ALICE The bedroom door rattled before I could move.I turned, tightening the knot of my robe. A sudden wave of nausea hit my stomach, heavy and familiar. I let out a slow breath, waiting for it to pass, before walking to the door and pulling it open.Uncle Bradford stood in the hallway. He had taken off his jacket, his white shirt immaculate against the dim light of the corridor. The same polite smile sat on his face.“Uncle Bradford,” I said. “It is past midnight.”“I know the hour is late, Alice,” he said, his voice quiet. “I wanted to check on you.
