Chapter 121

KAEL"Yes," the man repeated, though he hesitated before saying it, glancing back slightly, as if to confirm whether he still had the backing of the crowd behind him, or whether that backing would be enough to see this through.I did not intend to sit here and argue with them. Instead, I explained plainly. "Alpha Grayson is currently occupied with the fallout from the Calloway family, and has therefore delegated authority to those he deemed necessary, to preemptively apply order wherever it was needed most urgently."They still looked hungry for more, so I did not hold back, reinforcing the point further."So it goes without saying that I am one of those given direct authority to interfere with whatever cycle I believe is currently looming, so the source of it can be cut off before it spreads any further.” I said, but it still didn’t seem satisfactory.“If this does not serve as sufficient explanation to end whatever you are planning, understand that I already hold a mountain of evide

Chapter 122

KAELThey had yielded, exactly as I expected they would once the choice narrowed down to power already standing in front of them, or power still miles out of reach. It rarely takes long for fear to outweigh ambition, once the two are finally placed side by side.I did not waste the momentum. Within that same week, I sought out and intercepted some of the foreign representatives who had been quietly funneling resources into the pack's smaller, more desperate families, the very channel every one of these eruptions had been feeding from since the beginning."It seems you have caught on well," one of them said, unbothered, once I stood across from him directly. They had changed entry routes thinking it would throw me off. Now, they were evidently disappointed. "Yes," I said. "And if you consider my presence here a courtesy, understand it will not remain one for long. I already hold sufficient grounds to apprehend, and to confiscate, whatever assets your operation still has moving throug

Chapter 123

KAELI had never imagined that a family meeting would feel this incomplete without the one person it was meant to include.Alpha Grayson had called us to the estate, and I had arrived expecting the weight of the political situation to be the heaviest thing in the room. Instead, what sat heaviest was the empty chair at the table. No one pointed at it, no one needed to.Luna Nova's eyes had been on it from the moment we settled, moving between Grayson and I with a quiet, concentrated intensity that required no words to communicate exactly what she was thinking.Amina sat close to Nova, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her posture still, though the worry she carried was not something she had managed to fully conceal behind it."I still do not understand it," Nova said finally, her eyes no longer drifting between us. They had landed, and they were not moving. "She is not here, and neither of you is faulting the other. For the longest time she has been working alongside both of you. You

Chapter 124

KAELThe building had long since stopped resembling an office. What used to be the space where I reviewed files alone now held a full map spread across the table, top tier figures gathered around it, Sir. Darwin among them, along with other selected influential figures I had first brought in during the week Ava and I had gone away, and a handful of others whose loyalty had already been tested and confirmed untouched by whatever corruption had been spreading through the rest of the pack.Together, we were assessing the entire situation as one unit."This is precarious," one of them said, stabbing a section of the map with his finger. "Without an exit strategy, the protest is inevitable. The resources that have already been pumped into this section alone are more than enough to carry them from here to their intended target.""I have already cut off sources here, and here," I said, gesturing to two separate points on the map, the same channels I had shut down when I stopped the foreign

Chapter 125

KAEL"By the information provided and the evidence presented before this council," the presiding elder began, "and in accordance with the jurisdiction vested in this body, the Calloway family coalition is hereby found in violation of multiple statutes governing pack alliance, resource distribution, and foreign dealing. The verdict of this council is dissolution. Effective immediately, the Calloway coalition is revoked in full."All the elders raised their hammers in unison. The first hammer came down. Then the second. Then the third, fourth, and fifth, each one landing separately, each one carrying its own weight on the wood, the sound building and then settling into the kind of stillness that does not invite argument.I watched Calloway from where I stood. His face did not crumble into fear. Instead his internal tremors caused an eye brow of his to twitch at irregular intervals while he seemed to have stopped breathing for the moment. It was Lucas who moved first. He leaned close to

Chapter 126

KAEL"It's been done."The report came in before my attention had left the papers in front of me. Victor's expression seemed more optimistic than the last time, his tone carried the kind of controlled relief that only surfaces when something you were not entirely certain would work actually does.“The blockades were already in place for containment, the pack guards had been deployed to the pack square for push backs and they positioned themselves at every channel the protest had been mapped to move through.” Victor said, placing the file beside the one I had been looking at. “This set up is good,” I admitted. “I believe so,” Victor replied, but I read the second layer of what he implied. “Rerouting it had been the first objective. Now, containing the crowd without triggering a second wave of aggression follows,” I said, with two of my fingers raised, “But, our ultimate priority is turning the atmosphere into one where a public speech would make a peaceful disperse possible.”“Tha

Chapter 127

AVAI did not think much when I saw Kael coming for me through the crowd.Their murmurs increased as he moved closer, creating his own path from the podium. The thought of moving crossed my mind initially, but now, I just stood grounded in my spot as I saw him a few feet away.Kael reached me but then he did not move immediately. Neither did I. We just stayed there for a moment, the noise and the bodies between us not quite managing to reach where we were both standing inside that look. Then he snapped out of it.He reached for my wrist faster than the crowd expected which caused a collective gasp for the eyes that saw it.Before I could say anything, he was already moving, pulling me toward the left side of the square with a purpose that did not leave room for discussion."I need two men on me," he said to no one I could see, and two of the guards materialized almost instantly, falling into step just slightly behind us, matching our pace without crowding it.I kept up with him withou

Chapter 128

AVA"Just enough," I said, and that was not a satisfying answer for Kael.He did not push it. But I did not feel compelled to keep talking simply because he had not pushed either. I continued anyway, entirely on my own accord."I found out just enough to understand everything," I said. "To know what I need to do with it. And to know how to compartmentalize what I am still feeling about it." The light in Kael's eyes at that seemed different somehow, new in a way I had not seen from him before."I would not claim to understand you fully, Ava," he said. "But I feel like anything less than what you just gave me is not going to be enough.""Yes," I admitted. We were not silent again after that, though it was not dead air between us either. Instead, it filled itself with the murmured arguments and shifting activity of the crowd still moving beyond the alcove walls."Forty five minutes," I said, keeping track of the time without needing to check a watch, which seemed to catch Kael off guard

Chapter 129

AVA"Ava, I'm impressed. Really."I hadn't realized how long it had been since his voice had moved through me like that. Not the political version of his voice, not the one that addressed crowds and guards and elders with that particular weight behind it with the pressure that accompanied it. No. This quiet reverb made me want to play dumb, as if I had not heard it the first time so he would repeat what he said.My wolf clawed up through my chest so hard it almost felt cloggy to breathe. The headaches I had been numbing for days pressed back against the inside of my skull like they had been waiting for permission to return.Every reaction I had been managing in solitude decided, in that single moment, that it had been patient long enough. But I had not come back to be undone by a sentence. That was the difference now. All of it was still there, every reaction, every pull, every ache that his proximity seemed specifically designed to worsen. But I had spent enough time alone with mys

Chapter 130

AVAChange was the first thing that came to mind when I stepped inside."Different," I said, not quite to anyone, but it was the first word that came to mind which I could not keep totally inside. I had not expected father's official matters to overflow into the living room, but with everything that had been unfolding in the pack there was evidently no more separating the fire from the pan it had been sitting in. The room had rearranged itself around the situation, and the situation had made itself entirely at home.Everyone took their seats. Mother beside father, Amina on the other side, Kael settling near them as well. When I moved toward the chair that sat the furthest from the circle arrangement which they’d expected to be the case. The room noticed, but no one said anything directly. Mother's gaze shifted toward Kael the way it does when someone is looking for an explanation they do not want to ask for out loud, particularly given that we had arrived in the same car and were now
