When I reached the back door, I pushed it open with my shoulder and stepped outside, squinting against the harsh bright light. I walked straight to the old garden shed at the far end of the property. My arms were shaking from the weight of Peanuts’ body, but I didn’t stop. I set him down gently on the grass for a moment, then grabbed a shovel from the corner and walked back to the open space near the edge of the garden, where the grass was softer and the trees offered a little shade. Without hesitation, I started digging. Every thrust of the shovel sent fresh pain through my ribs and arms, but I kept going.
