Chapter 21: The Deterioration

Robert's next appointment was on a Monday.Eleanor called Ethan at noon.Cara found out at two when her phone buzzed on the café counter and she looked at the message and excused herself to the back room. The doctors have changed the assessment. It is sooner than they thought. Weeks rather than months. Eleanor is with him. I am on my way to Richmond. She read it twice. Then typed back.Go. I will be here when you need me.She put her phone away and went back to the floor. She finished her shift. He called at seven from Eleanor's house. She was at home by then. Dinner made. Her mother at the table. The ordinary evening machinery running around something that was not ordinary at all.She took the call in the hallway."How is he?" she said."Sleeping," Ethan said. "He slept most of the afternoon. Eleanor says he has been sleeping more since last week but today was different." A pause. "The quality of it is different."Cara leaned against the hallway wall."And Eleanor?""Steady," he said.

Chapter 22: Soon

She went back on Friday as she had promised. The house was quieter than Tuesday.Eleanor met her at the door with the particular expression of someone who had moved past the stage of managing their face and had arrived somewhere more honest. Not distress. Something closer to the concentrated presence of a person who understood that what remained was finite and had decided to be fully in it."He had a good morning," Eleanor said. "He asked for his crossword."Cara looked at her."Did he finish it?" she said.Something moved in Eleanor's face."Three quarters," she said. "He fell asleep on the last section." A pause. "He will be annoyed about that when he wakes up.""Tell him I said that is acceptable," Cara said. "He can finish it tomorrow."Eleanor looked at her."Yes," she said quietly. "I will tell him that."James was in the kitchen. He was washing up. Just washing up. The ordinary physical task of someone who needed their hands occupied. Sophie was at the table with tea she was not

Chapter 23: The Act Two Close

Monday came with rain. The particular London rain that did not announce itself dramatically but simply arrived and stayed. Grey and persistent and entirely indifferent to what anyone had planned.Cara was already dressed when Eleanor called at eight. She had been dressed since six thirty. Had made coffee and sat at the kitchen table and looked at the rain on the kitchen window and known somehow in the way you knew certain things before they happened that today was not an ordinary Monday. Her phone rang.Eleanor.She picked up immediately."Come now," Eleanor said. She left a note for her mother.Three words on the back of the pharmacy receipt on the kitchen table.Gone to Richmond. Her mother would know. The tube felt slower than usual. It wasn't. She checked the time twice. It was running normally. It was just that normal felt insufficient this morning. She sat with her hands in her lap and the rain on the windows of the carriage and the city going past in the dark of the underground

Chapter 24: The Story Breaks

She saw it on a Thursday morning. Not because she was looking for it.Because Priya sent it.Three messages in quick succession at seven fourteen. The last one just a link and a single word.Cara.She was in the kitchen with her coffee when it came. Still in her dressing gown. Her mother not yet up. The ordinary quiet of a Thursday morning that had no indication of what it was about to become. She clicked the link. The headline was clean and precise in the way that did the most damage.BLACKWOOD'S CONVENIENT ARRANGEMENT: BILLIONAIRE CEO'S MYSTERY FIANCÉE WAS PAID £500,000 FOR THE ROLEShe read it once. Then again. Then put her phone face down on the kitchen table and sat very still. The article was thorough. Not sensationalised. Not speculative. Thorough in the specific damaging way of something built from actual information by someone who had taken their time. The café. The business card. The contract. The bank transfer. The family dinners described as performances. The Cotswolds week

Chapter 25: The Statement

She heard him in the hallway at two.Not leaving. Moving to the kitchen. The low sound of voices. Ethan and her mother. Brief. Her mother's tone not warm exactly but not unwelcoming either. The particular register Margaret used when she was deciding something about a person. Then quiet. Then his footsteps back to her door.A knock."I am going to write the statement now," he said through the door. "Can I use your kitchen table?"She looked at the door."Yes," she said. She stayed in her room for another hour. Not because she was hiding. Because she needed the time and had decided to take it without apology. Her mother had always said that was one of her better qualities. Knowing what she needed and not performing the not-needing of it.She sat on the floor with her back against the bed and thought carefully.About the article.About the photograph at Borough Market that looked exactly like what it was.About the corporate statement that had lasted approximately four hours before Ethan

