I stood up. Walked to the iron cage door and pushed it wide. The hinges shrieked. Bare feet pressing into the cold basalt, I stepped out of the cage and walked into the dead center of the great white pillar of skylight. I raised my right hand, palm up, fingers spread wide. The golden mark seared into my palm by the Sacred Stone ignited within the light. It wasn't reflecting the sun. It was raw gold light surging from deep beneath my skin. The same as when the Sacred Stone had claimed me in the arena, but brighter now, steadier, heavier. Golden vines crawled up along my lifeline, over my wrist, up my forearm, past my elbow, across my shoulder. They burrowed into the gland at the nape of my neck. My post-neck gland detonated inside the pillar of light. Pure luminescence
