Chapter 22: Solo Boss FightThe big black monster smashed into the concrete path with a loud crash that shook the whole wall beneath my feet. The concrete broke under its weight sending small gray rocks bouncing over the edge. Up Close, the monster was really scary. It was over nine feet tall with muscles that looked like wet leather in the dim morning light. It smelled like metal and rotting wood. It did not have hands; its long arms ended in thick curved bones that looked sharp enough to cut through a car engine. Its chest moved as it breathed, blowing a bad smell right into my face.My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my mind stayed completely quiet. The new green system lines flashed across my eyes, marking the beast's chest, neck, and shoulders with glowing targets. My body didn't freeze. The advanced combat sense flowed through my veins, turning my fear into a sharp, icy focus."LUS scan this thing now " I yelled, my voice loud as I held my hunting knife

Chapter 24: Justin's Counter-OfferJustin stood on top of the concrete wall looking down at me. The cold morning wind blew his dark coat around his legs but he didn't even shiver. He looked really clean. His hair was perfectly neat. His face was smooth. It made me feel a spike of anger.I was covered in thick, smelly monster blood and cold wet mud. My chest was burning with every breath I took. My lungs felt like they were full of sand and my arms were shaking so hard I could barely hold my plasma blade steady. My knuckles were white as I squeezed the cold metal handle. I didn't turn the blue light back on but my thumb rested heavy on the ignition button. One press and the hot beam would come out."I asked you a question, Justin, " I said. My voice sounded rough and dry. I spat a mouthful of saliva onto the wet ground. "What are you doing here?"Justin didn't answer right away. He just stood there looking down at me like I was a toy. Then a small slow smile curved his lips. It was a

Chapter 26: Preparing for the StormThe heavy paper felt freezing cold in my hands. My fingers squeezed the edges so hard the map crumpled into a messy ball. I stared down at the bright red lines, but my eyes couldn't focus. The big red arrows looked like giant, sharp claws ripping right through the streets on the paper. And every single one of them was pointing directly at me."LUS," I whispered. My voice cracked. I had to stop and clear my throat twice just to get the words out. "Is this some kind of joke? Tell me he is playing a trick on me. Tell me Justin is lying."A soft, clear chime rang inside my head. The blue screen in front of my face blinked once, and then the text turned a bright, warning red.[Answering Host Eva: The military satellite data matches the map exactly. Chapter 28: Catching the TraitorThe basement stairs were really dark and the air smelled like old rust and spilled fuel. Every time something huge hit the shield upstairs the concrete walls creaked. The red emergency lights flickered on and off casting shadows down the narrow hallway. My boots made a slapping sound against the floor. I held my iron wrench tight in my hand and my knuckles were hurting. My leg hurts with every step. It was a hot reminder of the fight this morning but I made myself walk anyway."LUS keep your eyes on that camera " I whispered, my voice sounded tight. "Is the shadow near the main breaker?"The blue screen blinked right in front of my face.[Answering Host Eva: The target remains in the primary generator vault. Chapter 30: Consolidating Power The giant monster stepped through the broken metal gate. Its huge gray feet left black mud all over the concrete floor. The air inside the loading bay turned freezing cold smelling like blood and wet dirt. I crawled backward on the floor, my hands scraping against the ground, my eyes locked onto the creature's pale empty face. My breath came in sharp gasps that burned my throat. I could not move my leg at all. The pain felt like an iron rod was pinning me down. "Eva get up, " someone yelled. A heavy pair of boots came sprinting across the concrete, the sound echoing loudly against the ceiling. A strong hand grabbed the back of my jacket. Pulled me backward just as the giant brought its massive pale fist down. CRASH The concrete floor where I had been lying a second ago broke into a hundred flying pieces. Dust and sharp little rocks bit into my cheeks. I blinked hard through the cloud, my chest heaving and looked up at the man holding me. It was
