She called him on Christmas Eve.Not Christmas Day. Not after Eleanor's dinner when everything would be warm and arranged around them and it would be easy to say things in the softness of it.Before.On her own terms. In her own kitchen. With her mother in the next room and the December dark outside and no occasion pressing on the moment. She called him at seven. He picked up immediately.Which she had expected. He had been picking up immediately since Thursday. Not pushing. Not filling the space. Just available. Entirely available. Every time. She had noticed that. She had been noticing it all week."Cara," he said."I want to talk," she said. "Not tomorrow. Tonight."A pause."Alright," he said."Can you come here?" she said."I will be there in forty minutes," he said. She told her mother.Margaret looked up from her crossword."Good," she said. Then went back to it.Which was exactly right. He arrived at seven forty. She buzzed him in.He came up the stairs and she opened the door

He told her on a Saturday in January. Not a significant Saturday. Not one that had been marked or arranged or given any particular weight. Just a Saturday with pale winter light and the particular quiet of a city that had put Christmas away and had not yet decided what came next.Cara was in the garden. The Bethnal Green garden was small. More yard than garden technically. But she had been doing things with it since October in the slow considered way she did things that mattered. Clearing. Assessing. Understanding what was there before deciding what to add.She was crouched by the far wall looking at the soil when she heard him on the stairs. He appeared in the doorway with two coffees.Looked at her in the garden in her coat with her hands in the soil.Said nothing for a moment."Come out," she said without looking up. "The ground is interesting."He came out.Handed her a coffee.Looked at the soil she was looking at."What are you seeing?" he said."Good drainage," she said. "Bette

February moved into March. The UCL confirmation letter arrived by post on a Tuesday. Cara put it on the kitchen table and her mother looked at it and then put it on the shelf above the crossword books where it could be seen from both chairs.Neither of them said anything about it.It just lived there.Which was exactly right.Things with Ethan were good. That was the honest assessment. Not complicated good or provisional good. Just good in the steady way of something that had been tested and had held.He came by on Tuesdays. She went to his apartment on Thursdays. They talked most evenings. The trust paperwork was progressing. James was involved in the scholarship criteria in the way James did things now, thoroughly and with genuine investment.Eleanor and Margaret had lunch in January as planned. Cara found out afterward from both of them separately, each giving a slightly different account that was entirely consistent with the other, which told her it had been a genuine conversation

March became April without making much of it.The rose in the Bethnal Green garden came back.Cara noticed it on a Tuesday morning. The first suggestion of green on the dark stems in the corner by the wall. She stood at the kitchen window with her coffee and looked at it for a long time. Then she went and got her coat.Ethan arrived at ten.She was still in the garden when he came through. He stood in the doorway and looked at her crouching by the rose stems."It came back," she said without turning around."Yes," he said."April," she said."You said spring," he said. "This is spring."She looked at the rose.At the green coming back on the dark stems. At the specific stubbornness of something returning after winter. She stood up.Turned to look at him.He was watching her with the full surface expression.Patient. Certain. Entirely present."I said ask me again in spring," she said."Yes," he said."When I knew what to put in the garden," she said."Yes," he said. She looked at the

The doorbell rang on a Thursday evening in October. Not a significant Thursday. Not one that had been marked or prepared for or given any particular weight in advance.Just a Thursday. The kind London produced in October with cold air and early dark and the particular quality of a season that had made its decision and was getting on with it.Cara was in the garden. The secateurs in her hand. Her coat on. The October cold on her face. She had been cutting back the rose for winter. Not because it needed doing urgently. Because she wanted to do it herself. Because tending something before the hard season came felt like the right thing to do on a Thursday evening in October. She heard the doorbell from outside. Then the familiar sound of her mother's chair.Margaret getting up from the table.Footsteps to the door. Then quiet.A particular quality of quiet. The kind that meant something.Cara pulled off her gloves.Set the secateurs down on the step.Came through the kitchen.Stood in the