Chapter 26: The Days After

Friday arrived quietly.Cara woke at five thirty as always. Made coffee. Stood at the kitchen window. The statement had been shared forty-seven thousand times by midnight. She knew because Priya had told her and she had asked Priya not to tell her any more numbers after that. She did not look at her phone for the first hour.Just the coffee and the window and the street below doing its early morning thing.Eleanor called at eight."I have read it," Eleanor said. "The statement.""I know," Cara said."He did not consult me," Eleanor said."No.""He did not consult his legal team either from what I understand.""No," Cara said.A pause."Good," Eleanor said simply.Cara was quiet."How are you?" Eleanor said."I am managing," Cara said. Then stopped. "No. I am not managing. I am just getting through the hours.""That is enough for now," Eleanor said. "Getting through the hours is enough.""Yes," Cara said. "I think so."Eleanor was quiet for a moment."I want to say something," she said.

Chapter 27: Sunday at Eleanor's

She went to Eleanor's on Sunday as promised. The house in Richmond was quieter than it had been in November. A different quiet now. Not the held-breath quiet of the weeks before Robert died. Something more settled. The quiet of a house that had moved through something enormous and was finding its new shape on the other side.Eleanor met her at the door. The wreath was still there.Cara noticed that and said nothing about it.They sat in the kitchen first.Eleanor made tea with the practised efficiency of someone for whom tea was less a drink and more a structural element of getting through things. She set two mugs on the table and sat across from Cara and looked at her directly in the way she always did."How are you," she said. "Honestly.""Better than Thursday," Cara said. "The hours are easier now.""Good," Eleanor said. "That is how it goes. The hours first. Then the days."Cara wrapped both hands around her mug."I read everything," Eleanor said. "The original article. The stateme

Chapter 28: The In-Between

December arrived and they were careful with each other. Not distant. Not cold. Just careful in the way of two people who had been through something and were still finding out what was on the other side of it.Ethan came by on Tuesday evenings. Cara went to his apartment on Thursdays. They talked on the phone most nights. Small things mostly. The ordinary texture of two people's days being shared across a phone line.It felt real.It also felt provisional.Like something being held up to the light to see if it was what it appeared to be.Cara was aware of this and did not pretend otherwise. She went back to the café on Monday. Her manager had called on Saturday to say that things had settled enough and her shifts were there if she wanted them. She had said she wanted them. She needed the ordinary physical work of it. The tables and the orders and the arithmetic of tips. The specific grounding of a day that required her to be present and useful and nowhere else. Her first morning back a

Chapter 29: The Distance

It happened quietly. Not dramatically. Not with an argument or a confrontation or anything that could be pointed to afterward as the moment. It happened the way most important things happened between people who were paying attention. Gradually. And then all at once.It started on a Wednesday.Ethan had a board meeting that ran late. He called to say he would not make it by for dinner. She said that was fine. It was fine.Thursday she had a shift that ran over and she was tired by seven and when he called she kept it short. She was tired. That was all.Friday he had something in the evening. A dinner he had mentioned and she had said she was not up for it. He went alone. She stayed home with her mother and watched something on the television and went to bed at ten.Saturday she woke up and realised she had not seen him since Tuesday. She sat with that for a moment. Then she made coffee and looked at the street and thought about what her mother had said weeks ago.End it cleanly or own i

Chapter 30: What Breaks

It happened on a Tuesday. Not the dinner Tuesday. The week after.Cara found out from James. Not because James intended to tell her before Ethan did. She understood that afterward when she had enough distance to be fair about it. James had assumed Ethan had already told her. The assumption was reasonable. The assumption was wrong. She had run into James outside a coffee shop in Southwark. Not planned. Just the city doing what the city did. Putting people in the same place at the same time without asking anyone's permission.James was coming out as she was going in. They stopped. He looked pleased to see her in the uncomplicated way he had arrived at recently. They stood on the pavement for a moment."How are you?" he said."Good," she said. "You?""Better," he said. "The trust paperwork is moving. Ethan's lawyers have been working through it all week." He paused. "I have to say I did not expect him to move this fast once he decided."Cara looked at him."This week?" she said."Since M
