Chapter 31

Oracle’s POVThe Gutters continued to occupy my thoughts.I have never seen so much suffering before. I remembered a time when it used to be as Sorrel described.A place where dreams were achieved. The beacon of dreams for werewolves around the mountain. What went wrong?Mel walked in, determination in her eyes. “Something is terribly wrong, Oracle,” she said, pacing closing the door behind her.“Something is terribly wrong and I do not know what.”I nodded. “I know that.”She began pacing, walking back and forth before me. She stopped suddenly and lifted her head.“What have you been up to?”I stayed quiet, waiting for her to continue. Maximus had told me something was wrong, and he had charged me with the responsibility of uncovering it.As long as I was concerned, the task was left to me, I did not want to endanger the Luminaries. “You are onto something, and I want in.”That was so Mel, she was the top of her rank amongst her fellow luminaries and therefore very reckless. She wa

Chapter 32

Sorrel’s POVNadia was against it. Against the idea. Every step that I took closer to his study, she urged me to turn back, tried to make me turn by herself, but I kept going. Determination and fear coursed rapidly through me.An odd mix.My body was hot from false bravery, my life hanging on a thread.I stopped before his study, heart in my throat, pulse beating wildly like a mad wolf. I stood. Stood. Stood. And then I let out a breath and rapped on the door. There was no answer.I rapped again, this time harder and I heard him call out angrily. “Who’s there?”I swallowed, my throat hurting.“Luna Sorrel, Alpha.” *Sorrel it’s not too late, turn back. Turn back now!*My chest beat in rhythm to Nadia’s warning and my mind supplied me with previous incidents that followed after I ignored her warning in the past.I should turn back, I knew that. No good would come from making a deal with the devil. But the devil was the only hope I had.“Alpha?” I called when he didn’t say anything.“

Chapter 33

Sorrel’s POV Nathaniel broke the kiss then, smirking. His eyes glistened with unforeseen joy and I felt sick to my stomach.I listened, horrified as the sound of the footsteps drew closer—Kaine’s footsteps. My heart thumped in rhythm with the steps, firm and loud.Nathaniel’s side lifted into a grin, light dancing in his eyes as he watched with anticipation. No doubt deriving some sort of joy from this sick performance.“What do you think dear brother is going to do?” Nathaniel sang, his voice slithering down my body like a snake.“He’s particularly fond of you.” Nathaniel faced me now. “Why is that?”A lump, hot and hard, formed in my throat. I was conscious of his words and aware of his eyes watching my features intently.“He is not.”“Are you saying I’m lying?”If I agreed it would only make him do all the sick things he had in store for me. If I declined he would know that I was trying to protect Kaine.“He cares for the crown and heir.”“Mmm,” he hummed. “How loyal, isn’t he?” T

Chapter 34

Sorrel’s POVI pushed up and lay on one side on the bed, staring as Nathaniel wore his clothes. “The sooner you are with child, the better,” he said, slipping on his garment. “You need to produce an heir for the pack soon.”“That is your job, that is your duty, if you cannot do that, you are useless.”I remained still as though the room was holding its breath and waiting for him to say what I needed to hear. His aid.Child or no child, I needed the aidI wanted him to say it and get out so that I could shower. I could scrub him from my skin but he remained and he said nothing till I was forced to say,“The aid, Alpha Nathaniel.”“Right.” He faced me with a smile, a sickening smile that made my skin crawl.I was aware of how powerless I was. In a world where those with powers thrived, I was beneath the feet of my oppressors.Beneath Nathaniel, and I knew that he could take whatever he wanted without paying for it; he could do as he pleased, and there would be nothing to be done about

Chapter 35

Sorrel’s POVI stood away from Kaine in the hallway, heart thumping in my chest. I hadn’t seen him for three days since our last encounter on the balcony with Nathaniel. This was our first meeting since then and he was staring at me differently. The humidity in the hallway intensified, thickening to a choking level. His eyes were dancing between silver and his usual hazel green eyes.I took a step forward, and he did as well. I was holding my breath, and it felt like he was holding his, too.His eyes tracked me slowly, then they widened a little, as if he was only seeing me just now.Time elapsed beside us and it suddenly felt like our first time seeing each other again, like the first time our mate bond snapped into place. When he walked past me, all my senses were filled with an immense energy that left me dry and longing…“Kaine,” I called as we passed each other. He came to an abrupt stop with shoulders squared.“Look at me.”He turned but didn’t look at me.“Are you alright?”Hi

