CLARA'S POV The warmth of the previous evening still lingered in the penthouse, but as the morning light crept across the living room, the real world began to push its way back in. Ares was at the dining table, quietly reviewing a set of international tax documents on his tablet. The relaxed, unburdened man from last night had stepped back into his role as the head of Volkov Global, his focus absolute. I walked over, setting a fresh cup of coffee down beside his hand. He looked up, his expression softening slightly as his fingers brushed against mine in silent thanks. I sat down in the chair opposite him, cradling my own mug. For weeks, there was a specific thought that had been circling the perimeter of my mind, a phantom threat that neither of us had been willing to voice. But after the closeness of last night, the silence felt more dangerous than the truth. "Ares?" "Hmm?" He didn't look up immediately, his eyes tracking a line of financial text. "If the contract en

ARES' POV The quiet of the executive suite after a major corporate victory usually brought a sense of absolute control. But as I watched the last of the board members leave the room, closing the glass doors behind them, my attention wasn't on the restructured domestic division or the market valuations. It was entirely on Clara. She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, her silhouette framed by the sprawling gray skyline of the city. The tension from the boardroom argument was still visible in the slight, elegant set of her shoulders, but her posture was entirely triumphant. She had stood her ground against me, used the voting rights I had placed in her hands, and completely transformed the direction of this empire. I crossed the room, my footsteps silent on the thick carpet. When I stepped up beside her, she didn't flinch. She simply turned her head, her clear eyes meeting mine, still bright with the residual energy of the fight. "Are you going to tell me I took a massive risk?"

ARES' POV The regulatory files had been transferred to my secure terminal hours ago, and I had already reviewed the material that mattered. I should have shut the system down. Instead, one anomalous file buried inside the Sterling estate archive kept pulling at my attention. But as I sat alone at my mahogany desk in the late-night quiet of the study, the terminal suddenly flagged a nested directory hidden inside a decades-old corporate filing. It was an unredacted log from the earliest development phase of Acer, one that had somehow survived every restructuring, acquisition, and liquidation that followed. My breath caught as a single, familiar string of encryption characters materialized on the screen. It was my mother’s personal master key, dormant for nearly thirty years, triggered automatically by the liquidation of the Sterling estate. I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I hit the command to expand the directory. A short, scanned memo appeared, written in E

ARES' POV The desk was cluttered with printed code strings, coffee stains, and secondary hard drives. The room no longer smelled of the sterile, polished leather of an executive office; it smelled of long hours and high stakes. Clara sat to my left, her reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose, her fingers moving across her tablet with a steady, unhurried cadence. I leaned over the main monitor, mapping out the server connections. For years, I had analyzed these problems alone. I was used to a specific workflow—highly structured, aggressive, and entirely focused on identifying a single point of failure to exploit. "The Copenhagen siphoning loop isn't an automated script," I said, pointing to a recurring variance in the capital flight data. "Look at the timestamps. They match the fiscal closing dates of the Volkov European board meetings. Whoever is doing this is manually approving the transfers from within the executive sessions." Clara didn't answer right away. S

The question she had left hanging in the air seemed to vibrate against the glass walls of the study. Clara stood by the filing cabinet, her clear eyes holding mine with an unyielding steadiness that demanded something I had spent a lifetime avoiding: complete, unmitigated honesty. I looked down at the dark laptop screen, then back up at her. The corporate predator who could negotiate a multi-billion-dollar merger without a single micro-expression of doubt felt entirely hollowed out. For ten years, my life had been a perfectly engineered sequence of targets and outcomes. I knew exactly where every variable belonged. But as I looked at her standing there in the dim ambient light, I realized the precise moment my entire system had collapsed. "The plan was flawless when I signed that check at the auction, Clara," I said, my voice dropping into a raw, rough register that sounded unfamiliar even to my own ears. I stood up from the desk, my movements slow, intentional, as I walked aro
