Chapter 21

Wren’s povI shook my head slowly, unable to speak. “I still have…”“We have a class going on and a project I can’t handle alone.” Alex reminded me with a sharp, unapologetic tone. She stood in the hallway outside the door, Dani’s jacket draped over my shoulders. I could hear the professor talking to other students and shuffles of paper with low murmurs.Dani didn’t spare Alex a glance, his eyes remained on me. “Call me when you’re done.” He said. “I’ll take you home.”I blinked. “You don’t have to.”“I know.” He crouched slightly and helped me stand straight although he didn’t pull away immediately, he waited until my knees stopped trembling. I hadn’t thought he would notice but then his grip tightened for a moment before he let me go.“T-thank you.” I stuttered, looking away from him the moment I recalled all that had happened between us. His jacket smelled like cedar and citrus, my chest thumped hard as I took a step away from him once I was sure I could stand on my own two feet.A

Chapter 22

Wren’s POV “What the fuck did you say?” I scoffed. “Do you think I’m dumb?” I almost raised my voice. He closed the distance between us but I took a step further away from him. “Why are you acting childish? I knew you were here and decided to see how you would react.”I burst out laughing, almost leading to tears as my belly ached from it, he remained still, laughing awkwardly, I stopped abruptly and stared at him. “Do you think you're talking to a child? What the hell do you take me for?”I turned to leave, I thought about ending this on a good note but he just placed the final pieces, nothing more left to be said.“Wren.” He called to me but I was already walking down the corridor.“Wren.” He calls out, sounding closer. “We should talk about this.”I ignored him and kept walking, I was so close to the stairs that the maid who had let me in was nowhere to be seen. I continued my way down the stairs. My phone was in Dani’s jacket, and I grabbed it without looking, a few steps away fr

Chapter 23

Wren’s povBlake didn’t loosen his grip when he pulled me out of the storage room. He dragged me into the hallway as I stumbled, I pushed myself against the wall with my free hand, my shoulders were screaming in pain from where I had earlier been injured.“Let go.” I continued to pull away from him. “We’re going upstairs.” His voice had gone quiet, something he does when he’s extremely pissed but in this situation, he doesn’t deserve the slightest bit of that.I dug my heels into the floor to pull away from him. “I’m not going anywhere with you,” I screamed. He walked anyway and once again I was pulled by him because his grip wasn’t loosening from my arm. I either walked or was dragged by him, so rather than pulling away I decided to walk.“Good, it isn’t so hard to be good, is it?” He smirked, staring down at me. “Why do I constantly have to teach you everything?”We walked up the stairs to his bedroom, he pushed the door open and pushed me inside, only letting go of my arm to close

Chapter 24

Danis povThe party in the backyard was Ryan’s idea of me getting distressed from what was happening. It wasn’t much of a party, more of us just hung around in his backyard, with a cooler Ryan had dragged from under his kitchen counter. The evening air was just perfect for this.We had been out here for about an hour.I had been quirky for most of it with Ryan doing the chit chat about what’s happening in school. “Man, you look like someone ran over your dog.” Ryan leaned back in his chair, taking a sip of his drink. “Except you don’t have a dog, so who is she?”I glance over.“Don’t.” Ryan pointed at me. “Don’t do that face where you pretend not to know what I’m talking about, I’ve known you since we were sixteen, you always look like that when you have a girl problem.“Fuck off, man, what do you know?” I snickered. “Coming from someone who has never held a woman’s hand.”Ryan burst out laughing. “Fuck oft and tell me what’s popping.”“Well, I didn’t really know.” I sighed, rubbing m

Chapter 25

Dani povThe neighbourhood was as quiet as I remembered, I stopped a few houses away to be on the safe side, I didn't want him to know what was going to hit him.Ryan and I both looked around the houses trying to figure out which one would likely be the one. Since this wasn’t yielding any positive results, I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and searched for Blake, seeing his photo uploaded in the media, in the background was a house that appeared to be his, looking around, it was only a few houses away. I recalled coming here while I was younger while we were still friends before that incident. We both stared at the building, the house was lit brightly, and giant music could be heard from inside.I was already walking towards the building when Ryan grabbed my arm. “Hey, what are you doing?” It turned to look at him. “Don’t tell me you plan on just walking in there like you own the place, I know a lot of things are going through your mind but if you go in there and swing blows, if he

