Chapter 21: The Cracks

Vanessa did not disappear. For two weeks after the gallery, I did not see her. I did not hear her name. I started to believe that Eli was right. She was in the past. She had said her piece and moved on.But then the messages started.Eli showed me the first one. We were sitting on his couch on a Wednesday night. His phone buzzed. He looked at the screen and his face went tight."What is it?" I asked. He turned the phone toward me.Unknown number: I miss you. Do you ever think about what we had?My stomach dropped. "Is that her?""It has to be. I blocked her old number years ago. She must have gotten a new one.""What are you going to do?"He typed something quickly. Do not contact me again. The response came within seconds. You used to be warmer than this. Your new girl is pretty. Very young though. Does she know about us? About the things we did?"She is trying to g

Chapter 22: The Confrontation

She came to my apartment on a Thursday.I was alone. Eli had a late studio session, working on his final project. I was on my couch with a book, trying to focus on post-colonial theory and not on the phone that kept buzzing with unknown numbers that Eli blocked one after another. The knock was firm. Three short raps.I thought it was a delivery. I opened the door without checking.Vanessa stood on my porch. She looked different than she had at the gallery. Less polished. Her hair was pulled back tight. Her clothes were dark and simple. Her eyes were sharp and awake."Hello, Nubia," she said.I tried to close the door. She put her hand on it. Not forcing. Just holding."I just want to talk," she said. "Five minutes. Then I will leave.""You should not be here.""I know. But I am. And I think you want to hear what I have to say."I did not want to hear what she had to say. But

Chapter 23: The Toll

The weeks that followed were quiet on the surface but turbulent underneath.Vanessa stopped. The messages ceased. The unknown numbers went silent. She did not come to my apartment again. She did not appear at the architecture studio. It was like she had never been there at all.But the damage was done.I did not check Eli's phone anymore. I had made that promise and I kept it. But the doubt was still there. It sat in the back of my mind like a stone I could not swallow and could not spit out. Every time he was late coming home, I wondered. Every time he was quiet for too long, I questioned.I hated myself for it. I hated Vanessa for planting the seed. But knowing where the doubt came from did not make it go away.Eli felt the change. I could see it in the way he looked at me. The careful way he chose his words. The way he hesitated before telling me things, as if he was afraid I would not believe him.We were both walki

Chapter 24: The Breaking Point

The semester ground on.December came with its cold winds and its gray skies and its endless demands. Final exams loomed. Final papers stacked up like mountains. I spent long hours at the library, my books spread around me, my coffee getting cold beside my laptop. Eli spent equally long hours at the architecture studio, his models and drawings consuming every spare moment. We still saw each other. We still made time. But it was different now. We were both tired. Both stretched thin. The ease we had felt at the cabin faded under the weight of real life. And still, Vanessa lingered at the edges. She had not contacted either of us since her visit to my apartment. But I felt her presence like a ghost. I saw her name in Eli's expressions when he thought I was not looking. I heard her warning in my head when I woke up at night and could not fall back asleep. The stress of everything was pressing down on both of us. And when people are

Chapter 25: The Spiral

The first week without Eli was the hardest.I went through the motions of my life. I woke up. I went to class. I came home. I studied. I slept. But everything felt gray and flat, like the color had been drained out of the world.I missed him in a thousand small ways. The sound of his voice in the morning. The weight of his arm across my waist at night. The way he said my name like it was something precious. The scratch of his pencil when he drew me.My phone was too quiet. No good morning texts. No random thoughts in the middle of the day. No pictures of sketches he was working on.I reached for my phone a hundred times a day to tell him something. A funny thing I saw on campus. A thought I had in class. A memory that made me smile. But each time I stopped myself. We were on a break. He had asked for space. I had to respect it.It was torture.Amina called me every day. Sometimes twice. She took me out for coffee. She d

Chapter 26: The Bottom

I did not leave my apartment for three days. I called in sick to my classes. I did not check my email. I did not answer my phone. I lay on my couch in my sweatpants and Eli's old hoodie, the one he had given me on the first night, and I stared at the ceiling. The D sat in my mind like a stone. Professor Harding's disappointed face. The email about my scholarship. My grandmother's proud voice calling me her little professor. All of it swirled together into a fog I could not escape. I had failed. Not just a class. Not just a paper. I had failed at the one thing I was supposed to be good at. The one thing that had always defined me. I was the smart one. The focused one. The girl with the plan. And now the plan was in ruins. On the second day, Amina banged on my door. "I know you are in there," she shouted through the wood. "Open the door or I will break it down." I o

Chapter 27: The Review

The day of Eli's final review, I could barely sit still.I had two classes that morning. I went to both of them. I took notes that I did not remember writing. I answered a question in my seminar and the professor nodded, so I must have said something right. But my mind was across campus, in the architecture building, where Eli was standing in front of a panel of professors and defending months of work.He had not texted me since the night before. Tomorrow at ten. I am terrified. You will be amazing, I wrote back. I believe in you.I wish you could be there. So do I. But this is your moment. You have to do it alone.I did not go to the review. He had not asked me to, and I knew it was something he needed to face without me. This was between him and his work. I understood that. But it did not make the waiting easier. At noon, my phone buzzed. It is done. I passed. Barely, but I passed.I let out

Chapter 28: Mississippi

We drove to Mississippi in the last week of January. The semester had not started yet. We had one final week of freedom before classes began again. Eli had suggested the trip and I had agreed before he finished his sentence. I wanted my grandmother to meet him. I wanted him to see where I came from. The drive took eight hours. We left before dawn, the sky still dark, the roads empty. Eli drove the first shift while I slept in the passenger seat, my head against the window. Then I drove while he dozed. We stopped at a gas station for snacks and bad coffee. We listened to music and talked about nothing and everything. As we crossed the state line into Mississippi, the landscape changed. The hills flattened out. The trees became sparser. The sky opened up, big and blue and endless. I felt something shift in my chest. Home. No matter how long I lived in the city, this land was in my blood."You are smiling," Eli said."I am happy."

Chapter 29: The New Semester

We came back from Mississippi stronger than we had ever been. The trip had done something to us. It had sealed a crack I did not even know was still open. Seeing Eli with my grandmother, watching him sit in her church and eat her food and let her pinch his cheek like he was already family, it made me believe things I had only hoped before. This was real. This was lasting. This was the thing I had been waiting for my whole life. The spring semester started in the first week of February. The campus was still cold and gray, but there were hints of change in the air. The days were getting longer. The snow was melting in patches. The trees were still bare but you could feel them waiting, holding their breath for spring.I registered for four classes. The standard load. Post colonial literature. African diaspora studies. Feminist theory. And an independent study with Professor Harding, who had agreed to supervise my thesis research despite my

Chapter 30: The Gallery

Spring came slowly that year.March arrived with gray skies and cold rain, but by the middle of the month the world began to soften. The trees put out small green buds. The grass grew greener. The air smelled like wet earth and the promise of flowers.Eli and I fell into a rhythm with the house. Every Saturday we drove out to the land. He worked on the structure with his father, who came most weekends now. David Chen and I had grown more comfortable with each other since that first dinner. He was still blunt and quiet, but he smiled more when I was around. He taught me how to measure and cut wood. He showed me how to use a level. He called me Nubia instead of just you."Your grandmother would be proud," he said one Saturday as I helped him carry lumber. "A scholar who knows how to use a hammer.""My grandmother would say a woman should know how to do everything.""Smart woman."By April, the house had walls. The roof wa
