Elowen's POV The gallery on Madison Avenue was nearly empty at mid-morning. The air smelled of varnish and old paper, cool enough that I could feel it on the back of my neck. Outside, rain moved sideways across the skylights. Inside, small pools of amber light sat on the dark floor, one under each painting, like the room had been built for quiet. I stood in front of the third one, hands in my coat pockets. I'd left before Killian got back from his calls. I just needed a room that didn't smell like cedar. One where I wasn't looking at a locked door every time I turned around. The painting in front of me was Rossetti's Proserpine. Dark, close, almost airless. A woman in deep blue, half-lit against a narrow strip of pale gold behind her. In her hand, a pomegranate, split open, the seeds catching the light like something still wet.
