I had been trying to control the water for a few days now and yet I was not learning anything. Surprisingly, Lucien was not throwing condescending comments every 5 minutes and was being patient. I was tired and frustrated...both combinations were a disaster near the water. Just as I was thinking, the water started moving in my glass. Annoyed, I picked it up and emptied the entire contents of the glass at once.Kai sat silently observing my actions without uttering a word. I didn't know if I should have been thankful for it or prepare myself for the worst. The ride home was again filled with music without conversation. I decided to skip my evening training with Lucien and run inside the house to crawl under my blanket. "Celeste."My feet stopped at once. "Where have you been?" Mom folded her arms. The expression on her face was, as usual, calm but her eyes and her tone were saying I was in trouble. "College," I replied. "Your clothes had mud."I

25. Why are you helping me?

I was now on my bed, still looking at the bathroom. Lucien stood up without saying anything and closed the door. My eyes started feeling heavy."Don't go," I muttered the words before falling asleep. My eyes opened slowly, the window was still open, showing the dark sky. My gaze next moved to Lucien, who was sitting on the chair near the window, looking outside. That's when everything came back, from the fog to the red-eyed girl. I sat up, "You're still here."Lucien walked towards me with a glass of water. I hesitated before touching the glass. He might have read my thoughts as he slowly brought the glass near my mouth. I took a few sips. "Why are you helping me?"He put the glass back and went to sit on the chair again. “I ask myself that constantly.” The words were low, like they were not meant for me to hear. We sat in my bedroom, not exchanging any words. Lucien looked uncomfortable sitting on the chair, which was too small for him. "It's alright you can sit with me."

26. What are you?

I woke up with an empty feeling. I scanned the room and realised I was now alone. There was no sign of Lucien. Lazily, I got out of bed and started walking towards the bathroom but froze the minute my hand touched the cold door knob, the memories kept rushing back. Inhaling a deep breath and preparing myself for the worst, I opened the door, only to find it clean. There were no signs of last night's events. A small smile made its way on my face after realising Lucien cleaned it before leaving. I quickly took a shower, got dressed, had breakfast and went to college with Kai. Even though I planned to reach there alone, Kai didn't leave me any option. Kai had been trying to make things normal between us once again. The air had started getting uncomfortable between us, which was new for both of us. "And that's how I ended up stealing the horse without realising it," Kai ended the story. I had missed most of it, but still gave a smile to him. His grip on the wheel tightened, bu

27. The water remembers

I couldn't stop thinking about what Lucien said. I was not sad or scared...I was annoyed by his words. Every time he answered one of my questions, five more questions appeared in my head. A sigh escaped from my lips, which didn't go unnoticed by Kai. "The weather is nice today, no rain so far.""Yeah," I answered as we continued walking across the campus. I stopped when I realised Kai was no longer walking with me. I faced him. "Did I do something?" His question caught me off guard, "I-what are you talking about?"There was sadness in his eyes, not the usual spark he always carried. "You're treating me like I'm the enemy."I felt a sharp stab of guilt in my heart, "You're not.""Then stop looking at me like you have to lie every time I ask a question."I couldn't find the correct words to answer him. He kept staring at me like a lost puppy, probably waiting for me to answer. I lowered my gaze to stare at the ground, unable to tell him the truth. "Very well," he gave a small

28. What secrets were buried in this lake?

Who was she? The question had been eating me alive, there was something so familiar about her. For the first time, I went to the lake without Lucien. I left him a text and skipped my classes. I knew I had to know the truth. The sun was shining brightly over my head as I stood one step away from the lake. I could only see the sun on the surface of the water. I bent down slowly, putting my hand in the water. I let the cool sensation calm down my nerves. The water curled around my fingers as though it recognised me.I closed my eyes and let all the thoughts escape from my head. I let out a long breath before focusing on the woman whom I had seen the last time. Pretty soon, the water started moving in circles. I didn't open my eyes immediately. I waited for a few seconds, and when I opened my eyes, I couldn't believe what was waiting for me. The lake was frozen. The water had turned into ice, and my hand was still stuck inside it. Strangely, I didn't panic. My eyes focused on t

29. Stay away from me

Sleep was not a stranger anymore. The moment my body hit the bed, my eyes felt like they had been glued shut. The image of people running and screaming was the last thing I remembered before I fell asleep. **I found myself standing in an endless ocean. There was nothing around me...just still water. There were no islands, boats, or any other sign of life. I looked down. I was standing barefoot on the surface of the water. I didn't dare to move. I was scared of falling. Instead, I scanned the area. The water seemed dark in an unnatural manner, almost bluish-black. The sky was the same as the water, the only difference was the moon, which was scattering silver-white light across the water's surface as if it were a path. I decided to follow the path. With hesitation, I took a step and placed it on the surface. Surprisingly, it seemed like a normal floor, a very cold marble floor. There was no destination in my mind as I continued following the path that the moon had picked fo

30. Until I found her

**UNKNOWN POV**The room was dark...too dark for normal people. There was just a tiny bulb glimmering. But even in the darkness, I could clearly see the symbol of the moon that had been taunting me. There was only one window in the room, which was guarded heavily by the wooden blocks and then with a layer of newspaper. I couldn't see the moonlight, not until I found her. I was looking at the photograph of the mark in my hand. The edges of the photograph curled slightly beneath my fingers.Hundreds of photographs.Years of searching. And somehow it always ended with the moon. The tricks it had played over the past years. There was a loud knock on the door, followed by a pause of 2 seconds before it was opened. I grunted. "We have information."The sound of papers hitting the table made me stand instantly. I ran to grab the papers. It was her. I took the picture near the bulb and memorised her face. The hair, the silver strands. My grip tightened around the photograph, dam
