Chapter 1

WRENThe ceiling of my dorm room had a crack in it shaped like a question mark. I'd spent the last three weeks staring at it. I had been on the list for a room change for a week. I kept staring at my phone, hoping for good news."Wren." Ross snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Are you even listening to me?""Uhm…yes. Sure.""What did I just say?""Something about me complaining about housing."He pointed at me. "Exactly. Go complain. They have a whole office for this. That's literally what it's there for."I sat up on my bed and gestured broadly in the room. The radiator that only worked when it felt like it. The window let in more wind than light. The mysterious smell coming from the left corner vent that I had made peace with but should not have made peace with."Ross," I said. "I love you. But you are so aggressively unaware of how others live.""What does that mean?""It means complaining to the office doesn't work when you're not paying premium rates. You know what they do

Chapter 2

WRENI ran so fast I nearly broke the door down. The kitchen. I needed to get to the kitchen, find something to do with my hands, and blur my mind from the atrocity I had just watched…. Something I shouldn’t be watching or even have ever seen but the image had been buried in my mind and it wasn’t going to stop hunting me anytime soon.“God, what the hell did my eyes just see?” I shut my eyes for a second. “How could he not bother closing the door when he was going to do all that?”I found bread and some butter, I set them both on the counter and stood there gripping the edge of the kitchen island to support my wobbly legs.Cracking an egg into a hot pan, I pressed both palms on the counter and stared at them, taking deep breaths, trying to act like I didn’t just lock eyes with Dani Calloway through the small crack in the bedroom door while he was…I pushed myself off the counter and told myself firstly that what I had seen was nothing, people have their lives and anything they do isn'

Chapter 3

WREN “Damn you, Dani.” I turned around and literally sprinted to my room, my cheeks flustered. Did Dani just wink at me? I dropped my plate on the nightstand and plopped on my bed, staring at the ceiling. I slapped myself lightly wondering if this was a dream but from the slight sting I could tell it was all happening. “I’m not crazy, he really did it.” I ran my hand through my hair and but my lip. All through the night I couldn’t help but toss in bed, unable to bring myself to sleep. I spent the last hour staring at the ceiling, I turned to my side and then my back again, rearranged my pillow a thousand times because it never seemed to make me feel comfortable. Thinking about it for another hour I slowly fell asleep. My alarm went off at seven and I lay there on the bed for a moment with my eyes still closed. Pushing myself up, I strolled out of the room, seeing I had woken up before them both, I used the time to shower quietly and make an actual seasoned toast un

Chapter 4

WRENScreams and cheers erupted in the arena.Everything had happened within seconds, everyone had risen to their feet, both teams trying hard to stop them from throwing punches, I stood there with my scarf still wrapped.“I bet Blake feels inferior getting beat by Dani’s team, he really can’t accept he can’t stand toe to toe with the best.” I heard a guy snicker to his friend behind me.“He could have gone home to sulk up but he really had to let himself get into a fight… I know he's going to get beat up.” his friend cackled.Dani’s teammates held his shoulders, likewise Blake’s team. Looking past the cheering crowd, Dani’s eyes met mine.I didn’t know how, the arena was full and people were on all sides around me so how did our eyes lock? Why couldn’t I look away from him?Someone stood in front of him, cutting the little intense moment and blocking me from seeing him. I clenched my fists on my lap and shut my eyes to reduce the uneasy feeling. The officials arrived and sorted the s

Chapter 5

Wren’s pov“You’re drunk.” It was the only reasonable thing to say, the only thing that made sense given Dani was leaning close to me like that.“A little.” He admitted, like it was nothing, like he didn’t just ask if he could kiss me.“Then you should move… I’m your friend, not some random girl you could throw such words at.” I kept my voice calm even though my blood had literally run cold. “We should pretend this never happened.”He didn’t move.“Dani.” I pressed on longer. It was getting awkward by the minute. I stood up once he leaned away. “I’ll be leaving, goodnight, Dani.” My voice was almost shaky. “Get back home safely.”I turned to walk away when he grabbed me by my arm. Not hard but strong enough to stop me from walking away. He stood up, leaning closer to me but not the uncomfortable kind, his eyes were dark and plain.“Dani..:” I trailed quietly.“Are you really going to leave?” He asked, from the frown on his lips I could tell he had something else in mind to blurt out

