MENODORA’S POVA scream pulls me back to reality. The last hunter, the one who managed to break through his defense is now dead. The silence that follows is almost as immediate as the fight that just ensued. So does the physical crash that comes right after. Every gasp I take in feels like I'm waging a war against my own body, my lungs burn as they expand against the constriction of my strained chest muscles.A gritty and heavy sensation weighs down on my eyelids and when I try to look closer at him, standing there and breathing hard, blood splattered across his skin, it's almost impossible to focus. I feel a slow throbbing behind my eyes, the first crack of the sun behind the clouds, too bright for my eyes to handle. But at least, we're still both alive and that's all that truly mattered…not the wounds, not this throbbing behind my eyes, not the strong scent of blood filling the air.The ground seems to rush up to meet me as my legs surrender…no longer having the strength to fight

MENODORA’S POV His expression turns serious again, every hint of playfulness wiped off and in its place is a steely look of frightening determination."You're not the first to tell me I'd get myself killed.”"But at least those people didn't want you dead…or did they?”“Oh, you bet they did." The way he says it so easily throws me off. Like someone who has been followed so much by death, it's become a familiar companion to him.I don't like that his words cause my chest to feel tight. I'm not an alien to his pain, maybe not on the same level, but I totally understand that feeling of constantly being haunted by death."Still not an excuse to be reckless,” I say instead, breaking eye contact with him.“Never said it was," he shrugs and silence settles over us again. I don't realize when I start to doze off until I am awakened by movements. I turn to see him crouch near a fallen tree I didn't notice before. In one of the hollows, he pulls out what looks like a makeshift first aid kit…

MENODORA'S POVI refuse to rise to the bait he has thrown out for me, choosing instead to stay quiet and let the silence stretch between us like a drawn rubber band waiting to snap. My eyes are drawn to him and I can't help but watch him closely. He's still the same as before, totally unbothered and in control of himself. Someone who saw him would not even be able to fathom that we had both just barely escaped from being killed…unlike me, looking like I went through a train wreck and came out totally harmed.“Aren't you going to sleep, I'm awake now," I say instead, half a question and half a suggestion.“Ummm…" he looks at me contemplating my words. “No, I don't feel sleepy." I'm not sure if he's lying to make me feel better or if he really isn't feeling sleepy.“I can keep watch for us both," I don't know why I even bother to try again.“In your condition?" He looks at me like I just suggested that dinosaurs are not extinct from our world."Nothing's wrong with me,” I snapped back

ORVAX’S POVThe first thing that stands out to me is their fear. They're not afraid of me, but of…Menodora. They try to hide it, but I still catch it in the way their shoulders tense at the subtle almost imperceivable shifts in her scent. It's there in the way their eyes linger too long on her hands, on the claws that she is trying so hard not to show.“Interesting," my wolf hums in approval. “It is good that they fear her." When most people look at her, all they can see is danger, a curse, an unnatural phenomenon that should not exist. But me, I see her restraint and that's even by far more dangerous than any curse. The rogues that stand before us do not understand this yet, but soon they will.“You claimed her as if she is yours now?" Dren asks casually, though there is nothing casual about the way his eyes keep track of her every movement and change in expression. I think of the best way to answer his question."How do I even give an answer to him when I don't have an answer mysel

ORVAX'S POV “You're staring so hard at me, if I were butter, I'd have melted under the intensity of your stare," she says suddenly without looking in my direction.“I'm just assessing for threats." I didn't expect her to notice, she didn't even seem to be paying attention.“And by any chance, am I one of those threats?" A faint scoff leaves her. How do I explain to her that she is indeed a threat, but not in the way she thinks?“Well…you could be. Can't really tell." That catches her attention and she turns to look at me.“Yet here you are…still staying.” I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I can swear that I hear her voice break just slightly."She's never been chosen before or allowed to choose. This is all new and uncharted territory for her.” I have to constantly remind myself. “Yes. I am here, still staying." I meet her gaze steadily, mirroring her posture and parroting her words back to her.An emotion I cannot name, flickers across her face too quickly for me to ca
