The next morning, I woke up feeling like exhaustion was crushing me. It was not only physical exhaustion from waking up so early and going for a run in the middle of the night, but emotional exhaustion too. It felt like I was getting hit over and over again by something heavy.Last night, I had dreams about getting back in time and helping Kael through his first shift. Those dreams were wonderful and perfect. But when I woke up, I was left with reality.I was an absent father.Ever since I found out I had a son, I could not stop thinking about all the things I had missed. Birthdays, pretending to be the tooth fairy and Easter bunny, seeing his face when he saw the ocean for the first time—I had missed all of it. There was no second chance for those moments. The thought of Elara and Kael coming back, and Kael being so close to his first shift, had made me excited because I thought there was at least one more big moment I could be there for. But instead, I had been sleeping in a fancy h

“You see,” Varek said, “the old man really did sign the pack’s money over to me, but money was not the main thing he gave away. The biggest thing he signed over was the pack itself, along with the town. Since your family is the alpha family, you own the papers for many businesses and houses inside the town limits. Basically, your family owns almost the entire town. And now all of it belongs to me, thanks to the drunk man who fathered you.”Jaxon and I growled at the same time, showing our anger and shock. This could not be real. There was no way this was happening.“The old man started thinking more clearly near the end,” Varek continued. “But he never knew we tricked him. He believed he was signing the pack over to Vale.” Varek pointed toward my brother, who was now crying openly on the ground. “One day, because I told him to, Vale disappeared and left the old man thinking his bastard son had run away with everything. Without money to keep the pack going, he came begging me for help

The next day, after not hearing anything from Orion, I called Stormy and asked if she wanted to meet for lunch. We met at a small café downtown, and I told her everything that had happened during the last two days.Stormy poked at her salad with her fork and gave a small shrug. “Maybe you should do what he says?”“Leave town?” I said in shock. “Are you serious?”“I kind of am,” Stormy replied. “Orion is not the kind of person who reacts quickly without thinking. If he's worried, then maybe you should be worried too.”“Maybe,” I said with a sigh while pushing my club sandwich around on my plate. “I just wish he would tell me what the problem is. I hate not knowing what's happening. If he's scared, then I want to know the reason.”“Okay, I understand that,” Stormy admitted. “I would probably feel the same way.”“This has to be more than just money and property. For Orion to be acting this strange, it has to be something much bigger.”“I agree,” Stormy said. “From the outside, this sound

“Understand what? That Varek is threatening to kill your brother if you don’t do what he wants? That he could kill me or does God know what to do if I’m still here? That he could kill my son?” She threw one hand in the air and slammed it down on the table in frustration. “Or do I not understand the part where you were planning to come here and force us apart? Break up with me or make me reject you? Is that the part I’m missing?”Goddamn it, Jaxon, I growled in my mind. My wolf was growling and pacing in my head, scratching at the ground. He was furious at me for what I had been trying to do.“I didn’t want you involved in this,” I finally said. “That’s all. I wanted you safe, no matter what.”“And is that how you think a relationship works, Orion?”“I don’t... I thought...” I shook my head.“I’m not part of the pack,” Elara said. “I’m supposed to be your fated mate, right? That means you don’t get to hide things like this from me, even if you think it’s for my own good. How am I suppo

Orion nodded slowly. “I think I can. Maybe. I’m sorry for all of this. I really wish things had happened differently. This is not how I imagined any of this would turn out.”“Yeah,” I said. “I didn’t imagine it this way either. But this is the situation we’ve been given, and we have to deal with it. That’s all we can do.”He stood up and looked around the house. Then his eyes moved sadly toward the hallway where Kael’s room was.“I guess I should go now. Uh, you guys probably need to start packing.”He took a step toward the front door, and I walked beside him. Before opening it, he turned and looked at me again. He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, but no words came out. Instead, he pulled me close and kissed me.Our lips met in a deep, passionate kiss that completely took my breath away, and I kissed him back.In that one kiss, it felt like all the years of pain, longing, sadness, and emotion came pouring out of him. It was like he was trying to tell me everything he
