The Lockdown

CHAPTER 11.SALVATORE POVThe prisoner escaped. Three words. That was all it took for the entire fortress to feel poisoned.I slid the magazine into the gun with a sharp click while Lena stood near the windows watching me carefully. Rain hammered against the glass behind her, silver lightning flashing across the dark ocean below the cliffs. She looked afraid. But not of the gun, Of me.That should've satisfied something inside me. Instead, it irritated me."Stay in your room tonight," I ordered. Her chin lifted immediately. "You don't get to command me every second."My jaw tightened. Even now. Even with danger crawling through my house like a disease, she still challenged me.Most people folded under pressure. Lena pushed harder."You think this is a game?" I asked quietly."No," she shot back. "I think you enjoy acting like everyone belongs to you."Something dark moved low in my chest. Possession. Violent and immediate.I stepped closer slowly. "You're still breathing because I dec

The Alarm

CHAPTER 12LENA POVThe alarms sounded like screams, my heart slammed hard against my ribs while red emergency lights flooded the room again. For one disoriented second, Salvatore still stood close enough for me to feel his warmth against my skin.Too close. His hand was still wrapped around mine. And somehow that terrified me more than the gunshot downstairs. The softness from moments ago vanished instantly from his face. Coldness replaced it so fast it felt unreal. Like I imagined the crack in his control. Like I imagined the way his breathing changed when I touched his scar.He released my hand slowly before turning toward the room door."Stay here."The command snapped through the room sharply. I stared at him in disbelief."Absolutely not."His jaw tightened immediately. "Lena—""You don't get to lock me in rooms every time something happens."Another gunshot echoed somewhere below us. Closer this time. My stomach twisted hard.Salvatore reached inside his jacket and pulled out a

Feel Human

CHAPTER 13SALVATORE POVDarkness swallowed the fortress. One second the room glowed gold from the fireplace. The next, nothing. No light. No sound except the ocean crashing violently outside the cliffs.Brutus growled again. Low. Deadly.Every instinct inside me sharpened instantly. I stood from the chair so fast the whiskey glass tipped sideways onto the floor."Stay behind me," I ordered.Lena crossed her arms immediately even in the dark. "You know, normal people say thank you when someone worries about them."Despite everything happening, irritation flickered through me. Unbelievable. The woman argued with me during possible attacks.A soft emergency light flickered alive near the hallway ceiling, bathing the room in dim red shadows. Enough for me to see her face again. Enough to see the stubborn tilt of her chin. And enough to notice fear hiding beneath it.Not fear for herself. For Matteo. Always Matteo first. The kid slept through almost anything now. Trauma did that to childr

The Line We Cross

CHAPTER 14LENA POVThe warmth vanished from the room. Just like that. One second, Matteo was making jokes about Salvatore getting injured too often. Next, Salvatore looked exactly like the man who had stormed my wedding with blood on his hands.Cold. Controlled. Untouchable.I hated how quickly I noticed the difference. And I hated even more that part of me preferred the version that almost smiled.Charlie stood near the door. "The boat disappeared before we could identify who was on it," he said.Salvatore nodded once. "Keep people alert."Charlie glanced between us briefly. His eyes lingered on the bandages around Salvatore's shoulder. Then on me.Something knowing flashed across his face. Not judgment. Awareness.Like he could see something neither of us wanted to admit."Anything else?" Salvatore asked."No.""Then leave."Charlie left without another word. The door clicked shut behind him.Silence settled over the room againI stood slowly from where I had been kneeling. The mom

The Photograph

CHAPTER 15SALVATORE POVSweat trickled down my neck despite the cold night air.. I hadn't felt it in years. Not real fear. Not the kind that tightened around your ribs and refused to let go.But as I stared at the letter in my hand, something cold settled deep inside my chest.Lena noticed. Of course she did. She noticed everything."What is it?" she asked quietly.I folded the paper before she could see it. "Nothing."Her eyes narrowed immediately. A normal person would've accepted the answer.Lena never did."You're lying."The guard beside the door suddenly looked very interested in the floor. Smart man.I dismissed him with a glance. The moment the door shut, silence returned. Heavy. Watchful. Dangerous."Lena.""Salvatore."The way she repeated my name sounded like a challenge. I almost respected it. Almost."What does the letter say?""Something that doesn't concern you."The answer came too fast. Too sharp. She noticed that too."It concerns me if it's the reason you suddenly

