Chapter 31: The Reckoning

ASHFORDI left Irene's quarters with her gratitude still settling strange and warm in my chest, and by the time I reached the war room at the far end of the main hall, I had folded that warmth away somewhere private, because the men and women waiting for me there needed the Alpha, not whatever softer thing Irene's voice did to me when she said thank you like she meant it.Simon was already there when I arrived, along with Elias, who commanded the eastern patrol, and Greta, who oversaw the pack's supply lines and therefore every courier who moved goods and people across our borders. Rowan sat near the window, arms folded, his weathered face set in the particular grim stillness he wore only when he understood a conversation was about to matter more than most.I closed the door behind me and did not sit."Four dead," I said, and let the words carry the full weight I intended them to carry, because grief had its place in this room but so did clarity, and I needed everyone present to under

Chapter 32: What the Wards Remember

SIMONThe eastern ward stone sat half buried in packed earth at the base of an old oak that had probably stood on this land since before the pack claimed it, its surface carved with symbols worn the color of old bone with age. Simon crouched in front of it with his fingers spread just above the surface, not quite touching, the way his grandmother had taught him when he was young enough to still be frightened of the wards rather than responsible for reading them. The morning was cold in that particular way that came after a night of violence, the air too clean, the light too clear, everything rendered in sharp, merciless detail. Four bodies had lain not forty yards from where he knelt now. He could still see the flattened grass where they had fallen, the dark stains the frost had not yet managed to hide.He had sent his two most trusted to collect the courier an hour ago. This, the gate itself, he needed to see with his own eyes first, before anyone else's hands or theories touched it.

Chapter 33: What the Blood Remembers

IRENEDaniel did not stay long.He asked, in that same carefully pitched voice, whether I needed anything, whether the healing had left any lasting damage he should know about as a doctor, whether I had slept well. I answered each question with the same careful shortness I had used on him since the clearing, watching his face for whatever it was Margaret and Ashford both seemed to be seeing in it that I could not quite catch myself. If something calculated lived behind his gentle concern, he kept it buried deep enough that I found no crack in it, no seam where the mask might show its edges. He left after perhaps ten minutes, citing patients in the medical wing who needed him more than I did, and I let him go without protest, too exhausted to examine the unease his visit had left behind me.I slept again after that, a thinner sleep than before, shot through with dreams I could not remember upon waking except for their general shape, water and drowning and a voice calling a name that wa

CHAPTER 34: THE FRUSTRATION

IRENE"No," I admitted, frustration rising in my chest at my own failure to hold onto something that felt, suddenly, desperately important. "It's gone. I can feel the shape of it, almost, but I can't make my mouth form the actual sound. It's been eighteen years, Margaret. I didn't know, as a child, that any of this would matter someday. I didn't hold onto it the way I would have, if I'd understood what I was losing."Margaret reached over and took my hand, her grip warm and steady the way it had been that morning, grounding in a way that eased some of the rising panic in my chest."That's alright," she said quietly. "Memory works strangely, especially memory from that young an age. It doesn't disappear entirely, not usually. It goes quiet, tucked away somewhere the mind isn't actively using it, and sometimes the right question, or the right smell, or the right sound, can call it back out again when you least expect it." She squeezed my hand once. "You said she never spoke of it in fro

Chapter 35: Practiced Innocence

ASHFORDI found Lyra in the training yard behind the barracks, exactly where I expected her to be at this hour, running a group of the younger warriors through drills with the same crisp, exacting precision she brought to everything she did. She had always been good at this part of her role, sharp enough to catch a sloppy stance from thirty feet away, patient enough to correct it without humiliating whoever had made the mistake. I had trusted her with the training of half this pack's fighters for three years, and some part of me, watching her now, still wanted to trust her, which was precisely why I forced myself to stand at the edge of the yard and simply observe for a while before approaching. She noticed me within a few minutes, the way she noticed everything in her periphery, a hunter's awareness that had made her valuable to me long before any of this. She called a short break to the warriors and crossed the yard toward me, her expression arranging itself into something appropria

