(Kane) The atmosphere in the subterranean testing lab was thick with the scent of ionizing radiation and scorched circuitry. We were three days out from the exhibition, and the "Safety Observation" protocols had already been installed. Every inch of the track was now bristling with redundant telemetry arrays ”glistening, insect-like sensor clusters that pulsed with an incessant, clinical red light. They were designed to catch the smallest deviation, to flag the slightest tremor in our form. They were designed to hold us to a standard we had already shattered. "The system is hyper-sensitive now," Danica murmured, her hand hovering over the interface of the central command console. She was dressed in her practice kit, the cobalt trim of her suit catching the harsh, flickering glare of the overhead monitors. "Even the humidity change from our breath is registering as a variance on the tertiary grid." "Let it calibrate to the heat," I rumbled, walking toward the starting blocks

(Kane) The executive lounge was cold, but the tension in the room was high enough to make the air feel electrified. Director Vance sat at the head of the obsidian table, his fingers laced together, staring at a stack of physical, paper-based documents”a rare, archaic sight in an era of pure digital integration. "The Northern Division has filed an official protest," Vance began, his voice devoid of his usual corporate cadence. It was raw, tired. "They claim the telemetry failure at the testing lab was not a mechanical error. They’re accusing your unit of intentional signal jamming." I didn't take a seat. I stood behind Danica, my hand resting firmly on the back of her chair. "If they have proof of signal jamming, they should have produced it for the board. Instead, all they have is a blank monitor and a bruised ego." Vance looked at me, his eyes tired. "The board doesn't need proof, Harlow. They need a narrative. If they can sell the idea that you compromised the safety of th

(Danica) The transit car hissed to a halt at the exhibition complex, the pressurized doors sliding open to reveal a staging area that was a stark, cavernous void. The Northern Division”s home turf didnt smell like the capitals synthetic ozone; it smelled of deep, subterranean damp and the metallic tang of heavy-duty machinery. We stepped onto the platform, our boots hitting the deck with a synchronized, rhythmic thud that echoed into the rafters. There were no cameras here, no teleprompters, and no pacing lights. Just the raw, industrial architecture of the Northern legacy. "They're not even meeting us at the gate," I noted, my eyes scanning the shadows of the catwalks above. "They're trying to project a lack of concern. They want us to walk into the facility feeling like outsiders." "Let them play the ghost game," Kane rumbled. He reached out, his hand wrapping firmly around my waist and pulling me back into the shelter of a support pillar. The movement was sudden, possessi

(Kane) The facility was a graveyard of abandoned gear and chemical foam. Miller’s tactical squad hadn’t been trained for a kinetic breach in zero-visibility conditions; they had been trained to monitor sensor pings and follow the light-bars. When the mist hit, they were nothing more than blind men stumbling through a labyrinth, and we were the predators who owned the dark. I moved through the fog, guided not by sight, but by the rhythmic, heavy thud of Danica’s blades as she circled the perimeter. We didn't need to communicate. Every time a shadow flinched, I was there”a kinetic anchor that hit with the force of a falling bulkhead. By the time the atmospheric scrubbers kicked in to clear the bay, the Northern squad was effectively neutralized, slumped against the reinforced steel pylons, their uniforms shredded and their pride stripped bare. Miller was the last to go down. I pinned him against the same pylon where, minutes earlier, I had been lost in the ghost of Danica’s touc

(Danica) The tunnel to the sector-four testing site was supposed to be a standard, brightly lit thoroughfare. Instead, it was a graveyard of dead electronics. Every overhead light had been shattered, the shards of glass crunching like frozen teeth under our boots. The air here didn”t smell like the sanitized, filtered oxygen of the capital; it smelled of scorched insulation and the sharp, metallic tang of an ozone leak. "The power grid is completely blind," I whispered, my voice barely carrying over the oppressive silence of the tunnel. I kept my hand on the hilt of the manual emergency release on my belt, my eyes straining against the absolute darkness ahead. "They didn't just shut down the facility. They wiped it." Kane was a wall of shadow beside me, his movements completely silent. He hadn't spoken since we crossed the threshold of the sector-four bulkhead, but I could feel his focus radiating off him like heat. He wasn't tracking the path; he was tracking the absence of