Chapter 26

Dani’s POVMaria quickly pressed the gun in my hand. Then she tore the neckline of her dress in one pull and positioned my arm around her throat to make it look like I was strangling her.“What the hell are you doing?” I snarled, trying to take my hand off her neck but she kept holding me.“They’re here,” Maria smirked, looking up at me.The door at the top of the stairs burst open.“Police. Don’t move.” Three of them came down fast, hands on their weapons, flashlights cutting through the dim light and landing on us. The gun in my hand and Maria’s throat under my arm and the torn fabric of her dress and everything arranged exactly the way she wanted.“Drop the weapon. Now.”I dropped it.It hit the concrete floor and skidded and I raised both hands and said nothing because there was nothing to say that would change what they saw. Maria was already moving. She pulled away from me the moment the gun left my hand, stumbling forward with her hand at her throat, with teary eyes. She ran

Chapter 27

Wren’s povThe moment Blake’s father spoke, the entire room seemed to freeze.I stood between Ryan and the nearest officer, my pulse hammering so hard I could feel it in my teeth. Dani was still cuffed, hands locked behind his back, his eyes locked on me like I was the only thing keeping him steady.Blake’s mother stepped fully inside, her coat which I could tell was really expensive brushing the doorframe. Her gaze swept over everyone, Maria’s torn dress, the cloth pressed to Blake’s face, Dani in cuffs, and me, still wearing Ryan’s jacket.“What is going on here?” Blake’s father repeated. One of the officers cleared his throat. “Sir, we received a call about a possible robbery in progress. These two…” he nodded toward Ryan and Dani. “Entered the premises without authorization. We also have an accusation of attempted kidnapping involving the young woman.”“That’s a lie!” Ryan burst out before anyone could stop him. “Blake tried to kidnap Wren. He locked her upstairs and assaulted her

Chapter 28

Dani’s POVThe police light buzzed above my head. My wrists burned under the tight cuffs. Ryan stood like a statue beside me, jaw clenched. Then the double doors burst open. Elena marched in first. Our stepmom radiated authority in her tailored coat. Fredrick, her husband followed. I stared at them in shock. They actually showed up. After months of short texts and missed games, they walked into this chaos.“Officers, tell us exactly what happened,” Elena demanded. Her phone was already on speaker with their lawyer. The lead cop shifted. He eyed Blake’s parents slipping toward the exit. “Conflicting reports. Break-in. Assault. Possible kidnapping.”Dad’s gaze sharpened. “Private room. Now.”They led us into a stuffy side office. The table showed scars from years of tension.Officers spilled the details. The 911 call. Maria’s basement act. Blake’s lies. Wren’s defense. Elena scribbled notes fast. Dad grilled them on fingerprints and the locked room upstairs.I stayed silent. My mind is

Chapter 29

Wren’s POVI woke slowly, pulled from sleep by something warm and solid pressed against my back. For a hazy moment I stayed still. An arm wrapped tight around my waist, possessively. Then I felt it, something hard poking against me. My eyes snapped open.Memories flooded back fast. The basement. Blake’s grip. Maria’s trap. Police lights. Ryan in cuffs. Dani’s steady gaze across the station. The quiet car ride home with his step-parents. The movie we put on so I could calm down. I’d fallen asleep on the couch, head on his shoulder.I turned carefully. Slowly. Not wanting to wake him.My breath caught completely. Dani was shirtless. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm. Morning sun slipped through the curtains, lighting his skin. I didn’t remember him taking off his shirt. Honestly, I barely remembered twenty minutes into the movie. Just his warmth beside me. His hand was curling around mine. I hadn’t pulled away. Now here we were. Half-naked. Pressed close. His arm was still lock

Chapter 30

Wren’s POVI opened the bathroom door and stepped out, my damp hair falling softly around my shoulders. The steam followed me into the hallway for just a second before dissolving. The apartment smelled warm and alive. Fresh coffee. Something sweet is sizzling on the stove. Cinnamon, maybe. My stomach stirred despite itself.Ross stood at the stove, stirring a pan, humming something low under his breath. He glanced over his shoulder with a small smile.“Morning, figured we could all use a decent breakfast after last night.” He tipped his chin toward the stove. “Eggs and French toast sound good?”“Yeah,” I nodded. “Perfect.”My voice came out a little hoarse. I cleared my throat and looked around the room. The blankets from last night were folded neatly on the couch. Snack wrappers gone. Pillows fluffed and back in place. Not a single trace of the two of us tangled together in the dark.“Where’s Dani?”Ross nodded toward the sliding glass doors. “Out there working out. You know him. Can