The Kindness Between Monsters

CHAPTER 16 LENA POVI couldn't sleep. Not after the look on Salvatore's face, and definitely not after that letter and the fear that had come with it.Because that was what I'd witnessed tonight. Real fear. The kind that tightened around a person's chest and made powerful men look suddenly human. The kind that made monsters look vulnerable for just a moment.I lay awake staring at the ceiling long after midnight, replaying everything over and over again in my head. The letter. The photograph slipping out from inside the envelope. The way his entire expression had changed so completely when he read what was written there.Salvatore Romano was many things if you asked anyone in this fortress. Cold. Dangerous. Controlling. But afraid? I'd never seen that before tonight, and I couldn't stop thinking about it now.The fortress was quiet except for the distant sound of waves crashing against the cliffs below. Beside me, Matteo slept peacefully, which meant at least one of us could rest.I

The Traitor Inside

CHAPTER 17 SALVATORE POVI sat at the head of the conference table, staring down at the five soldiers standing across from me in a line."Who spoke?"Silence answered me. The kind of silence that made grown men sweat through their shirts, the kind that hung in the air like a physical thing.Nobody moved. Nobody breathed too loudly. Good. Fear was healthy. Fear keeps people honest. Usually.Unfortunately, someone inside my empire had forgotten that basic truth. My fingers tapped once against the wooden table. Slow. Controlled. Deadly."I'll ask again," I said, keeping my voice level and even.My voice remained calm, which was exactly when people became nervous. Not when I shouted. Not when I threatened. When I sounded calm.Because everyone knew what happened after the calm disappeared."Who spoke to Caruso?"The men exchanged quick glances with each other. Tiny ones. Barely noticeable.I noticed anyway. I noticed everything. That was the problem with power. The more power you gained,

The Escape Attempt

CHAPTER 18LENA POVI was passing by the kitchen when I heard the two soldiers talking, and the words they spoke made my entire body go stiff."Caruso's men were seen near the southern waters."The words weren't meant for me. I heard them anyway. The two soldiers were standing just outside the kitchen when I passed by, and the moment they noticed me, their conversation stopped abruptly.Too late. My pulse had already started racing wildly.Caruso. Dante Caruso. The man I was supposed to marry. The man who had smiled while my brothers controlled every part of my life. The man connected to more secrets than anyone wanted to admit. If his men were near the island, everything was about to change. Everything.I continued walking like I hadn't heard anything. Like I wasn't listening intently to every word. Like my entire body wasn't suddenly filled with restless energy. But the moment I turned the corner, my feet moved faster. Because one thought kept repeating inside my head over and over

Behind Locked Doors

CHAPTER 19 SALVATORE POVI should have let her go. Just long enough for her to learn her lesson about running toward the docks during a storm.Instead, I was standing in my bedroom watching the most stubborn woman I'd ever met pace across my floor like an angry cat who'd been caged."You can't be serious," she said, her voice sharp.I leaned against the door and crossed my arms. "I am.""This is insane."I almost laughed. Almost. Because if anyone had told me a month ago that I'd be locking a woman inside my personal bedroom for her own protection, I would've questioned their sanity.Yet here we were. That was exactly what was happening.Lena stopped pacing and glared at me with an intensity that would've intimidated most men.Unfortunately for her, I wasn't most men."You tried to escape."Her eyes flashed with anger. "You kidnapped me.""There it is.""The argument you use every time you lack a better one."Her mouth fell open. For a second she looked genuinely offended. Then her

The Nightmare

CHAPTER 20 LENA POVThe storm got worse sometime during the night, and rain hammered against the fortress windows with such violence it sounded like the glass might shatter.Thunder rolled across the ocean like distant explosions rippling across the water.I woke slowly, confused for a moment about where I was or how I'd gotten here. Then reality returned, sharp and undeniable. I'm in Salvatore's room, his bed and prison. My gaze drifted toward the couch positioned near the fireplace. The room was dark except for the occasional flash of lightning that illuminated everything in brief, sharp bursts.Salvatore was asleep. At least I thought he was sleeping. The sight felt strange. Almost impossible. Men like Salvatore Romano weren't supposed to sleep. They were supposed to stalk through shadows and terrify entire countries.Instead, he lay half-covered by a blanket while exhaustion dragged at his features and made him look almost human. For a moment, he looked younger. Less dangerous.
