VEDAThe brass knob shook again, the deadbolt rattling against the doorframe, and every nerve in my body fired at once.Zane stayed completely still, his forehead resting against the back of my neck. His hot breath washed over my bare shoulder, and I could feel the heavy beat of his pulse against my inner walls. He held on, his grip not loosening even as the knock came again. Then his large hands caught my waist, lifting me off his lap in one smooth motion. The slide of his cock leaving my body was slow, slick, and heavy, pulling a sharp, silent gasp from my throat as my bare feet hit the rug.Zane was already on his feet. He shoved his hips into his dark pants, dragged the zipper up, and grabbed his heavy boots by the laces in one hand. He didn't say a word. He stepped into my space, his free hand circling the back of my neck, fingers biting into my skin as he dragged my mouth up to his.The kiss was hard and rough, and I could still taste myself on him.He broke away, his thumb swip

VEDAThe iron gates of the estate swung shut behind the Mustang with a dull, heavy clang.Zane didn't wait for the road to clear. He pressed hard on the gas, and the engine roared as the car sped down the two-lane highway toward Greenwich. The heavy vibration traveled through the floor and up the backs of my thighs.I sat pressed against the passenger door, my fingers digging into cloth over my knees. The collar of my dress felt like a wire around my throat, but I couldn't loosen it. Not when my collarbones were still covered in dark purple bruises from his mouth.I glanced at him.Zane drove with his left hand locked at the top of the steering wheel. His knuckles were pale against the black leather. Through the thin, rough cotton of his black shirt, I could see the angry red marks where my nails had scratched his back yesterday. Each time he changed gears, his shoulder blades moved, pulling the cloth tight over the fresh wounds. My mouth went dry. I couldn't stop looking at the marks

ZANEMarcus tapped the tablet screen, the light catching the tight set of his jaw."Yesterday, at eight thirty in the night." Marcus kept his voice low, barely carrying past the open car window. "The sensor behind her wardrobe picked up a weight. And trust your father to pull up the access logs before lunch."My hands tightened on the steering wheel.Eight thirty. Shit. That was minutes before Silas had hammered on her bedroom door. I’d been in that leather armchair with her on my cock, her back against my chest, watching in the mirror as she came apart around me."Is there a video?" I asked."No. It’s an old service crawlway, so just sensors," Marcus said, glancing toward the empty gravel driveway. "Silas found your lighter by her chair yesterday, Zane. And now he’s looking at a sensor trip behind her wall right when you claimed you were ‘checking the wing's perimeter locks.’ You really think he hasn’t figured it out?""He doesn't have my face on that screen," I said."He doesn't nee

CHAPTER 37VEDAThe chilly night air hit my bare back the second I stepped out onto the gravel driveway.Three black town cars sat running in a neat line, their exhaust rising in the red glow of the taillights. Drivers in dark suits stood by with the doors open.Silas stood beside the first car, one hand resting loosely on the head of his cane, just for show, as he spoke quietly to a man holding a clipboard. He didn't look up when I reached the bottom of the steps. Without stopping his conversation, he lifted his left arm and offered me his elbow.I took it. The wool of his tuxedo was stiff and scratchy under my palm."Get in," he said, not even glancing at me.I gathered the heavy rose-gold silk of my skirt and lowered my head as I climbed into the leather seats of the car. Silas got in right after me, and the door shut with a heavy thud, blocking out the wind.Through the tinted glass, I saw the second car door open.Zane stepped off the steps. My breath caught. His jacket wasn't bu

CHAPTER 39VEDAMy heart slammed so hard it hurt.Outside the thin wooden door, the sharp click of Luna’s heels stopped dead.I covered my mouth with both hands, biting hard into my knuckles to stop the scream rising in my throat. I waited for Zane to pull his hand away, pull my skirt down, and step back into the darkness. He didn't move an inch.Instead, Zane's hand tightened around my hip, his thumb pressing directly into my swollen clit through my drenched silk panties.A small, choked sound escaped through my hands. He’s insane. He’s completely out of his fucking mind."Zane?" Luna's voice came again from just outside the door. The brass knob rattled against the locked bolt. "Are you in there? Silas is about to take the stage."Zane didn't flinch. In the dark, a thin strip of light from the vents fell across his face. His eyes looked almost black, with none of their usual brown showing. He leaned closer until his mouth was just above mine. His warm breath, mixed with the faint sce
