*JAMIRA*“Sheesh, girl, sit your heavily pregnant ass down somewhere. I assure you, WE got it.”“Yana, I’m not handicapped.”“Yeah, but you’re swollen, and your waddling is slowing us down.”I held my lower back as I found somewhere to sit and prop up my feet. I thought things would move faster with me helping, but everyone insisted I stay out of the way.Especially Eric.Ayana found a seat next to me and watched the guys move the furniture and boxes off the truck.Today was the day I’d been waiting weeks for, and everything felt so surreal. So much had changed in such a short amount of time that none of us had really gotten a chance to sit down and relax.Or even process what life had in store for us.The house Eric purchased was huge. It had seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, two dining rooms, a finished basement, a kitchen big enough to fit the wraparound driveway in, and a sunroom. When I asked why we needed so much space, he simply said it was for our “children.”Children.Plural.I

*AYANA*I took the day off to help Jamira get settled into the new house. At least that’s what I told myself when I called out.So far, I hadn’t done shit. Not one box.Not one bag.Not one hanger.Nothing.I was sitting on her brand-new couch with my feet tucked underneath me, staring at my phone like I paid rent there. My screen lit up again. You busy?I smiled.Obviously.Doing what?I looked around.Jamira was standing in the middle of the living room with a box in her arms.I looked back at my phone.Helping Jamira unpack. You?I frowned. What you tryin’ to say?Three dots appeared.Disappeared.Came back.Nothing.Say what you were gonna say.I value my peace.I rolled my eyes, but the smile came right back. This man was irritating.Come hang out with me later.I stared at the message. That wasn’t the first time he’d asked.Or the second.Lately, Walt had been finding all kinds of reasons to text me.Did I eat? What was I doing? Was I working?Did I want coffee?Did I want to go

*JAMIRA*“Aaaahhhh!”“PUSH!”Eric stood next to me, holding my hand while I squeezed his for dear life. He tried to soothe me, but the pain was unbearable.“Aaaahhhh!” I screamed as I pushed through it.“You’re almost there. He’s crowning.”“Baby, you can do this.”I glared at him. That was easy for him to say.He wasn’t ripping from the front to the back.I had gone into labor early that morning. No warning. No nothing.Just wet panties, blood, and cramps that’ll make you question why you like sex in the first place.Pain.Pressure.Noise.In the most unholy hours of the day.It had been funny watching Eric panic while trying to get everything together for me.At least, it would’ve been funny if my contractions had let me fully enjoy it.I watched him scramble around for almost ten minutes before I finally told him my hospital bag was already packed in the closet.Eric did manage to finally get Ayana off her ass and help with something. She was responsible for Kayla while we were at

*ERIC*By the time I pulled into the driveway, Jamira was asleep.I looked over at her.Head against the window.Mouth slightly open.Gone.I smiled. She’d been fighting sleep for the last twenty minutes.Every time her eyes closed, she’d open them again and ask me something about Ezra. Was he breathing okay? Was the blanket too close to his face? Was the car too cold? Then she’d turn around and check on him herself.Five minutes later, she’d do it again. Now she was finally out.I looked in the rearview mirror.Ezra was asleep too.Tiny-ass person.Big-ass responsibility. My son.I still hadn’t gotten used to that.My son.I looked at him a little longer. Then the front door opened. My mom stepped outside.I was shocked.Damn, that was fast.I’d called her as soon as Jamira and Ezra were discharged to ask if she’d help Jamira around the house for a few days while she recovered.Thankfully, she agreed. Then Kayla came running out behind her.“Uncle Eric!”I immediately put my finger t

*KACIE* Losing custody of Kayla did something to me. Something I wasn’t ready to accept. The possibility of her never living with me or even coming to visit sat with me day in and day out. I kept going in there as if it would magically make her appear. It was tragic. I finally stopped buying things for Kayla’s room. That lasted four days. On the fifth, I bought a lamp. It had glitter in the base. Not loose glitter. I wasn’t completely stupid. The last thing I needed was sparkly shit embedded in my carpet until the end of time. But when I saw it, I thought of her. So I bought it. Then I got home and stood in the doorway holding the bag. “You’re an idiot.” The room didn’t disagree. I walked inside anyway. The six decorative pillows were still there. Still stupid. Still too many. I put the lamp on her desk. Plugged it in. Turned it on. Little flecks of gold caught the light. I stared at it. “Okay.” It was cute. She would’ve liked it.
