*ERIC*Five weeks.Apparently, five weeks was long enough for Jamira to forget everything she said after Ezra was born.We tried to honor the doctor’s orders. She came up with all types of excuses until she couldn’t.Tired.Sore.Never again.Don’t touch me.Especially that last one.Because she was currently doing a terrible job of keeping that promise. And I wasn’t about to remind her.I was still a man at the end of the day.And despite my efforts to fully ride these six weeks out, all it took was for me to walk into the kitchen and see Jamira bent over looking for something under the sink. She had on my shirt again with nothing else underneath. She knew what she was doing to me.I had just gotten out of the shower, so I wasn’t about to put on clothes.I walked up behind her and tugged at the hem of my shirt.“Eric, stop.”I ignored her.She tried to squat, but I only gripped her waist.“Eric, we have one more week.”“Fuck that week.”Her knees buckled. She leaned into me as she st

*JAMIRA*The front door opened right as Ezra finally closed his eyes.Of course.I looked down at him.His mouth was hanging open. One fist was tucked underneath his chin.I had spent the last fifteen minutes walking around the living room patting his back while he fought sleep like he had somewhere to be.Six weeks old already. No job.No bills. No responsibilities.Still couldn’t just take his ass to sleep.“Keep your voice down,” Eric said from the hallway.“I know.”“You always say you know.”“Because I do.”“Then why I gotta keep telling you?”“I don’t know.”I smiled. There they were.Kayla came around the corner first with Mr. Jingles tucked under her arm and her backpack hanging off one shoulder.Eric followed behind her.She saw me and smiled.“Hi, Mimi.”“Hey, baby. How’d it go?”“Good.”That was quick.I looked at Eric.He took Kayla’s backpack off her shoulder and set it near the stairs.“It went fine.”I looked back at Kayla.“Just fine?”“No. It was fun.”Eric walked tow

*WALT* I heard the doorknob turn. Then nothing. I waited. Still nothing. I poured the coffee anyway. Two cups. She said she didn’t want any. Ayana said a lot of shit. She rarely meant any of it. I picked mine up and took a drink. The front door still hadn’t opened. I looked toward the hallway. What the hell was she doing? I set my cup down and walked out of the kitchen. She was standing exactly where I left her. Shoes on. Purse over her shoulder. Hand on the doorknob. Just standing there. I leaned against the wall. “You good?” Her shoulders moved. “Yeah.” Bullshit. “Okay.” She turned around. “You gotta stop saying that.” “Saying what?” “Okay.” I looked at her. “Okay.” Her eyes narrowed. I smiled. She looked back at the door. I waited. Wasn’t much else to do besides watch this train wreck of a human slowly realize what the rest of us already did. If she wanted to leave, I’d take her home. If she wanted to stay,

*ERIC*Today was the first day in what felt like forever that I had an actual day to myself.Any and everything Eric wanted to do, he could.I didn’t have to watch numbers, answer phone calls, or attend meetings.Hell, I didn’t even have to look after Ezra for real.I fully intended to enjoy every last minute of it.But for some reason beyond basic understanding, my ass was outside watering those goddamn tulips. That alone pissed me off.Not because I had anything against flowers.I just didn’t remember agreeing to become responsible for keeping them alive.Mira wanted them.Mira picked them.Mira decided exactly where they needed to go.Then somehow—I was the motherfucker outside with the hose.I adjusted the nozzle and sprayed the ones near the walkway.I was tempted to put it on full blast to blow them bastards off their stems.“You’re giving them too much water.”I looked toward the porch.Thorne was walking up the driveway.Of course he was.I looked back at the flowers.“Didn’t

*JAMIRA*By the time I got Ezra out of the car, he was wet and had milk all over him. Of course he did. He’d overeaten again. On top of that, he pooped. But he lay there asleep and fully content with his decision to commit a crime against his mother’s nose.Of course.Hadn’t been asleep when I was trying to get myself together. Hadn’t been asleep when I put him in the car seat. Hadn’t been asleep for half the ride over here either, because apparently staring at the back of my seat and leaving me with work to do was important business. But now that I had somewhere to go?Knocked the fuck out and stankin’.I stood there looking at him for a second before carefully unbuckling him.“Must be nice.”He didn’t care.I lifted him against my chest, making sure his head was supported, and grabbed his diaper bag with my other hand. His little socked feet hung out beneath the blanket I’d tucked around him.At least the socks were still on.That was one thing about my baby. His feet were staying c
