Chapter 31: Graduation

Graduation day came on a bright Sunday in late May.The campus was transformed. White tents covered the main lawn. Folding chairs in long rows faced a stage draped in the university colors, deep blue and gold. Families milled around, mothers in dresses and fathers in suits and grandmothers holding programs like sacred texts. Students in black gowns and square caps moved through the crowd like a flock of dark birds.I wore my gown over a simple white dress. My cap sat squarely on my head, the tassel hanging on the right side. After the ceremony, I would move it to the left. A small gesture that meant everything.Eli wore his gown too. He was somewhere on the other side of the lawn with the architecture students. I had not seen him since the morning. We had kissed at my door before going our separate ways to meet our families. My mother arrived first. She was wearing a green dress and heels she never wore. She had taken the bus a

Chapter 32: The Bus Stop

The next morning we walked to the bus stop. It was a warm day, the first truly warm day of the year. The sun was out. The trees were fully green now. Students walked across campus in shorts and sandals, their faces tilted toward the sky. Summer was coming. We held hands as we walked. Neither of us spoke. We did not need to. The silence between us was comfortable, full of everything we had already said and everything we did not need to say. The bench was exactly where it had always been. Same metal slats. Same peeling paint. Same flickering streetlamp overhead, though it was off now in the daylight. The schedule was still posted on the pole, though the times had changed. Someone had stuck gum under the armrest. Someone had scratched their initials into the back. Small marks of other lives, other waits, other stories that had nothing to do with us. We sat down. Me on the right. Him on the left. The way it had alway

Chapter 33: The House on the Hill

June came and the house was almost finished. We drove out every weekend. Sometimes David joined us. Sometimes we went alone. The walls were painted. The floors were laid. The kitchen had counters and a sink and a stove that actually worked. The bedroom had a window that faced the pond, just as Eli had promised. But there was still work to do. The porch needed to be finished. The studio needed shelves. The study needed a desk. Small things. Things we could do together. On a hot Saturday in the middle of June, we drove out with a truck full of supplies. Paint cans. Brushes. A new light fixture for the bedroom. The air was thick and humid. The kind of heat that made your clothes stick to your skin. "We should swim," Eli said. "Swim where?" "The pond. It is clean. I checked." I looked at the pond. It was small but clear. The water was dark green and still. Dragonflies

Chapter 34: The Storm

July brought thunderstorms. They rolled in every afternoon, dark clouds piling up on the horizon, the air turning heavy and thick. The thunder cracked loud enough to shake the windows. The rain came down in sheets, flooding the streets and turning the gutters into rivers. One Saturday we were at the house when a storm hit. We had come out early to finish the porch railing. The sky was blue when we arrived. By noon, clouds had gathered. By one o'clock, the wind was whipping the trees and the first drops were falling. "We should go inside," Eli said. We ran to the house as the sky opened up. The rain came down so hard we could barely see the pond. The thunder rolled overhead. "We are stuck here," I said. "Is that a bad thing?" "No. It is a very good thing." The house was mostly fini

Chapter 35: The Thesis

August was the hottest month I could remember. The air was thick and heavy. The grass turned brown. The pond shrank back from its banks. We worked on the house in the early mornings and late evenings, avoiding the brutal midday sun. The porch was finished. The studio had shelves. My study had a desk by the window, just as Eli had promised. But I could not spend all my time at the house. I had a thesis to finish. Professor Harding had been patient with me all summer. I had driven to three small towns across the state, interviewing elderly Black women about their lives. Women who had marched in the Civil Rights Movement. Women who had picked cotton as children. Women who had raised families on nothing but faith and determination. Their stories filled hours of tape. I transcribed them at my desk, the voices of these women filling my small apartment. Their words were powerful. Their memories were sharp. I felt the we

Chapter 36: The Move

September came with a cool breeze and the first hint of autumn. The house was finished. After months of weekends and late nights, painting and hammering and measuring and building, it was done. The porch had a swing. The studio had good northern light. The study had a desk by the window, just as Eli had promised, with a view of the pond.We packed my apartment in a single weekend. My books went into boxes. My clothes went into suitcases. My grandmother's quilt was folded carefully and placed on the front seat of the car, where it would not get crushed.Amina came to help. She arrived with coffee and doughnuts and a roll of packing tape."I cannot believe you are leaving me," she said."I am not leaving you. I am moving an hour away.""An hour is far.""You will visit. There is a guest room.""A guest room. Look at you, all grown up with a guest room."We packed the kitchen in the morning. The

Chapter 37: The Proposal

October came full circle. It had been exactly one year since the night at the bus stop. One year since the cold wind and the delayed bus and the sketchbook. One year since Pencil Boy became Eli and everything changed.I did not think about the date when I woke up that morning. I was too busy. My thesis revisions were due in a week. Professor Harding had given me detailed notes and I was working through them methodically. The end was in sight.Eli was quiet at breakfast. He made pancakes and coffee and kept looking at me with an expression I could not read."Are you okay?" I asked."I am fine. Just thinking.""About what?""Nothing important. What are you doing tonight?""Tonight? Working on revisions. Why?""I thought we could go for a walk. To the bus stop.""The bus stop? That is an hour away.""I know. But I want to see it. It has been a year."I set down my fork.

Chapter 38: The Kiss

My grandmother fell ill in the first week of November. My mother called on a Tuesday morning. Her voice was tight and controlled, the way it got when she was trying not to scare me."She is in the hospital. Pneumonia. The doctors say she is stable but she is asking for you."I packed a bag in ten minutes. Eli stood in the doorway of our bedroom, watching me throw clothes into a suitcase. His face was worried. His hands were shoved in his pockets."I am coming with you," he said."No. You have your presentation next week. The firm is sending people. You cannot miss it.""I do not care about the presentation.""I care. Your career matters. I will only be gone a few days. She will be fine."He did not look convinced. He pulled me against him, his hands gripping my hips. "I hate when you leave.""I will be back before you know it."He kissed me hard. Not a goodbye kiss. A claiming kiss. H

Chapter 39: The Fall

I stayed at Amina's apartment for three days.I did not answer Eli's calls. I did not read his texts beyond the first words. I'm sorry. Please come home. I love you. I deleted them. I was not ready. I was not sure I would ever be ready.Amina let me sleep on her couch. She made me tea and toast and did not push. She knew me. She knew I had to process this alone before I could talk about it.On the second day, I finally broke. I was sitting on her couch, staring at the wall, when the tears came. Not gentle tears. Hard, ugly sobs that tore through my chest."He kissed her back," I said. "He promised me everything and he kissed her back.""I know, honey." Amina sat beside me, her hand on my back."I trusted him. After everything. After the break. After all the work we did. I finally believed he would never hurt me. And the second I leave, the second things get hard, he lets her in.""I know.""W

Chapter 40: The Diner

---I got to the diner first. That was deliberate. I wanted to be sitting when he walked in. I wanted to see his face before he saw mine. I wanted the control. The waitress recognized me. She brought coffee without asking."You are alone tonight," she said."He is coming."She nodded. She did not ask more questions. Good.I sat in our booth. The same one. Red plastic seats. Sticky table. The jukebox played something old and sad. I wrapped my hands around the coffee cup and waited. He walked in at seven exactly. He had dressed carefully. Dark shirt. Clean jeans. His hair was combed. He had shaved. He looked thinner than before. Tired. But his eyes found me immediately and something in them flickered. Hope. Fear. Love. All of it.He slid into the booth across from me. He did not try to touch me."Thank you for coming," he said."I said I would.""I know.
