Then he took hold of my hand. He didn't interlace his fingers with mine. He turned my open palm over, back of my hand facing down, and pressed it flat against the old wound on his left chest. Through the gray tunic, I felt an unnatural depression. Ribs, shattered long ago, never healed properly. With every heartbeat, a subtle tremor rippled through that sunken hollow. The sensation climbed up my palm, past my wrist, through my forearm, all the way to my elbow. His heartbeat was impossibly slow. Each beat was heavy. A drum beaten for far too long, now hovering on the very brink of silence. The drumhead was torn. The drummer kept striking. He knew not what else to do. "When your grandmother died, my heart died with her."
