Inside the apartment, the lights were off the way I had left them. Henry set the trophy on the console table by the entrance, loosened his tie and disappeared to the kitchen.I heard the sound of the fridge opening and closing. Then his voice, from the kitchen."Are you hungry?"The question surprised me enough that I walked to the kitchen doorway and stood there looking at him. He had taken his jacket off and draped it over a chair and was standing with the fridge door half open, looking inside it."No," I said."There’s no food. Should I order something?""Henry," I said again, and he looked up from the fridge. "I'm not hungry."He closed the fridge and leaned against the counter. “Okay,” and then, more quietly, almost like a murmur, “I just didn't want tonight to end like all the others.”“Order for yourself if you are hungry. I'm going to change,” I said.He nodded and didn't follow.I was still holding the envelope when we got home. I handed the envelope back to him. “Goodnight,”