Chapter 6

Wren’s povI have no idea which one of them had pushed me, but I knew they didn’t mean it… they were too furious to give a fuck about me trying to separate them.I lost my footing and slipped into the pool, the water splashed as soon as I got in, and the pool swallowed me whole as I kicked my feet. Anything to make me get air into my lungs but nothing was working, I was drowning. The cold water clung to me, bubbles puffed out of my mouth, muffling my scream attempt to get their attention. For a moment I was still… my body froze in shock, and I tried to think of something to help myself.Nothing.I tried to grab the water, kicked, and tried swabbing my hand, panic set in almost immediately, both of my hands were moving and working the way they were supposed to but the water kept getting into my mouth every time I tried to get some air.“Help.” It came out thin and waterlogged, I tried screaming louder again, swallowing more water, I went under for a second, trying to hoist myself back

Chapter 7

Wrens POV It was a hard satisfying slap, if I could slap him harder I would have but my body was still visibly shaking. Dani didn’t move or say a word, he stared at me quietly “It’s your damn fault, what the hell were you thinking?” I snarled, my voice shaking slightly. “Everything you ever do is for your own benefit and you know it.”The crowd had scattered thankfully so it was literally just us. Dani stood there with the imprints of my fingers on his cheeks. “What the fuck were you genuinely thinking tonight?”Nothing. “Fucking say something!” I threw my hands up in frustration but he remained calm as ever.“You’re upset.” He said quietly.“Obviously! Who wouldn’t be, in this kind of situation?” I stepped towards him, my arms wrapped around myself. My body is still dripping wet and cold. “You kissed me at a party where my boyfriend was present, you started a fight, I nearly drowned thanks to that and now Blake is gone all because of you and you go on to act like I don’t have a re

Chapter 8

Wren’s povI woke up with a headache that made my eyes ache, I stayed quietly, lying on my bed feeling nothing and struggling to recall what had happened the previous night when it hit me suddenly. From the kiss to the fight, the car ride and me blurting that shit right in front of Ross and hoping he didn’t hear me.I pressed my face to the pillow and screamed into it. Getting up finally and seeing my outfit had been changed into dry ones.Ross did this? My heart skipped. That pervert! I quickly cleaned up and dressed for school before storming out of my room and walking towards him.“Hey, you’re up, thought you were going to wait a little longer due to the hangover.” Ross waved at me, already set for school.“I’m good.” I smiled. “Did you change me last night?”He arched his brows in confusion at first and then lifted his brows like he just remembered the detail. “Oh yes, you wouldn’t sleep comfortably in those wet ones.” He shrugged. “Besides I didn’t look.”“Oh yeah?” I sighed, gra

Chapter 9

Wren’s POVHe walked past me like we didn’t know each other, I felt my heart sting but shrugged it off. It’s not like we would have anything reasonable to say.Lunch time finally came and Ross was already at our usual table with a tray of food he had clearly loaded for both of us. Something he was used to doing. He looked up the money I sat down and stared at my face like he could tell I was bothered.“You good?” He arched his brows already munching on his food. “You should eat, he said, pushing the tray toward me.“I’m not really…”“Wren, eat..” he insisted. Without holding back o nodded and began to eat. We remained silent for a few minutes, and could feel his eyes glance at me a few times, the noise from the other students drowned in the back of my mind as I was lost in thought.“Isn’t that your boyfriend?” He nudged his head to the person walking behind me. I turned my head to see who he was just walking into the cafeteria with the cheerleading captain, Maria, beside him. They wer

Chapter 10

Wren’s POV Blake sat with a smile on his face, patient and completely at ease with himself. I looked at him with my jaw wide open. Maria had frozen beside him the money she heard his words, even she must have thought it to be crazy.“Well?” Blake tilted his head. “I’m waiting.”“You’re out of your mind,” Ross spoke up, glaring at him with his hands curled into a punch. “You think she’s some white that would grace you like she doesn’t have a series of other options of better guys?"Ross was stealing from inside, I had seen him angry but this angry, he looked like he was going to tear him apart if things eventually escalated.“Excuse me?” Blake frowned, sizing him up with his eyes.“I said you’re out of your goddamn mind.” Russ stepped forward. “You want her to kneel? In the middle of the fucking cafeteria? With these people in it?”“It’s. Stern me and my girlfriend, Ross.”“Well she’s my friend and I ain’t letting that shit happen.” Ross still had a calm tone. “This isn’t a relationsh
