Chapter 161

Kael Voss PovSomewhere beyond the walls, the people who had written the ending were about to learn that the live packet had been taken.Halvorsen worked without wasted motion. Warmth first. Then a careful counter to the sedative. Fluids in small amounts. A check of lungs and gut and the thinness at Rowan’s ribs. Elias stayed at the side of the table and did not take his hands off our son except when the doctor needed space. I held the door and the room and the line of orders that kept the rest of the estate from walking in on a resurrection.“Bond is still flat,” Halvorsen said after the first pass. “Not severed in the way death severs it. Suppressed. I have seen residual serum work do this when it was pushed too long. It will lift, or it will not. I cannot force it.”Elias nodded once. He had already reached for the bond and found the same empty place. The difference was the weight of the child under his palms.I sent Riven to lock the west postern route and to hold the five prison

Chapter 162

Elias Vale PovSomewhere in the outer dark, the authors of the death story were running out of versions that still worked.Rowan woke in pieces through the night. Not fully. Enough to drink, to frown at the lamp, to close a weak hand around my finger and then let go. Each time the suppressant held the bond flat, and each time the faint pull Kael and I had felt returned for a breath and vanished. Halvorsen said that pattern was better than silence. He did not say it was safe.Kael handled the estate. I stayed with Rowan. The suite that had been emptied for mourning took him back without ceremony: the cot, the warmer, the low voices. Outside the door the pack moved through a day that had no script. The rites were suspended. The banners stayed down. People found work and did it because standing still made the whiplash worse.Seraphina brought the first outer reactions after dawn. Two allied packs sent hard questions. One neutral office withdrew its condolence letter and replaced it with

Chapter 163

Kael Voss PovThe three-day hold on the records was a short wall, and the names behind the suppressant were already being hunted.Morning put the estate in a working rhythm that was neither mourning nor celebration. People needed tasks. Seraphina gave them: repair rotations, supply checks, doubled watches on the southwest and south lines. The banners stayed down one more day. No one argued. The pack had held a death and then been shown a living child; they did not need flags to tell them what was true inside the walls.Rowan was stronger by small measures. He took milk without choking. He tracked sound. When Elias carried him the length of the suite and back, his eyes stayed open the whole way. The bond remained mostly muted, but the flickers came closer together, like a signal trying to find its path through weather.Halvorsen’s note on the chart was brief: *Support, do not force. Marker still present. Second-stage compounds not detected.*That last line was the one I read twice. We

Chapter 164

Elias Vale PovThe handler and the woman who had muted our son were moving together on our side of the neutral line. Not fleeing into deep territory. Traveling as if they still had work to finish close to the house that had just taken the live packet back.I read Riven’s line again while Rowan slept against my chest. The bond gave a faint, even pressure under the suppressant, like a bruise being pressed. Not open. Present.Kael was already in the command room when I came down with the baby. He had the west-road map open and the low farms marked in a shallow arc outside our border. The gate-ledger face and the healer’s mark were moving through ground that belonged to no strong pack, only tenants and seasonal workers who answered to money.“They are not running for a far border,” Kael said. “They are staying in reach. That means either a second asset we have not found, or a final order that still applies after recovery.”“The second stage,” I said.He nodded once. “Or something tha

Chapter 165

Kael Voss PovThe woman who had been paid to make that erasure permanent was in the water with her tools, still trying to reach the end of her order.I left the handler under three guards and a gag and went down the mill road at a run. The water cut under the mill was a stone throat that took the river’s overflow in the wet season and ran dark the rest of the year. Our two had the upper mouths blocked. She had gone in with the case and had not come out.Riven met me at the lower grate with wet boots and a short map drawn in chalk on the stone. “Two side spurs. One dead-ends. One comes up in the old drying shed. We have the shed. If she is still in the cut, she is between us and the grate.”“Light,” I said. “No fire. If that case breaks in the water, I want to know what we are standing in.”We went in from both ends. The cut was low enough that I had to bend. Water to the knees. The air stank of mud and old grain. Sound traveled in flat echoes. I heard her before I saw her: the scrape

