AVA "Mr. Kael. Miss Ava," the garud standing by the door greeted as we entered inside. This was the first time the elders had called for a private meeting under anything close to good terms. Every prior summons had come wrapped in tension, in scrutiny, in the kind of formality that made it clear we were being measured rather than welcomed. This time felt different. Unified, almost, though I had learned by now not to mistake unity in a room like this for anything close to comfort. "Elders," we greeted in return. "First, we want to commend you," one of them said, "for your efforts in curbing the illegal protests and the illicit actions carried out over these past several days. Days that, left unchecked, could easily have spiraled into a crisis this pack has not seen the likes of in generations." "Thank you," Father said. Others spoke up in agreement. "We also thank you for your judgment in discerning the right path through such complicated circumstances, and we hope that co

AVAI didn’t give him an answer right there and then, but over the next three days I had shed more light on the situation at hand proving I was still well enough and capable. Even then, Kael's plan was meticulous. He had introduced a method of counterattacking from the inside out, narrowing the channels available to the converging families rather than meeting them head on, shrinking the range of what they could actually reach before they had the numbers to use it.It still required absolute alignment between every moving part, no misalignment, no deviation, because the moment one piece slipped it would not just slow the plan, it would undo the very foundations it had been designed to protect.I remembered the weight behind his words when he had explained it.I was still turning it over when mother's voice pulled me out of it."Ava," she said. "You are zoning out.""It is nothing, mother," I said. "I was just thinking."We were already in the car, moving away from the estate, the road

AVA"It is not particularly a surprise though," Lucas said.He was not saying it because he genuinely meant it. He was playing the gracious card deliberately, positioning the whole thing so that whatever happened next would look like our fault for showing up rather than his for trying to go around us."It is exactly the first time," I said. "And you know why.""Do I?" Lucas asked, the question carrying just enough innocence to be insulting."Why are you on the verge of requesting a private audience with the elders to propose a couple relational claim?" Kael said. The way Lucas's composure shifted told me everything. He had not expected Kael to know the specific nature of the meeting before they had even entered the building, and that small fracture, the brief recalibration behind his eyes, gave me a quiet confidence that we had made the right call in coming here."Mr. Kael," Lucas said, recovering smoothly, "even if your suspicions happen to be correct, by law this is a matter to be s

AVA"We have two options," Kael said. The silence that followed was the kind that expected something from me, so I stepped into it."A bold front would be the stronger move," I said. "But the question is whether we let the news absorb it first before we make any physical appearance, or whether the appearance itself is supposed to be the announcement.""The news would be counterproductive," he said. "You saw what happened with the rumors before, the ones at the assembly, the ones that circulated before that. When there is no clear direction attached to it, media coverage does not clarify anything. It only feeds what is already burning.""So how do we present it then?" I asked."It depends entirely on what the situation demands in the moment," he said. "The approach cannot be fixed in advance because the environment we are working in does not stay fixed. But the principle is consistent."He leaned forward slightly."What we are trying to do is not just counter what Lucas and Vera have b

AVAI had left without the papers.I also did not request a compiled report either, because by now they would already have the full picture of what had been circulating since morning. The elders' quarters carried a different atmosphere than the council chambers.Quieter and more settled. The kind of stillness that comes not from peace but from absence, as though the space had been designed for gathering and the people who were supposed to fill it had been staying away long enough that the emptiness had started to feel like a permanent feature rather than a temporary one.The dissatisfaction surrounding the elders over these past weeks had been enough to keep the usual flow of people from coming through. Whatever authority this place was supposed to radiate had been dimming under the weight of everything that had remained unresolved. As I neared the entrance a passing thought moved through me.I wondered if Kael would have come here too, if he had made the same calculation. He had told
