(Kane)The heavy rumble of my dual-axle pickup truck was a grounding, comforting vibration against the soles of my boots. We hit the state highway just as the clock cleared 1:00 AM, the massive black chassis cutting cleanly through the thick coastal fog that had haunted the campus all weekend. The heavy mist clung to the trees lining the asphalt, but the truck”s high-beams tore through the darkness, carving out a private path just for the two of us.In the truck bed, our entire lives were strapped down under tight, weather-proof webbing”two sets of elite professional-grade skates, raw iron weight plates, and the heavy leather folders containing the freshly signed contracts for the National Professional Vanguard Circuit. That paperwork was our armor. It was the physical proof that the old man”s corporate chains were permanently broken, and that the corporate boardrooms no longer held sway over my career.I kept one hand casual on the steering wheel, my eyes scanning the long, dark st

(Kane) The engine died with a heavy, metallic click, leaving the interior of the truck cabin momentarily silent against the low, ambient hum of the capital district. Through the tinted windshield, the Vanguard High-Performance Complex didn't look like an athletic facility; it looked like a fortress. Sleek black basalt walls rose four stories high, inlaid with continuous strips of gold LED lighting that pulsed in tandem with the facility's internal climate grid. The air out here smelled different than the coastal ”cleaner, sharper, heavily treated with industrial filtration and the faint, unmistakable scent of premium rubber compound from the indoor tracks. "We're on their clock now, rookie," I said, sliding my phone into my pocket as I pushed open the heavy truck door. The early morning air hit my chest like a cold sheet, instantly burning away the last remnants of the five-hour drive. I walked around to the passenger side, my boots crunching rhythmically against the pristin

(Kane) The diagnostic belt screamed beneath my boots as the automated incline shifted to a brutal seven percent. My lungs filled with the sharp, synthetic chill of the lab's oxygen mix, but my stride never fractured. I kept my eyes locked on the telemetry monitor directly ahead, where our two data lines”mine a heavy, jagged obsidian vector, Danica’s s a sleek, laser-focused gold ribbon”ran perfectly parallel, cutting right through the established professional benchmarks. "Resistance scaling to tier-maximum," Vance’s voice cut through the comms, cold and completely detached. "Ninety seconds remaining in the initial block. Jones is trending right on the margin." I didn't need the monitor to tell me that. Through my peripheral vision, I could see the slight, tense rigidity in Danica’s s shoulders. The absolute violence of the capital’s testing protocol was trying to find the precise threshold where her collegiate endurance gave out. But every time her line dipped close to that

(Kane) The main training oval was vast, a cavernous ring of high-grade composite track circling a sunken infield bristling with hydraulic weight racks and biometric telemetry towers. As our boots hit the surface, the rhythm of the room shifted. The synchronized thud-thud-thud of the veteran pack faltered for a fraction of a second. It was subtle”a minor hitch in their cadence that only a seasoned anchor would notice”but it was there. Twenty pairs of eyes tracked us as we peeled onto the outer lane, our matching navy kits declaring our presence before Director Vance could even take the microphone on the central observation deck. "Form up on the secondary baseline, Harlow," a voice barked from the head of the pack. The speaker was Garrison Vance”no relation to the director, but the undisputed primary anchor of the Capital Syndicate. He was a five-year veteran, his frame a dense, weathered mass of muscle and scar tissue, his own navy kit faded from hundreds of hours under the h

(Kane) The silence that settled over the primary training oval was heavier than the exhaustion racking the veteran line. Garrison Vance didn't look up from his boots as the medical technicians descended onto the track with their portable recovery packs, their faces masks of professional indifference. His data line on the display tower was still pulsing a cautionary yellow, a glaring, necrotic stain below our twin green vectors. The rest of the Syndicate shuffled toward the hydration bays in a rigid, defensive huddle, their standard professional swagger completely drained by the final five-hundred-meter split. They weren't just tired; they were obsolete. "They're already recalculating the media allocations," Danica murmured against my chest, her voice low enough to escape the ambient microphones of the tracking towers. She didn't lean heavily into my arm she kept her weight balanced, her posture commanding respect even while cooling down. "Look at the executive deck." I glanc
