Elias Vale Pov The next case out of that warehouse would tell us whether they still had the tools to try.I kept Rowan in the suite and the command wing the way Kael had ordered. The gardner could wait. The bond was open again, but it still felt brighter and less settled than before the abduction. Halvorsen had warned us that while it healed, it will leave a stronger trace for anyone who knew how to look—and only from close range. Close range was something we could guard.Kael spent the morning with Riven on the warehouse watch. Reports came in by short runner and sealed note. Ordinary traffic through the bay. Glass crates. Sealed medical boxes on the usual routes. No second pair of strangers until late afternoon.Rowan was stronger, he took full feeds and tracked voices across the room. When Kael came back through the door, the bond carried the exact moment Rowan noticed him—warmth, attention, a small physical lean in the sling. The old mute was gone. What remained was healing, not

Elias Vale PovIn the mills, a woman with a bookkeeper’s mark on her wrist had looked at a payment drop and walked away—which meant she still had a reason to stay close to our border.I kept Rowan in the closed wing through the morning. The bond was open and a little quieter than the day before, but Halvorsen’s warning still held. While the link finished healing, it could be noticed from close range by anyone who knew what to listen for. We did not give them the range.Kael worked the ledgers we had taken from the broker. The small ink mark on the woman’s wrist matched a bookkeeping sign used on three payment lines in those books. Two of the lines were already dead ends. The third pointed to a thin route of coin that moved through the mills and then toward the farms along our southwest edge. Not a name. A direction.Riven took a closed pair out along that direction before midday. No strike order. Watch and report.Inside the estate the new routes stayed in force. Different doors. Dif

Elias Vale PovOn the farm tracks beyond our southwest edge, the postern runner and the woman with the ink mark had met once and split—which meant the next message they tried to pass was the one we needed to be holding when it moved.I stayed in the closed wing with Rowan while Kael ran the two lines. The bond carried his focus in hard, short waves whenever the teams reported. The healing edge of the link was quieter now. Halvorsen had said one or two more days. Until then we kept strangers out of short range and kept the child behind named doors.Rowan slept, woke, fed, and watched my face as if the days of silence had never happened. The mute was gone. What remained was ordinary recovery—thinness, a residual tiredness, a bond that held when I reached for it.Seraphina held the gate and the letters. Visits stayed delayed. Suppressant questions stayed refused. The pack worked the estate in the recovery pattern and did not push at the closed inner routes. They had seen enough of loss

Elias Vale PovHow many more ordinary carts and ordinary papers were already paid for and not yet used. That question sat over the estate from the moment the medical-yard reader was sealed. The cart had been real. The goods had been real. The papers had been clean. Only one crate had carried the finder. If the woman had not given us the mark in time, the reader would have sat on the inner side of our own wall, inside the range Halvorsen had warned us about.Kael did not open the gates wider to hunt ghosts. He closed the ordinary paths until we knew which ones had been bought.By mid-morning every supply entry, medical restock, and day-hire paper on the week’s list was under Seraphina’s desk. Real orders still moved. They moved under new hands and new checks. No crate entered the inner yards without two named people opening it. No temporary worker walked past the outer posts without a face match against a list that changed twice a day.The pack felt the tighter gate. They were told it

Elias Vale PovIn a room above a dry-goods shop in a river town, a woman who had not yet shown our flagged pass was waiting for a back stair to stay unlatched—three days before the audit paper became valid at our gate.I kept the morning ordinary on purpose. Rowan in the corridor. Short garden time under Kael’s eye. The bond steady and quiet. Halvorsen had cleared us past the loud window, and the house used that clearance without opening the inner wing to unknown faces. The flagged pass and the rented room were Kael’s board. Mine was keeping our son in a life that no longer looked like a sealed trap.Seraphina held the gate lists. The delayed welfare visit stayed delayed. The grain and glass entries stayed under our hands. No new ordinary cart tried the medical yard. The tight checks were working, or the network had already shifted to the paper path we were watching.Riven’s reports from the river town came in short sealed notes. The woman had taken the room. She had kept the back st
