The horn’s echo faded slowly, leaving a heavy silence hanging thick over the cavern. Dust still drifted through the air, catching the last faint glow of the specks that had once been the shadow. Trev pushed himself up from the stone floor, his knees shaking, his wrist throbbing with a dull familiar ache. He rubbed the pale scar there, no longer burning or blazing, just a mark of everything they had survived. Mang Karding scanned the tunnel entrance, spear held ready. The former Keepers stood close, their masks discarded on the ground like broken shells, faces set with grim resolve. No one moved to leave yet. The warning from the old woman lingered in every mind—the world above would not understand. Clint turned the scroll over in his hands. Its golden glow had softened to something warm and steady, like sunlight through clear water. He thought of the drop of black ink hidden far above, unseen by any of them, and a chill r

The air here tasted different— clean, cool, free of the heavy weight that had clung to the peaks. Light spilled from the great pool ahead, soft and silvery, illuminating walls lined with roots that glowed like living gold. The platform settled perfectly still, leaving them standing on smooth stone that felt warm under their boots. No rumble shook the ground. No shadows lurked in the corners. It was as if the mountain had finally exhaled. Yet peace did not erase the cost. Every breath came hard. Trev flexed his fingers, his palms crisscrossed with faint lines that matched the scar on his wrist. They no longer burned, but carried a quiet ache—a reminder that the price of freedom was shared, not erased. The Author walked slowly to the edge of the glowing pool, their white robes dusted with ash from the summit. They knelt, dipping a hand into the clear ink, and watched it ripple outward in perfect circles.

The sun climbed higher, spilling warm light over the ridge but it did little to ease the heavy silence hanging over them. Trev stared at the spot where the hidden entrance had vanished, sealed smooth as if the mountain had swallowed every trace of the tunnel below. His wrist felt strangely light, the old scar no longer burning, just a faint pale line against his skin. It felt like losing a part of himself. Clint unrolled the scroll he held, its golden glow dimmed to a soft hum. The ink patterns on the parchment shifted slowly, fading from sharp warnings to gentle flowing lines. He traced the edge with a calloused hand, his eyes red from dust and unshed tears. "Kael gave us everything," he said, quiet but firm. "We cannot waste it." The Author stood apart, gaze fixed on the valley below. Their face looked drawn, older under the morning light. The villagers kept their distance, whi

The blinding glow of the merged stone and book faded, leaving the summit wrapped in cold, sharp starlight. Trev gripped the edge of the white desk, his chest heaving. That laugh still lingered—thin, cruel, nothing like anything they’d ever faced. It curled through the air like smoke, and all around the rim of the spire, those burning red eyes multiplied by the hundreds, then thousands. Lila stepped forward, spear locked tight in her grip, muscles coiled like a whip. She swept her gaze across the dark, jaw set hard. “Anong meron dito?” she snapped. “Sino ba talaga ang naghihintay sa atin?” The First Writer sank back into their chair, the weight of ages settling heavy on their shoulders. The quiet power that surrounded them was gone, leaving only an old, tired soul. “Chaos was never destroyed,” they said, voice barely above a whisper. “I only locked it away behind the cycle. I thou