Chapter 36

Abigeal’s POVI sat at the edge of the bed as my sick brother wore his clothes. I wish I knew why he did what he did, but I had no clue.He just dragged me into this room and forced himself on me whenever he wanted. Some unseen force held me down every time.I remembered a time before this, when our sweet parents were still alive and Kaine was my brother. Now when I thought back to those times it felt as though it was merely a dream.“Stop staring at me like that, sister.”“Why?” Was all I got out, “I’m your sister.” Tears filled my eyes even as my throat became filled with lumps. He only stared at me with a smile. “Some things are not meant for your ears, sister.”I became hot with anger. “Your time will come to an end.”“And how will that happen, sister?” He mused, finding all this funny. “Do you know what power is? Power is me, Abby.”I glared at him, letting him see all my hate. “Kaine will stop you.”That must have been the funniest thing to him because he burst out laughing lik

Chapter 37

Sorrel’s POVI sat in the infirmary with my unconscious mother, she came yesterday and since then she had been unconscious. The physicians attended to her, even Aaron came in. They’ve done the necessary thing and he said she was alright.Slowly recovering, she was down with a bad fever that ran to her head, and it affected her wolf as well.I took her hand and pressed a kiss on it. “Please wake up,” I muttered, “please, I need you. I cannot do it on my own.”The door to our room opened and in came Kaine. He was dressed casually, as casually as it went for him.But that wasn’t what brought a smile to my face, it was his presence. I tried not to read too much meaning into his presence, he could have possibly come because he was already in tht infirmary, but my stupid heart read meaning into it.“Kaine,” I said and shifted on the metal chair. “What are you doing here?”He stopped, looked around the room, and then at me as if he didn’t know how he got here.“You….” His eyes dropped to me

Chapter 38

Sorrel’s POVMy breath caught in my throat and I stared wide-eyed at him.I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t imagine he said that out loud.Looking at him, I noticed how he watched me with slightly furrowed brows and a hint of a frown. And I understood that he wasn’t telling me this to flutter me or with any intention in mind, he was simply communicating his observations of his feelings.I smiled and squeezed his hand. “Don’t worry Kaine, it will get better.”“I do not believe it will. The pain is unbearable.”“Wh—“A groan made my eyes snap to my mother. “Mother! Mother!” I hurried over to her, letting go of Kaine’s hand. She blinked, looking around her surroundings, her Luna instinct kicking in then she returned her gaze to me. But it was as if she wasn’t staring at me, simply staring beyond.“Mother,” I crawled forward, using my hands to caress her cheeks. “So—Sorrel?” She squinted.“Yes, yes it’s me, mother.” I threw my arms over her and pulled her into a hug.A strained groan made

Chapter 39

Sorrel’s POVMy heart beat like a war drum, blood whooshing violently in my ears as we all stared at him—shocked to the bones.Kaine did as well. He was staring at his outstretched hand, finding it hard to believe what he was about to do.My eyes crept from his outstretched hand, hovering just above my thighs to his eyes. They were wide with terror as we locked eyes. His throat worked; he swallowed, and then the sound of his chair scraping back on the floor revealed him standing. His hands were balled into fists by his side. He stood. A minute. Followed by another. Time ticked by and he just stood in one spot.Slowly, his head lifted and they first met my eyes, before he curtsied. “It is wonderful to have you in the pack, Luna Sorrel will really need your presence,” he said to my mother.“Stay and get properly treated.”His tone was restrained, taut and flat and he would not meet my eyes.“I will be on my way now,” he bowed and with that he whirled, storming out of the room like ghos

Chapter 40

Abigeal’s POVLuna Sorrel looked at me like I’d grown two horns on my head.“Are you insane?” She demanded, walking over to me. “You cannot go around saying things like that!”“Why not!” I snapped. “He….” I heaved, cutting myself off.“He has been abusing me for goddess knows how long and you think it is brass to say that I want to kill him?”She was quiet for a moment, her green eyes and white brows furrowed.I know she was also a victim of his even if she would never say that out loud, never own up to it.I had no clue what she was getting from hiding it from me, but I knew as well.“Tell me,” she took my arms. “What's the problem? Why the sudden change of heart?”“I realized I have never considered it, right from when it started. I thought I would be too small and weak for him.”She went silent, her brain picking up everything I just said and realigning, restructuring, and analyzing it.“If…” she lifted her head, eyes filled with fear and determination. “If you are to do this, you
