THE STANDOFF

Chapter 41Liam let out a slow breath, rubbing his temple with his free hand. Marcus was going to be the death of him.“Marcus,” he said for what felt like the hundredth time. “Enough.”“But, Cap, I’m telling you, the game is fucking rigged.” Marcus pointed accusingly at the scattered balls on the ground. “Ask anyone! They barely moved!”“They moved just fine after you knocked the whole thing over,” the booth owner snapped.Juliet buried her face in her hands. “I’m so, so sorry,” she apologized to the booth owner. “He really didn’t mean for this to happen.”“I didn’t!” Marcus insisted. “It was an accident.”Raphael folded his lips together, desperately trying not to laugh.Liam noticed. “If you’re laughing,” he muttered without looking at him, “you’re paying for the damages.”“I’m not laughing.” Raphael snorted. This was so messed up. Marcus didn't even look remorseful and Raphael was laughing. How would the booth owner feel? Coach would kill him when he hears.“I’m really sorry about

THE AFTERMATH OF THE CHAOS

Chapter 42The team returned to the hotel in tense silence. The usual vibrance was absent. No one dared to say anything. Even Marcus, who was usually the loudest voice in any room, walked with his head down, shoulders slumped, looking genuinely guilty for the first time in recent memory. On instinct, they all trailed behind Liam, even till his room.Liam barely had time to set his things down in the shared room before his phone rang.He glanced at the screen.Coach.Liam closed his eyes for a brief second and quietly groaned.Raphael, standing nearby, leaned over just enough to see the caller ID. He muttered under his breath, “Oh… shit.”Liam shot him a tired look. “For real.”Marcus immediately tried to explain himself. “Cap, I swear I didn’t mean for—”Liam cut him off before he could finish. His voice wasn’t angry. It was exhausted. “Marcus… for the love of God, I really don’t want to deal with what you did right now.”Marcus immediately fell silent.Liam took a deep breath before

WHO KNEW DISTANCE WOULD HURT THIS MUCH

Chapter 43Liam woke up the next morning to an empty room. The first thing he noticed was the silence. He wasn't "mistakenly" curled in Raphael's arms. There was no soft breathing from the other side. No low, teasing “Morning, pretty boy” that had somehow become part of his routine.Just silence. He lay there for a long moment, staring at the ceiling, still half-asleep. Instinctively, he turned his head toward the other bed, expecting to see Raphael appear there, but there was no Raphael. His side if the bed hadn't been touched.Raphael didn't sleep in his room. For one sleepy second, Liam didn’t understand why. Then everything from last night came rushing back. The argument. The frustration. Raphael’s hurt expression. The quiet click of the door as he left.Liam closed his eyes again.Good, he told himself. That’s what I wanted. Space. Distance. No more confusion. He repeated it in his head almost like a mantra. But despite those thoughts, the room felt strangely empty. He lay there

POLITE SILENT TREATMENT

CHAPTER 44The Frostbite Wolves spilled out of the team bus like men who had survived a week instead of a weekend.Duffel bags were tossed onto shoulders. "I'm sleeping for the next twelve hours," Marcus declared, stretching until his back cracked. "If anyone wakes me up, I'll sue."Big Mike snorted. "Sue with what money?"The group burst into laughter.Fred launched into an animated retelling of something Marcus had apparently said in his sleep during the trip, exaggerating every detail until even Lee doubled over laughing."I absolutely did not say that!" Marcus protested."You were probably high!"More laughter echoed across the parking lot as they strolled toward the apartment building.Liam smiled automatically at one of Marcus's ridiculous comments, but the expression never quite reached his eyes. His attention wandered.Again.And, annoyingly, it landed on Raphael.Raphael walked a few paces ahead beside Fred, one hand tucked casually into the pocket of his hoodie, his duffel

IDIOT

CHAPTER 45Liam frowned at himself. You're reading too much into this.He stepped inside anyway, nudging the door shut with his foot before dropping his duffel by the entrance.Home. The apartment smelled a bit stuffy, but it was home nonetheless.Raphael had already disappeared into their shared bedroom.Liam picked up his bag again and followed.Raphael walked straight to his side of the room and let his duffel fall onto the floor with a dull thud. Then, without ceremony, he collapsed backward onto his mattress."God..." he groaned, stretching his legs out. "I missed this bed."Liam couldn't help letting out a quiet laugh."Yeah." He set his own bag beside his bed. "Me too."Raphael hummed in agreement."Mm."That was it.Silence settled over the room.Liam stood awkwardly beside his bed, suddenly unsure what to do with himself.Normally, Raphael would've made some ridiculous comment by now.Something about Liam looking grumpy.Or how he'd secretly missed him during the ten-minute w