Chapter 166

Elias Vale PovRecovery was only another kind of loss if we let the people who built the suppressant finish their work.Rowan slept between us through the first deep stretch of night, and the bond moved under the fading marker in uneven waves. Sometimes I felt the weight of his sleep as clearly as the blanket. Sometimes the mute closed again and left only the ordinary sounds of the room. Kael’s breathing stayed steady at my back. Neither of us chased the link. Halvorsen had been clear: let it surface.By morning the marker was lower. Rowan woke hungry and loud about it. The complaint came through the bond a half-second before the sound, clean enough that Kael laughed once under his breath and then went still, as if the sound of his own laugh had surprised him.We fed him. Walked him. Let him look at the light from the east window without taking him into the open garden yet. The estate outside the suite had settled into a working quiet. Banners still down. Watches doubled. People move

Chapter 167

Kael Voss PovThe broker in the mills still moved money as if the death story had not already failed. We left before second watch with a closed team of eight. No banners. No open road column. Riven took the upstream path along the water. I took the mill-road approach with the rest. The goal was simple: take the broker alive, take his ledgers, and cut the last open purse that had funded bloodline closures before he could sell the suppressant marker to someone we did not yet see.Elias stayed in the suite with Rowan. The bond carried a thin, steady awareness of them as we moved—the child’s sleep, Elias’s focus, the residual drag of the marker as it continued to break apart. It was not the full triad. It was enough to know they were safe behind our walls while we worked. The neutral mills sat in a low cluster of stone and timber where three water channels met. Night labor kept the outer yards active. That activity was useful cover. Our contact inside the coalition had marked the broker’

Chapter 168

Elias Vale Pov The work of erasing the remaining names had not finished when we took the broker out of his counting room.I sat with the copy of the sealed strip after Kael went back to the command room. Our marker was not alone on the list. Three other bloodline notations sat above and below it, each written in the same careful hand. Two had dates beside them. One did not. The note about the map holding while first-stage residual remained present made every name on that list feel like an open door someone else could still walk through.Rowan slept against my chest. The bond carried his sleep in a low, continuous band. The residual marker still blurred the edges, but the mute no longer dropped the link into nothing. When he shifted, I felt it. When the suppressant tried to close, it failed sooner than the day before.Halvorsen came at first light for the panel. He checked the numbers twice before he spoke.“Marker is falling cleanly. No rebound. If this continues, the residual will

Chapter 169

Kael Voss PovOne marker was about to be publicly, permanently corrected—while the undated name below it still waited for a child who had not yet been born. The formal session opened at the neutral record hall under treaty banners. We arrived as a closed unit: Elias with Rowan in the sling, Halvorsen at his shoulder, four of our own at the doors, Seraphina with the sealed statements. No side rooms. No preliminary “review.” We walked into the main chamber and took the floor that the death entry had made necessary. The clerks had prepared a table for testimony. A few allied observers sat along the wall. Two faces from the neutral council watched without expression. I did not scan for who might know how to read a residual marker. I assumed at least one person in the room could, and I kept Elias and Rowan inside the angle of my body and our guard the entire time.Halvorsen read the medical statement first. Recovery. Staged remains. First-stage suppressant. Second-stage compound intercept

Chapter 170

Elias Vale PovSomewhere in the territory marked for the undated reservation, a child not yet born was already priced for the same ending we had just struck from the record. The day after the session the estate finally raised the banners. Not for a festival. For a correction the whole house could see. Rowan was carried through the inner courtyard in the sling so the pack could look at him under open light and put the mourning days where they belonged—behind us, unfinished only in the places the suppressant still touched. The bond held the whole walk. Noise. Faces. The spike of his overload when too many people spoke at once. I turned us back toward the wing before it became too much, and Kael cleared the path without being asked. Inside the suite the link settled again, thinner than before the abduction, steadier than it had been at any point since the under-hill site.Halvorsen’s morning panel put the residual marker at the edge of useless for mapping. “One more day at this rate and
