Chapter 31: Outgrowing the Warehouse The morning sun came through the broken roof of the loading bay throwing long rays of dusty light across the mess on the floor. Dead monsters and dried black mud were everywhere. I sat down on an overturned plastic crate near the glass control room keeping my leg stretched out flat in front of me. Every little movement sent a throbbing pain straight up my thigh but I forced myself to sit still while Justin wrapped a clean strip of white cloth around my cut wrist. "Hold still Eva " Justin muttered, his forehead wrinkled as he pulled the knot tight. "You're bleeding through the first layer already." "It's a scratch " I said, clenching my teeth tight as the tight cloth bit into my skin. "We survived the night. That's the thing that matters." Justin sat back on his heels. Wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his dirty sleeve. He picked up his heavy metal axe from the floor leaning on the long handle as he looked around the quiet warehouse.

Chapter 33: The Second "Partner”The heavy diesel engine of Armored Transport Alpha vibrated under my boots, sending hot tremors straight up into my bad leg. Pain throbbed in my calf, a sharp, pulsing bite that made my toes curl inside my boot, but I kept my heel planted on the floorboards. Through the steel mesh covering my windshield, I watched three men step out from the roadside bushes. They didn't try to hide. They walked right into the middle of the cracked asphalt."LUS," I whispered, my voice barely cutting through the low hum of the engine. "Who is the leader?"[Scanning hostiles... Heat signatures confirmed. Five on the barricade, three on the road. Ninth signature detected on the ridge at two o'clock. Distance: Three hundred yards.]My eyes darted toward the high rock ledge overlooking the mountain pass. Nestled between two thick pine trunks, a long, black metal barrel glinted in the cold morning light.A sharp voice suddenly crackled through a broken loudspeaker mounted on

Chapter 35: The Generous InvitationThe sharp edge of my knife stayed pressed firm against Christian’s neck, the cold steel stained with a single bead of his dark blood. He didn't pull away. He didn't even flinch. His head stayed resting against my shoulder, his heavy chest rising and falling in slow, relaxed breaths while the cold mountain wind blew messy brown hair across his eyes. Down on the cracked asphalt, Pete was still on his knees, clutching his broken nose, while the rest of the raiders stood completely still on top of the logging trucks with their guns lowered."You're bleeding," I said, my voice cold and flat near his ear. "And your men are waiting for you to die."Christian let out a soft laugh that vibrated straight through his leather jacket into my arm."Let them wait," Christian whispered, his blue eyes rolling back to catch mine. "Pete has been wanting my job for two weeks anyway. But he doesn't have the stomach for it. Look at him down there, crying over a little br

Chapter 37: Mid-Air ExecutionThe freezing mountain wind hit my face as the huge bat flapped its wings pulling me higher and higher into the dark sky.Below me the canyon floor became a crack in the dirt. My armored truck looked like a toy and Christian was just a small dot running around on the rocks.CLANG!The monster's yellow teeth hit the iron plates on my chest. The metal bent in with a noise taking the air right out of my lungs. Each flap of its wings made a pull through my back. Pain shot through my leg but the rush of adrenaline made me forget about it."LUS!" I cried, my hands grabbing the scaly skin on its jaw. "Target... Throat!"[Target Lock Confirmed: Mutated Night-Stalking Queen. Unarmored Throat Region.][Critical Point Highlighted. Distance: Point-Blank.]The monster made a painful screech that shook inside my head making my teeth hurt and my ears ring. It threw its head back, opening its mouth to tear my body in half. That was its mistake.I reached down to my hip pu

Chapter 39: Arriving at the BunkerThe heavy tires of my truck crunched over mud and cracked road as I drove deeper into the high mountain pass. The mountain pass was really beautiful but very scary. Outside the fog hung thick in the air. Giant pine trees towered over the path like ghosts, their branches heavy with ice. I was getting really cold. The heater in my cab hummed softly, blowing air over my cold hands but my skin was still covered in goosebumps.Every mile took me further away from Christian and his raiders higher up into the freezing peaks where nobody had set foot in years. I was a little scared. Beside my steering wheel the blue system screen flickered, guiding me with a red arrow.[Distance to Destination: 0.8 Miles][Location: Alpine Ridge Military Reserve. Facility 09]I squeezed the wheel tight. My heart thudded hard against my ribs, a mix of fear and excitement fluttering in my chest. This was it. The place I had fought hard to reach. The place that was supposed to