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A GUEST

CHAPTER 46By the time evening settled over the apartment, Liam had officially decided he wasn't waiting for Raphael. He was simply... relaxing. On the couch. In complete silence. For what had to be the twentieth time in the last hour, his eyes drifted to the digital clock on the wall.7:46 p.m.He frowned.Seriously? His gaze shifted to the untouched extra drink sitting on the coffee table. He looked away almost immediately. Not my problem.Raphael was a grown man. If he wanted to disappear for the rest of the evening, he could.Liam couldn't care less.He reached for the TV remote and flipped through channels without actually watching anything.Sports.News.A cooking show. Some terrible reality dating series.Nothing stayed on the screen for more than a few seconds. He sighed, turned off the TV and tossed the remote onto the couch. His foot bounced impatiently against the floor.Where the hell is he?The thought slipped into his head before he could stop it.He immediately scowled.

ISN'T SHE JUST A BALL OF SUNSHINE

The front door had barely clicked shut before the silence settled over everything again. He stood in the middle of the bedroom for a few seconds, staring at the space Raphael had occupied moments ago."...Great."With a sigh, he wandered back into the living room and dropped onto the couch. The television was still playing whatever random program he'd switched on earlier, but he couldn't have told anyone what it was about. His thoughts were somewhere else.Again.He scrubbed a hand over his face. You really had to offer your apartment, didn't you?He looked toward their shared bedroom.Smooth move, Captain. Now Raphael was going to bring his sister here.To their apartment. To their room.Liam groaned and leaned his head back."This is going to be so awkward."The words disappeared into the empty apartment.A few minutes later, another thought hit him.Food.Raphael's sister had probably been dealing with the hotel disaster for hours. She'd probably be exhausted.Hungry too.Liam rubb

SO... YOU LIKE MY BROTHER

CHAPTER 48Clang!!Liam woke to the unmistakable sound of metal crashing against metal.Bang!A cupboard slammed shut. Then came a muttered,"Oh, come on..."Liam groaned into the couch cushion, dragging the blanket over his head.Five more minutes... Please.Another loud clang echoed through the apartment."Nope."He peeled one eye open and squinted at the ceiling. For one blissfully confused second, he couldn't remember why he was sleeping on the couch. Then it all came rushing back.Raphael.Aria.The hotel mix-up.Giving up his bed.Right.He rubbed a hand over his face and slowly pushed himself upright, his injured arm still tucked securely in its sling. The apartment was bathed in soft morning light filtering through the windows. His eyes drifted toward the kitchenette.Aria stood in front of the stove, her back to him, one hand on her hip while the other waved a wooden spoon around like she was trying to negotiate with breakfast.Another cupboard door opened."...Where do you e

IS RAPHAEL JEALOUS OF HIS SISTER?

Chapter 49Liam nearly walked straight into a display of bottled water. He stopped short, blinking at Aria.“Excuse me?”She looked back at him with perfect innocence. “What?”“I said you like my brother.”“I… no.”“No?”“No.”She hummed thoughtfully. “Huh.”“Huh?”“I thought you’d deny it faster.”“I am denying it.”“That sounded more defensive than convincing.”Liam rubbed a hand over his face. “We’re teammates.”“Mhm.”“And roommates.”“Mhm.”“And friends.”“Mhm.”“Stop ‘mhm’-ing me.”“I’ll think about it.”Liam sighed. “You are exhausting.”“I’ve heard that before.” Aria reached for a packet of biscuits and dropped it into the basket. “You know… I’ve never seen Raphael talk about someone this much.”Liam paused. “He talks about me?”“Constantly.”His eyebrows rose. “I don’t believe you.”“You should.” She laughed softly. “When he first joined the team, every phone call home was hockey this, hockey that.” She began counting on her fingers. “‘Lannister yelled at me today.’ ‘Lanniste

MARCUS FUELS RAPHAEL'S JEALOUSY

CHAPTER 50The apartment buzzed with more energy than it had seen all day. Plastic grocery bags rustled across the kitchen island as cupboard doors opened and closed in quick succession. Aria unpacked everything she had insisted on buying, declaring that the men were starving themselves and surviving on nothing but protein shakes. Liam stood beside her, pulling items from the bags and handing them over one by one.“So…” Aria held up a jar of peanut butter with a flourish. “Important question.”Liam glanced over. “Okay?”She set the jar down dramatically on the counter. “How did you become captain?”Raphael looked up from where he was loading bottled water into the fridge. “Oh, that’s easy. Coach picked him because—”“I asked Liam,” Aria cut in smoothly.Raphael blinked. “…Right.”Liam shot him an amused look before scratching the back of his neck. “It wasn’t really that dramatic.”“Oh?” Aria rested her elbows on the island, leaning in. “Tell me.”“I guess…” Liam shrugged. “I’ve always