Chapter 36: What She Actually Did

IRENEHe stood on his own two feet, broad shouldered and solid, dressed in a plain shirt that did nothing to hide how whole he looked, how thoroughly and impossibly recovered from what should have killed him twice over before dawn. I had seen the wound. I had felt it beneath my palms, the ragged tear where a rogue's claws had opened him from collarbone to ribs, the way his blood had gone from hot to lukewarm to something with no temperature at all in the space of a few frantic minutes. I knew, with the flat certainty of someone who had trained for years to know such things, exactly how far past saving he had been. And yet here he was, blinking at me in the thin morning light, looking less like a man recovering from near death and more like one who had simply overslept."You're standing," I said, because it was easier than anything else I might have said first, an observation rather than the question underneath it. "How does it feel?""Strange." He said it slowly, testing the word, one

Chapter 37: The Report He Didn't Send

DANIELI had the message half composed three times that morning and deleted it three times before I let myself admit what I was actually doing, which was not drafting a report but finding increasingly elaborate reasons not to send one.The device sat on the desk in the small cabin they had given me at the edge of pack territory, unremarkable to look at, the kind of plain black case that could have held a phone belonging to anyone. It held considerably more than that. A direct, encrypted line to the Order, the same line I had used a dozen times before on a dozen other assignments, reporting sightings and confirmations and the slow, patient documentation that constituted most of what I actually did in this work. I had never hesitated over it before. That was the part I kept circling back to, turning over like a stone I couldn't quite stop touching. I had watched rare bloodlines reveal themselves in worse and stranger ways than what had happened in that infirmary last night, and I had al

Chapter 38: Under Alpha Authority

IRENEThe council chamber was colder than the rest of the lodge, an old stone room that had clearly been built before anyone cared much for comfort, and I understood within moments of stepping into it that the chill was not entirely a matter of architecture. Six elders sat along the long table at its center, robed in the dark, unadorned way pack elders apparently favored, and every one of their faces turned toward me with an expression I had grown skilled at reading over the past week. Not quite hostility. Something colder and more patient than that, the particular wariness of people who had decided a thing was dangerous before they had bothered to determine whether it was also true.Ashford sat at the head of the table, and even from the doorway I could see the tension held tight in his shoulders, the careful stillness of a man bracing for something he could not entirely prevent."Dr. Cross." The elder who spoke first was an older woman with steel gray hair pulled back severely from

Chapter 39: What the Old Books Knew

IRENEThe council does not ask me to answer that night. Ashford ends the session before Prisha can press further, citing the lateness of the hour and Callan's continued recovery as reasons the full accounting can wait until morning, and I understand without being told that he has bought me time I have not earned and cannot keep for long. I leave the stone chamber with my spine straight and my hands steady, and it is only once I am three corridors away, alone, that I let myself stop pretending either of those things comes naturally.I do not go back to my quarters. I tell myself it is because I will not sleep regardless, that lying in the dark rehearsing answers to questions I do not yet know how to survive will accomplish nothing useful. The truth, closer to the bone, is that I need to be doing something, anything, that feels like moving toward a door instead of standing pinned against a wall waiting for six elders to decide whether I deserve to keep existing in this pack. The restric

Chapter 40: The Night That Doesn't Add Up

SIMONThe warrior roster from the night of Irene's exile sits on my desk exactly where I left it three nights ago, and I have read it so many times now that I could recite the names in order without looking. Seven pack members logged as present at the eastern gate that night. Seven statements taken in the days afterward, all of them brief, all of them consistent with the official account, all of them, I am beginning to suspect, wrong in ways their authors do not even realize.I did not start this investigation looking for Irene's ghost. Ashford asked me to trace the security breach that killed four warriors and nearly took Callan, to find how the wards failed and whether anyone had a hand in weakening them. That is still the work. But three nights ago, going through the old gate logs looking for a pattern in who had access and when, I found something that had nothing to do with rogues or wards, something that stopped me cold enough that I sat at this desk until well past midnight rere
