Then the door flew open without a knock and my assistant, Mark, walked in with a tablet clutched in his hand. “Sir! Your wife, she’s finally woken up after the accident!” Wife. Slowly I lifted my head, letting my glare do the talking first, which made him flinch so hard I thought he’d drop the tablet. “I—I mean, your ex-wife, sir. Lila. The hospital just called. She’s conscious, asking for… well, they said she’s stable now.” He swallowed, eyes darting anywhere but at me. “Would you… would you like to visit her? They said she’s been disoriented.” I didn’t answer right away. Could he actually hear himself? Why should I visit her? We were done, the divorce papers were signed, the ink dry, and the only thing left between us was a pile of medical bills I’d paid out of some twisted sense of obligation.
