We left the cabin at dawn. The sky was just beginning to lighten and the mountains were still shrouded in shadow. I stood at the door and looked back at the small structure that had been our home for the past weeks. It felt strange to leave it behind. This place had given us safety and peace and time together. But I knew we needed more. We needed a real life. A future. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. "Ready?"I leaned back against him. "Ready."We walked away from the cabin without looking back. The path was familiar now. I knew every twist and turn. Every rock and tree. But it felt different this time. This was not a retreat. This was a journey forward. The sun rose as we walked. The mountains turned from grey to gold. I felt the warmth on my face and smiled. It felt like a good omen. Like the world was welcoming us."Where are we going first?" I asked."To meet my contact," he said. "They are waiting for us in a town about a day's walk from here. We will g

I woke to the sound of waves and the warmth of sunlight streaming through the window. For a moment I did not know where I was. The ceiling was different. The light was different. Then I felt his arm around my waist and remembered. The house by the sea. Our new home. Our new life.I turned my head and looked at him. He was still asleep. His face was peaceful and relaxed. The tension that usually lived in his features was gone. He looked younger. Lighter. I reached out and traced the line of his jaw. He stirred and his eyes opened."Good morning," I said.He smiled. The kind of smile that made my heart flutter. "Good morning. How did you sleep?""Better than I have in weeks," I said. "I think the sound of the waves helped."He pulled me closer. "I am glad. I want you to always sleep well. I want you to always feel safe."I pressed a kiss to his chest. "I do feel safe. Safer than I have ever felt."We lay there for a while. Just holding each other. The morning light grew brighter and the

The morning after the storm was quiet and still. The sky was a pale blue and the ocean was calm. I stood on the porch and watched the waves roll in gently. The world felt new. Washed clean by the rain and wind. I took a deep breath and let the salt air fill my lungs. He came out and stood beside me. His arm slipped around my waist. "It is beautiful today.""It is," I agreed. "I could get used to this.""We have all the time in the world to get used to it," he said.We spent the morning cleaning up the debris from the storm. Branches and seaweed and shells scattered along the shore. It felt good to be outside. To feel the sun on my skin and the sand beneath my feet. We worked together in comfortable silence."Someone is coming," he said suddenly.I looked up. "What?"He was staring down the beach. His body had gone tense. I followed his gaze and saw a figure walking toward us. A man. Tall and broad. My heart started to race."Who is it?" I asked. He did not answer. He just watched the

I woke with a new sense of purpose. The sun was bright and the sky was clear. I looked over at him and found him already watching me with that familiar soft look in his eyes. I smiled and reached out to touch his face."Good morning," I said."Good morning," he replied. "You look like you have something on your mind."I sat up and stretched. "I was thinking about all the things I want to do today. It is like I woke up and suddenly the world felt full of possibilities."He sat up beside me. "Tell me about them. All the things you want to do."I thought for a moment. "I want to plant a garden. A small one. Just some flowers and maybe some vegetables. I want to make this place feel even more like home."He smiled. "That is a wonderful idea. I will help you."We got dressed and ate a quick breakfast. Then we walked into town to find supplies. The small village was bustling with morning activity. People were opening their shops and setting out their wares. The air smelled like fresh bread

We left at dawn. The sky was just beginning to lighten and the world was quiet. I stood on the porch and looked back at the house one last time. The garden was in full bloom. The sunflowers were tall and bright. The tomatoes were ripening on the vine. It was hard to leave it behind. He came up beside me and took my hand. "We can always come back.""I know," I said. "But it feels like we are closing a chapter. Leaving this part of our lives behind."He squeezed my hand. "We are starting a new chapter. A better one. And we are starting it together."I nodded and turned away from the house. We walked down to the road where a small car was waiting. He had arranged for it the day before. Another step in our new life. Our free life."Where exactly are we going?" I asked as we got into the car."South," he said. "Along the coast. I want to show you all the beautiful places I have found over the years. And then we will end up at that village I told you about."I smiled. "A road trip. I have n
